Finn is a Tricolored Smooth Coat Border Collie. He is 4-5 years old, neutered male, up to date on vaccinations and is microchipped. Finn is very intelligent and easy to train. He’s eager to please and he is a sweetheart. We adopted him at a local shelter about 3 ½ months ago. He doesn’t like our other dog and would do best to be the only dog in the household. He gets along well with our cats and parrot. He is very focused on his people and doesn’t get distracted when walking by chickens or cats in the neighborhood. He sometimes reacts to other dogs on a leash, but not always. Finn walks well on a leash and stops before crossing the street when told to wait. He’s energetic and athletic and loves his rubber ball and Frisbee. He’s also calm and relaxed when just hanging out with us. We love Finn and think that if he and our other dog got along, he would be absolutely the best. We’re heartbroken. Finn loves to run and play. He needs a fenced backyard with some room. He would be a perfect ranch dog but would be happy anywhere if he got his exercise and love. We are located just above the California border in Ashland, OR

Meet lovely KAMMIE. KAMMIE is a medium-rough coat, red and white border collie mix, 2-3 years old. KAMMIE has medium to low drive, but her BC genes might become more pronounced with time as she’s had some adjusting to do. She is cautious around new people, especially men, but as time goes on, she warms up more quickly and becomes a love bug, giving kisses and begging for pets and attention. We’re considering KAM-MIE a bit of a “special needs” foster as her new human(s) should expect a period of her developing comfort, confidence, and familiarity with her new environment. That said, KAMMIE has shown no signs of aggression, rarely barks, and will be a loving and loyal family member for the one who is patient to give her the time she needs to adjust and trust.

Since she has been in rescue, KAMMIE has developed fairly dependable recall, sitting attentively after she returns to you. She is extremely yet cautiously affectionate and prefers to be very close by her humans when they’re around. KAMMIE is perfectly behaved on leash and loves the daily walks/runs we take around the neighborhood with her foster sisters. She tends to have the zoomies in the mornings when the dogs are kicking up their feet, making sure all the squirrels have been chased away.

KAMMIE is a polite guest and is not a nuisance at all. She is dependable to stay close to the pack when out and about. Loud noises and frenetic activity still startle and affect her, so a calmer, friendly environment would be key. She has benefitted from the stability and assurance that our dogs have provided her, so we believe a companion dog with a suitable demeanor could be helpful but not necessary. She has not been tested around cats or small children.

KAMMIE currently weighs 45 lbs. (down from 51) but could easily lose five more with continued exercise and controlled meal amounts. She loves food and could eat all day if we let her, so we believe she will be treat-motivated as well. Obedience training will be somewhat delayed until her new humans develop a trusting bond with her, whereby she will be more apt to learn and please.

KAMMIE strongly prefers to sleep in a dog bed or on the floor vs. a crate, so we’ve ac-commodated her. However, she remains fearful of car rides so providing a crate for car rides is a must. Although not an issue after a few days, she initially had anxiety when released into our backyard and paced looking for possible escape routes. She had easily scaled a four- foot fence in a previous stopover, so potential adopters must have at least a six foot, no-climb fence to keep her safe as she gets to know her new home. She hasn’t had a potty accident at all in her four-week stay, so we can presume she is totally house-trained.

KAMMIE is an endearing dog, who will blossom over time in her forever home. Love and patience will be, of course, important, but also experience in socializing and training a dog that needs to grow in confidence and a sense of safety. She has already made progress in these areas in her foster home but will need to build trust with her new family.

KAMMIE is micro-chipped, spayed, heartworm negative and on preventative, and up-to-date on vaccinations. If you have an approved Northern California Border Collie Rescue & Adoptions Adoption Application (https://norcalbcrescue.org/adoption/adoption-application/) and wish to inquire about KAMMIE, please email us at [email protected]. If you have an approved adoption application with Border Collie Rescue of Northern California let us know and we will request it be forwarded to us for consideration.

KAMMIE is being fostered in Redding, Shasta County, CA.

Maggie, your new best friend! Check out her video at https://youtu.be/5xs8BYOTsXk

Meet Maggie, the approximately 10-month-old vibrant border collie mix with a zest for life and a heart of gold. Weighing a sprightly 30 pounds, Maggie is a bundle of energy and affection, always ready for her next adventure. Maggie is an enthusiastic greeter when she meets new humans.
Maggie's favorite pastimes include gnawing on a bone, soaking up the sun during lazy afternoons of sunbathing, and socializing with her friends. When in the company of other dogs, Maggie's playful spirit shines through as she joyfully licks their faces in greeting. She thrives on canine companionship and would do well with a tolerant dog housemate who appreciates her exuberance. However, Maggie is also perfectly content as the sole furry companion in a household. She forms deep bonds with her human family and enjoys being the center of attention, showering them with affection and loyalty.

