We’re ending this last of July with the fearless, protective, independent, noble, intelligent, loyal and calm, Great Pyrenees (Pyrenean Mountain Dog) 🎉🎉🎉

This specific breed is not known to be overly energetic, but bred to spend hours roaming the mountains with livestock. They require regular exercise and are better suited to a home with a large backyard or a farm / rural property.

Their long coats are easy to maintain, however do require a regular brushing to prevent tangles and mats from forming and help with shedding as they are very heavy shedders.

They are intelligent, however have a highly independent nature, as they were bred to live with and guard the flocks. They are difficult to train, and are likely to never be fully obedient, if they want to do something else. They do require an owner who can establish leadership at all times. Socialization from a young age is recommended for this breed, as they can be very protective and need to know when and how to use this instinct properly.

Known to be devoted and gentle with their owners who they bond very strongly with. They are patient and calm with children in their families, if they are properly socialized. They are extremely protective and wary of strangers so proper socialization with new people is important at a young age to prevent aggression issues from developing.

Well there you have it, another 🎉

Today we have the intelligent, playful, loving, exuberant and alert Volpino Italiano.

A high energy breed which requires regular walks and exercise - they love to play and can make great jogging companions. Their small size makes them suitable for apartments, however only if enough exercise is given. They can become bored and can be destructive and very vocal.

Their coat is easy to maintain and only requires brushing a couple of times a week in order to help with shedding and preventing mats.

They are very smart and like to please, which makes them easy to train. They can be stubborn so they need positive, consistent training with rewards to motivate them. Proper socialization from an early age is important for this breed. They also can be trained to participate in dog sports such as agility which gives them a great place to channel their energy.

This breed is known to be loyal family dogs and playful with older children. They do not like being left alone for longer periods of time. Due to their size, caution should be taken into consideration among young children as they can be easily injured. They can be wary of strangers, so socialization is important from a younger age.

Today marks the annual 🐶

Each year this day is used to raise awareness of puppy mills and specifically to their connections to pet stores that sell puppies, kittens, and rabbits. The holiday encourages individuals to adopt from a local shelter or rescue or doing thorough research in finding a legitimate breeder which is what PuppyViewer highly suggests.

To get involved on this special day, here are three No Pet Store Puppies Day activities:

🐾 Do thorough research before adopting / making a purchase. Ensure to always meet where the parent dogs live to ensure they do not support a puppy mill.
🐾 Educate your loved ones and close friends. Inform people about how and why certain pets in pet stores are not being cared for and even involve them in the cause.
🐾 Thanks to social media, many pets can find permanent homes. Utilize online networks to raise awareness about pet stores, puppy mills and why finding a breeder is the way to go when finding a new best friend!

Look at this young in training already… 👀🐶

Did you know that potential police pups are monitored monthly and even tested at 49 days, 4, 8 and 12 months of age?

When the dog is about 14 to 16 months old, they are returned to a kennel in order to do basic training. This lasts about 4 months and molds a handler and dog into a capable working unit.

What better day can it be other than a Friday? Well of course…a 🎉

In this spotlight, we have the kind, keen, even-tempered, affectionate, devoted and dignified Otterhound.

With this breed, they are hardworking and energetic that love the outdoors, especially swimming. They are better suited to an active family and make excellent jogging or hiking partners. They require a yard or rural property - not suited for apartments. Their hunting instincts are strong, and will likely chase smaller prey they see, so keeping them on a leash at all times is recommended unless in a properly fenced yard.

Considering their long coats, regular brushing will help prevent matting and keep them healthy. Some owners have their coats trimmed however it should be noted that their coat takes a long time to grow back if you choose to do this. Their droopy ears should be checked and cleaned regularly to prevent infection.

They are known to be very stubborn and independent, as well as slow to “grow-up”, which can be difficult to train. They are very amiable towards life, but if they do not want to do something, they will not, so training sessions need to be patient, consistent and geared towards motivating them to want to learn via rewards. They are natural hunters and would most likely excel in sports such as tracking.

Popular for otter hunting, the breed became nearly extinct when the sport became illegal, and still remains a rare breed today. They are large, friendly dogs that are puppyish for a long time and devoted to their owners. They are playful with children, however caution should be taken into consideration with younger children because they are exuberant and may accidentally knock a child down. They are known to be friendly with new people.

Did you hear that? There is a new sport out for just you and your pup 🐶

That’s right, this newly created sport is called 👃

Scent Work is specifically based on our dogs incredible sense of smell. A pup's nose is about one million times more sensitive than us hoomans, and we’ve been using dogs to locate and follow scents for several years. Hunting dogs will find quarry, search & rescue find lost victims, law enforcement and military working dogs find anything from drugs, weapons, and explosives; even some pups are used to locate certain cancers and other illnesses in humans. In other dog sports, it is known for the handler being in control but this is not the case in Scent Work because neither the dog or handler knows where the target odour is hidden. The handler needs to rely on the dog and follow the dog’s nose to success. In this sport, it is the canine who is the shining star of the show ⭐

Coming in hot with another 🎉

In today’s spotlight, we have the athletic, strong, intelligent, alert, devoted and courageous Belgian Shepherd Dog, also known as a Belgian Tervuren.

