Here’s some helpful information if you are in MI and encounter a dog in a car…

It is currently ILLEGAL in Michigan to break a car window if you see a dog trapped in a hot car.

I believe the proposed bill is still waiting for a vote. (Let us know if it has passed.) Unlike in 31 other states, you are not protected from prosecution in Michigan if you break a window to rescue a pet.

What can you legally do?
* Take a picture of the license plate with your phone
* Call local authorities
* Stay with the animal...never leave the vehicle.
* Ask someone to get water (in the event first responders get the dog out and you can start cooling the dog)
* Remain calm (most important)

FROM THE DESK OF THE DIRECTOR -

GPAAS is now the community shelter for all five Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods. We have municipal agreements to provide their public safety departments with sheltering and animal services. Dr. Lawrence Herzog of Grosse Pointe Animal Clinic graciously provided these services to three of the Grosse Pointes (Park, City, & Farms) for the past 40 years, but will no longer house strays. All community lost/stray animals will now come to GPAAS.

Our Annual Appeal launches today with our goal of raising $150,000. We need your support now more than ever, not only financially to provide care and supplies for all these animals, but also to provide adoptive homes or foster care.

GPAAS has two buildings, an intake facility, where police bring in lost/stray animals, and our adoption center, where pets can be viewed for adoption. Due to our full capacity, we are gridlocked. To accommodate lost/stray animals in our intake building, we need to move animals to our adoption center. We cannot make room at our adoption center until one dog or cat leaves via adoption or foster.

Please consider adopting or fostering to help us continue to provide this very necessary service to our community.

It’s that time of year!
Check to make sure ID tags are up-to-date with your cell number and address and that your pets have their ID tags/collars on (Air Tags or Tile tags, if possible). Also, check to make sure that fences are secure. Scared pets will do the unpredictable. If your pet is home alone during fireworks, turn on soft music or leave the TV on low for some calming background noise. Wishing everyone a Safe and Happy 4th of July! 🇺🇸🎆😻🐾❤️
