Launched into THE OTHER TIDE

As a metaphor for the start of THE OTHER TIDE is one I had the pleasure of photographing myself while exploring East Coast beaches to find a supply-away from-supply. The sun rose over a hurricane 100 miles offshore from the Outer Banks in NC, a divine allusion to THE OTHER TIDE entering my life. Fresh out Baylor University with a B.A. in Media & minor in Entrepreneurship with big dreams. Enter job market of Austin, TX. I worked strange hours at a news station downtown and filmed weddings on the side. B.A. Not Enough? How about an M.B.A. ? A job and a freelancer gig wasn’t getting me anywhere so an M.B.A. Scholarship was enough for me o home to attend.

Sleep-deprivation writing a paper to get in a PhD program domino-ed out of control from a wreck that stripped me of mobility, license, and research assistant job, just outside of where I’d have graduated at semester end.The only job I was able to get was enough for me to realize I had to do something or I wouldn’t make it. My family had just collapsed over its own problems so I was on my own. Enter Best Chance Sales... I started with garage sales, and that’s what hooked me. I remember buying a game for $.50 and it selling for $50 before I even left. A flicker of hope enough to find items I could source free in my area that I found really worth growing. Too broke to outsource, I had to source from within, what I knew. Rail road spikes were what my area had tons of. Sourcing first on foot, tons and miles went into my amazon account. I grew this into a business now ran by a trusted partner and sourced from a supplier. Retail arbitrage products alongside railroad spike growth led me to discover local beaches provided seashells enough to make products. Just as business got its own place to grow, the flood happened. THE OTHER TIDE started out of my original company, Best Chance Sales. At first, I had to figure out an alternative to what I thought was my career plan.I had lost my license for falling asleep at the wheel a semester before graduating with my MBA and going on into a doctoral program. It took that wall I hit to wake me up, and Amazon took it from there. Starting at garage sales I began my Amazon journey under the company name Best Chance Sales, because it was truly my best chance at getting anywhere at the time.

Once familiarized enough with the types of products I realized the myth about outsourcing manufactured products and busted it. First rail road spikes, 20,000 of them before I lost count, were my best seller. In those days I walked the beaches to escape somewhere peaceful when work was finished and I picked up seashells for fun because I always have had a little Dori in me. The spikes taught me how and why things sell online. Particularly one listing for a golden railroad spike paper weight broke me out of my narrow minded views on business (probably gleaned from too many text books). The "golden" and "paper weight" words, along with the gold finish made a rail road spike 20 times more valuable. Since it sold, my brain hasn't stopped dissecting why to this day. Howev.er, it has come up with a simple formula from it that I call "a V.O.W. to sell anything". These are the three types of words that guide my new product listing: Value, Object, and Why.w A black pearl I found and lost months later got me walking the beaches even more, now out of a serious intrigue that had me searching. During that searching I was able to map out the source of THE OTHER TIDE. While I have many spots that are good for the shells I sell, there is only one that is especially great. It is the one that inspired the name for the brand.
