These girls are watching and learning from us, and we couldn't be more proud! They see my husband and I run our businesses day in and day out. They ride along to calls with me and jump in the tractor with him.

This year they asked how they could make some money themselves. So this spring they helped my husband plant a test plot of conventional corn at his shop. They are now hand picking and selling it as squirrel/wildlife feed. 🐿️🦌 They have gone out after school to pick, shuck and sort it! I can't wait to find out what they want to spend their earnings on (my guess is ice cream at least once 🤣).

If anyone needs some corn reach out and my kiddos will deliver in the Yankton area! 🌽🌽

**Pic of our fat squirrels eating into the girls' profit 😂

‼️‼️ ANNOUNCEMENT ‼️‼️

As many of you know, we are expecting our 3rd child near the beginning of September! I am planning to take off the whole month of September for maternity leave and then will be part-time (at least 2-3 days a week) through beginning of November until our little one starts daycare.

Anyone with pets that need medications filled regularly please plan accordingly and have them filled prior to the last week in August! Any pets due for their wellness exams and vaccines in Sept. should receive an email or text from me discussing getting them scheduled in August before the baby arrives!

HHS had their first kitten dump of the season, meaning we found two kittens dumped in our garbage can this morning. Folks, I can’t stress enough how hard that is on a team of volunteers and staff. We don’t know if those cats were there for 10 minutes or an entire day. It’s makes for very, heavy hearts as we move into what we hope is a busy weekend of adoptions.

The shelter is full of cats, literally. We had to set up a temporary dog traveling kennel for these two tabby kittens. We have 10 cats in foster. We have 22 cats in shelter. To compare, about three weeks ago we had a total of 5 cats in the entire system. We started a cat intake request list yesterday for the first time in 5 months.

Remind your friends and family to give the rescue system kindness during the Spring and Summer months. When staff is overwhelmed or feels misunderstood or is drained of the empathy that makes a shelter operate smoothly, no one wins - not the animals and not the general public. You can help just by being supportive. By being kind. By working with us when we are trying to resolve the needs of a stray animal, or your own pet you are asking us to help. Our goal is to help anyone asking for assistance. Never, in my 11 years of leading HHS, have I turned away someone simply because of spite. We leave our jobs every day hoping those we encountered know we did our best. Hoping the pets we serve are comfortable.
Also, please promote adoption. Adopting a dog or cat that is fully vetted saves the new owner a large amount of money in veterinary care.

Finally, consider volunteering or fostering. We have 12 dogs in shelter today that need walked every two to three hours. And those 22 cats love snuggle sessions. Taking them home, even if only for the weekend, is a true break from the kennel they all deserve. Many current dog walkers are doubling up hours to help, the number of dogs we can provide shelter to is 100% dependent on the number of volunteers and staff that have the capacity to care for them.
We’ll continue to bring in dogs and cats as fast as we can while continuing to operate a top-notch veterinary program. Please continue to give our team, including the volunteers, some grace.

Thanks for supporting HHS!

WHO & WHY!?

Hello, I am Dr. Laura Kleinschmit

I am from Columbus, NE, but spent many summers with extended family from Crofton at Lewis & Clark Lake. I graduated with my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 2016. My husband is from the St. Helena, NE area and runs a business out of Yankton, so it was a no brainer to move back to this area after graduation. I went on to work in private practice in the area for 2 years. For the last year, I have traveled around South Dakota doing locum veterinary work. It has been a great experience and has broadened my knowledge getting to work with so many great colleagues. My husband and I have two little girls which make life crazy and exciting!

I am excited to get to help care for your wonderful pets in a setting that is comfortable to them!

How did KVS come to be?