Maggie's always up for an adventure, but she's working on her leash skills and manag-ing her excitement when she sees other dogs. With proper training and guidance, she may be a candidate for activities like agility, or even scent work, thanks to her keen nose and eager demeanor.

Maggie sleeps quietly in her crate at night, showcasing her disciplined nature and re-spect for household routines. She is also fully housebroken, making her a reliable companion indoors. Despite her mischievous tendencies, Maggie's easy-going demeanor and adaptability make her a pleasure to have around the house.
In essence, Maggie is not just a playful and affectionate pup; she's a loving companion who brings sunshine and warmth wherever she goes. Whether she's chewing on her favorite bone, basking in the sun, or making friends with other dogs, Maggie's cheerful demeanor and loving nature make her a cherished member of any household.
Maggie is crate trained, which means she can be left alone without stress or anxiety. This skill highlights her adaptability and ease with transitions. Despite her mischievous tendencies, Maggie finds comfort and security in her crate, making it a safe haven where she can relax and recharge.

Maggie's moderate energy and intelligence make her a perfect candidate for training. With structured training sessions focusing on basic obedience, leash manners, and impulse control, Maggie can harness her natural abilities and become a well-behaved companion.

While Maggie is a delightful companion, it's important to note that she has a high prey drive, which is a natural inclination to chase after small animals or moving objects.

Whether she's enjoying quality time with her human family or engaging in playtime with other dogs, Maggie's playful spirit and loving personality make her a delightful addition to any home.

MAGGIE is micro-chipped, spayed, heartworm negative and on preventative, and up-to-date on vaccinations. If you have an approved Northern California Border Collie Rescue & Adoptions Adoption Application (https://norcalbcrescue.org/adoption/adoption-application/) and wish to inquire about MAGGIE, please email us at [email protected]. If you have an approved adoption application with Border Collie Rescue of Northern California let us know and we will request it be forwarded to us for consideration.

MAGGIE is fostering in Orangevale in Sacramento County, CA.

ADOPTED

"REX is a 1 yr 4 month old, 50 pound, neutered male Border Collie Mix. He is a handsome, energetic fellow—lovely brown color with yellow-gold eyes. We recently adopted him thinking he could live inside/outside with our cats. This is unfortunately not the case. Otherwise, he is friendly with dogs and people, VERY playful, high energy. He gets along with other dogs. We have a large lab mix; they are fine together. Rex has minimal training. He is good with ‘sit’, improving with ‘stay/wait’, not good on recall—but even though he runs/bounds ahead on a walk, he keeps his eye on you and checks in great for a ‘good boy’ or a treat (usually when he is ready); and he finds, follows you if you turn onto a side road or turn around to go home.

REX is young, healthy and active. With a little time and polishing he will become a wonderful pal and companion. He can go into a home with another/other dogs, but will need a cat-free environment.

Hi, I’m Walker! I am currently residing in the animal shelter of Lodi, CA since early May. I’m 2 years old, weigh about 40 lbs, neutered, and current on all my vaccines. I am not microchipped. I was running stray for over 3 weeks before I was caught. The big noises and many people that surrounded the streets were very scary to me, so I would run as fast as I could when anybody looked my way and hid very well until anyone in sight was gone. Since being at the shelter, I’ve realized, there are good people who only want to help me, and I get excited any time I see them approach my kennel. But the other dogs barking, and any visitors coming make me very nervous, especially while I walk through to the yard for some play time. I am hoping to find someone who will give me time, lots of love, and patience. I want to be a part of a family, and to show you I can really love you, but I need a home where I can first decompress, relax, and learn that I am safe.

If interested in adopting, fostering, or rescuing WALKER, please contact Sonii by email at [email protected] or call the Animal Shelter of Lodi at 209-333-6741

Meet Scooter!

Scooter is a delightful Border Collie and Husky mix who was adopted from a shelter on June 6, 2024. At 1 year and 2 months old, he’s a neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated pup with a happy-go-lucky attitude that’s sure to bring joy to any home.

About Scooter:

• Breed: Border Collie and Husky mix
• Age: 1 year and 2 months
• Health: Neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccinations
• Personality: Happy-go-lucky, observant
• Interests: Walks, car rides, squeaky toys, balls, fetch, and tug-of-war

Training and Behavior:
Scooter is highly treat and toy motivated, making him very easy to train. He already knows several commands including sit, come here, down, touch, and drop it. He walks well on a leash. While he does bark to communicate his needs, such as for attention or potty breaks, he didn’t bark or jump at people or dogs during daily walks. He may bark at people on bicycles but is generally observant.