This breed is purely bred to work which requires a lot of regular exercise and they do their best when given a job. Mostly known for police dogs and search and rescue, they also excel and have been known for doing good in obedience trials and sports such as Frisbee and fly ball. They require extremely active owners and at minimum a large yard to run in - not suited for apartments.

They require regular brushing of the long coat in order to avoid mats and tangles. They do shed quite heavily once or twice a year, and will shed regularly throughout the remainder of the year.

Very intelligent and learn very quickly, they can be trained to perform a variety of specialized tasks. Starting at a young age, consistent training is important with these breeds, as they can try to become dominant and strong willed. Generally, they are sensitive in reading body language and actions of humans, and can respond to the slightest commands from their trainers - they are not recommended for inexperienced dog owners.

Extremely loyal and protective of their families naturally, they like being around the family and are affectionate towards them including children, if raised and socialized with them properly. They are often reserved and wary of strangers and require socialization as young dogs.

Not only the first Friday of July, but it is also and we are going to celebrate with another 🎉

On this beautiful July’s spotlight, we are here to discuss the devoted, reserved, active, watchful, alert, loving and intelligent Hovawart.

This breed is an active dog that requires regular exercise - when properly exercised, they are usually quite calm indoors. They can make great hiking and jogging partners and love having a yard or large property to roam on and protect. They can excel in several activities / tasks which make them hard-working dogs when given a job to do - they are not suitable for apartments.

Although their coat is long, it is fairly low-maintenance, however regular brushing to keep it healthy is needed especially to prevent mats and tangles from forming.

An independent breed, they can be a tad difficult to train and less eager to please than some other working breeds, but are very intelligent. You must keep them motivated when in training sessions, and they require positive, consistent methods in order to prevent them from becoming bored. They have a natural guarding instinct and are bred to be protectors, so they require real training to do this job. They do require proper socialization from a younger age to learn the difference between friend and foe - they have been known to excel in tracking, search and rescue and require an experienced owner.

They can be very devoted to their owners and naturally protective of them. If well-socialized / raised with small children, they can be affectionate and gentle with them. They are playful and loving with those they know and can make for great family companions and experienced owners. They are very reserved around people they do not know and require proper training and socialization in order to know when to become protective or to know who is a friend.

Our pups digest foods way differently than us hoomans do, and eating certain kinds of foods could lead dogs to long-term health problems and, in some situations, even death. As omnivores, pups really have no need for fruits and vegetables in their diet, however an occasional fruit or veggie as a treat is okay 🍉🥕

Do you give your dog fruits and veggies as a treat once in a while?

Fun fact about our pups 💡

Our dogs do sweat, however do not expect them to get damp armpits any time soon 😅

As you know, us humans sweat water liquid in order to cool down but our dogs produce a pheromone laden oily substance that we are unable to detect. Our dogs only know this because of their great sense of smell 👃

The only actual place pups sweat like us is in their paws, so that is why they pant in order to cool down 🐾

It is very important to keep your dog cool and hydrated especially on warmer days to make it much easier for them.

On those summer hot days, how do you keep your pup cooled down?

Are you ready for this next ? Because we certainly are 🎉

In this June’s spotlight, we have the active, intelligent, friendly, enthusiastic, alert and confident Flat-Coated Retriever.

This breed is especially exuberant and energetic that requires several hours of exercise and playtime on a regular basis. They love to accompany their owners on adventures and would make great hiking and jogging companions. If given the opportunity, they love to swim and hunt, but also spend time fetching balls with their families. They are better suited in a home with a yard to run around in or a rural property.

To help prevent shedding, regular brushing will help keep the coat healthy. Their long feathers can become tangled and matted if not brushed out appropriately. They have natural dirt and water repellant oils in their coat so it is important to not give too much bathing as the oils could be removed.

They are very trainable and intelligent - they love to please their owners and have a lot of energy which can be utilized for learning new things. They are natural retrievers and hunting comes very easily to them. They are known to become bored easily, so they respond best to short and varied training sessions that keep them interested. Some members of this breed have been trained as guide dogs and even drug-sniffing dogs as well.

This is a great family dog that is just happy to be home with their owners or out hunting in a field. They are very loving and affectionate, and make energetic / playful companions for children. They are known to act like puppies for several years, and are all-around happy dogs. They absolutely love to be with their families and desire to be included in activities and outings.

What is better than getting into the season of warmer weather? Another 🎉

In today’s spotlight, we have the confident, watchful, alert, loyal and calm Eurasier.

This breed only requires moderate exercise, regular playtime and a long walk each day would be just enough to satisfy this breed. If involved with a more active family, they will happily join on hikes, camping trips, etc. Even though this is a larger breed, they adapt to any living situation if given their regular exercise.

Regular brushing helps with shedding and keeping the coat healthy. They have a heavy coat and will not tolerate hot temperatures well unless they are shaved/clipped. They are heaving shedders, especially during season changes.

They are an intelligent breed and can be easily trainable/willing to please. They quickly learn basic commands and respond better with positive, consistent training methods at an earlier age. They are not likely to be high-level obedience competition dogs, but make a good family pet.

Created as a companion breed, they have been known to be extremely devoted to their owners and having the need to be with them constantly. They are best not to be left alone for long periods of time. If socialized properly and at a young age, they can be gentle with children within the family. They are naturally quite wary of strangers and although are not usually aggressive, they require socialization from an early age in order to accept new people.
