In exceptional cases, bovine pinkeye may be triggered by an unexpected factor. In this instance, an Ocular Dermoid caused the pinkeye in these calves. Ocular Dermoids are congenital defects characterized by growth of normal skin in or on the eye, often leading to irritation of the cornea due to hair growth. Surgical excision and antibiotic treatment are usually effective in resolving the issue.

When calves are born, the image on the left is sometimes what we see with the cow - a large, full udder, and hopefully, everything is good to go. However, sometimes the calf is unable to utilize the colostrum and/or later the milk due to less than adequate or poor udder/teat conformation, resulting in issues for both cow and calf. The cow may end up with mastitis that can result in severe illness. The calf can end up with a condition called Failure of Passive Transfer (FPT) setting it up for secondary bacterial infections that if left untreated may lead to death. Monitoring of these cases early and often for the first couple weeks after birth and intervention when needed will help improve the cow/calf’s chances for future success.

Cows are beginning to calve and some newborns are certain to be cold stressed. Getting those calves back to normal body temperatures as soon as possible will save some calves and increase the vigor of others.

As the calving season approaches, an increased understanding of the parturition process is helpful. The more we understand about the physiology of the process, the more likely we are to make sound decisions.