Ideal Home:
Scooter would thrive in a home with someone who enjoys spending time with him on walks and engaging in activities. He loves to run on the grass and would appreciate a yard to play in. While he is okay around children, he tends to get excited and may jump during play, so a home with older kids would be ideal.

Why You’ll Love Scooter:
Scooter’s joyful demeanor and eagerness to learn make him a wonderful companion. His love for fetch and tug-of-war, along with his affectionate nature, ensures he’ll be a great addition to an active and loving home.

If you’re looking for a friendly, trainable, and playful pup to join your family, Scooter might just be the perfect match for you!

MADDY is curious, playful, inquisitive and happy. She likes to play, play, play, explore, and periodically catch some Z’s. Say hello to Lyra, a “purebred shrinky-dink” border collie mix. Little Lyra looks like all of the border collie girls her foster mom has raised through the years, only Lyra has obviously been shrink-wrapped. Full grown at 12-13 months, Lyra weighs in at around 13 pounds. She has a beautiful white and black rough coat with that easy-care-Teflon border collie hair; nothing sticks. An hour after getting dirty, she is brilliantly white again with no attention to her coat. That said, she loves a bath, and both loves and needs regular brushing.

Other border collie traits? Lyra love to run and is fast. She is incredibly agile—over, under, around, and through--and she can jump into any lap or open arms. She is treat and toy-motivated. She will benefit from someone who knows how to teach her to learn and to stay with what she’s learning. She’s keen and very eager, but simply hasn’t had a lot of exposure or experience with training. Lyra needs things to do that will stimulate her brain; she needs to be with her person more often than not. She is a dog that needs more than walks around the neighborhood and her person coming home at lunch time to through the ball and let her outside for 15 minutes. She’s got a lot going on and wants to share her excitement and zest and smarts with someone! She loves the flirt pole, pizzle sticks, her Holee-roller ball, and she’s learning to tug.

Lyra likes other dogs, but is intimidated by larger, rowdy dogs—rolling on her back and even sometimes crying. She gets along nicely with small dogs, but would be just as happy, if not happier being a one-and-only. She has not been exposed to cats.

Lyra sleeps quietly in her crate at night and hangs out in her crate when her foster mom is away from the house or they’re take a “puppa-venture” in the car together. She is good in her crate, but she will let you know if you take that for granted and expect her to spend a lot of time in her crate and not spend time doing engaging things with her to stimulate her mind and exercise her body, (i.e., she has a voice and knows how to use it!) After she has a good play or training session, she is a lovely little snuggle bug, settling nicely in your lap. She has not had an accident in the house in a very long time, and responds well to a regular potty schedule.

If you are interested in a dog with a lot of the things we love best about border collies, but in a deceptively small package, you have a plan for how to bring out the best in this little munchkin, and you have time to spend doing things with her, let us know you’re interested in Lyra. She is more than ready for her forever home!

LYRA is micro-chipped, spayed, heartworm negative and on preventative, and up-to-date on vaccinations.

💕 🐕 JACK ADOPTED 6/9/24 with mom Kathryn & Dad Mike - Happy Days – for more pictures please click https://norcalbcrescue.org/available-dogs/our-dogs/ 🐕 💕

Meet Jack, an adorable black and white smooth coat border collie cross. Born on March 18th, he is now ten weeks old, and is eagerly ready to find his forever home. Jack is a wonderful, well-balanced little boy with dark, inquisitive eyes. He is always listening and thinking as he looks at you.

Jack is fun, energetic, and very curious. He loves to explore the yard on his own, and mostly stays close to his human when running free. Jack is both agile and athletic. He will run and turn on a dime, then stop, bark, and look at you. Even at his young age, Jack navigates stairs like a champ.

Jack has learned very quickly to respond to his recall whistle, running back to you from anywhere in the yard. In his free play time, he is learning to retrieve a ball and to chase a soft toy. In training, he has learned “sit” and “down.” Jack is also learning to stay on his “place,” and to settle and relax. His training sessions are very short and several times a day with positive praise, reinforcement, and food treat reward. Jack is toy-motivated and loves to tug. He is a thinker and wants to please his trainer. Like most puppies, Jack needs supervision and must be redirected so not to develop bad habits. Jack must have a family who will spend time with him and train him to his true potential. This little guy is smart, agile, fast, and focused. Dog sports anyone?

Jack does very well in his inside crate. He has not had any accidents in the house or in his crate. Between potty breaks, Jack sleeps soundly and quietly in his crate. When let outside, Jack has learned very quickly to relieve himself on command with positive reinforcement. Jack has not been left to run free unsupervised in the house. Jack is content in his crate for down time and to sleep. During daylight hours, Jack has an x-pen for downtime, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and napping. Jack travels quiet and calm in a crate when riding in the car.

Jack is playful with his canine foster big brother. He will stand his ground and is not submissive, but he is respectful. Jack has been exposed to young children. He is not overly mouthy and does not jump up on children and or adults.
Jack desires an active family with a “puppy plan,” someone who will include him in ALL their activities, and who will support and train him to become the very best dog he can be. He loves to run and play. That said, Jack must have a job—more than tossing a ball or walks around the park. He has an inquisitive, active mind that needs to be stimulated. Jack is a leader not a follower and is very independent. He is also very sweet and loves to be cuddled.

JACK is current on vaccinations, as well as heartworm and flea/tick prevention. He is microchipped. As a condition of puppy adoption, he will need to be neutered when he reaches approximately 6 months (specific time to be determined by your vet). In addition to the adoption fee, puppy adoption requires a $75 neuter deposit. Upon our receiving the neuter certificate from you, the deposit is refunded.

If interested in DEXTER, please contact Toni by email at [email protected]

My mother-in-law just passed away very unexpectedly and we are desperately trying to rehome her Australian Cattle Dog.

Her dog Dexter is very sweet, great with people and cats, neutered, current on vaccinations, and about 4 years old. He is great on a leash and crate trained, very smart and eager to please, and would do best in a single dog home with someone that understands the herding dog breed. I only mention that a single dog home is preferred, because he simply has not had the opportunity yet to live with other dogs (he lived with a single woman in a retirement community). He is highly treat and toy motivated, and easy to train.

He lived in Vacaville, but is temporarily with us in El Cerrito. However we are willing to drive him anywhere in CA to find a home.

Unfortunately my mother-in-law’s death was very sudden and unexpected, so she did not have any prior arrangements in place and we are quite desperate to find a foster or forever home. It would break our hearts to have to take him to the county shelter. These types of dogs get stressed in a shelter environment and then become harder to adopt.

If interested in DEXTER, please contact Toni by email at [email protected]

❣️ 🐕 ROSIE ADOPTED 6/4/24 – going home with new dog dad and mom Randy and Teresa. She will be spoiled as the only dog (for now), go on long walks with dad and learn all her basic training. Check out the rest of our dogs on our website -- https://norcalbcrescue.org/available-dogs/our-dogs/ 🐕 ❣️

Say hello to our sweet ROSIE girl. ROSIE is a 2yr old, 36lb, female BC mix. She is the mamma dog of the Fluff and Ruff puppies (4 boys) that were recently adopted. She was a great mom to her pups, now it's her turn to find her forever family.

ROSIE'S favorite thing is her person. She loves to follow you around the house, and seek out attention. She will gladly settle at your feet while you work, or snuggle on the couch. ROSIE also loves toys, and balls, and is very playful. She gets along well with the other dogs in her foster home, big and small. ROSIE is very cat curious, and while she does not try to hurt the cat in her foster home, she will chase so she needs a cat free home.

ROSIE is a medium to high energy girl who needs plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. She would make a great sport dog, running partner or adventure buddy. She is a smart girl who learns quickly and is both treat and praise motivated. ROSIE is still learning how to walk on a leash, but she gets a little better each time. She loads up easily in the car and rides quietly.

ROSIE is fully potty trained and sleeps quietly in her crate at night. She is fine being crated for a few hours while her foster mom runs errands. She can be a little bit shy meeting new dogs for the first time, but warms up quickly once she knows everyone is friendly. Once she makes friends, she loves to wrestle and play with other dogs. Overall, she is a wonderfully sweet girl who will make a really great companion for an active family.

ROSIE is micro-chipped, spayed, heartworm negative and on preventative, and up-to-date on vaccinations

Our Story

Northern California Border Collie Rescue & Adoptions, Inc (aka NCBCRA or norcalbcresue.com) is comprised of volunteers who give of their time, energy, and resources to help place border collies into new homes where they will be well cared for and loved. Our goals are, in the first order, to save lives of border collies, and in the second order, place them into safe and nourishing environments. We strive to prevent uncontrolled breeding via a spay and neuter adoption policy and we educate prospective border collie owners on the benefits and potential difficulties of border collie ownership. Northern California Border Collie Rescue & Adoptions is a California based non-profit corporation with 501(c)(3) tax exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service. As a tax exempt non-profit, donations made to NCBCRA are tax deductible.
