BOYSENBERRIES

June marks the annual return of these heirloom berries, a variety seldom seen in production agriculture.

Why? In the early 70’s, they fell out of favor due to their susceptibility to disease, short bearing season and difficulty in transporting because of their fragile nature.

This is true of so many varieties of heirloom fruits. But without them in production, we run the risk of extinction . Just in these past 80 years, statistics show we have lost close to 93% of heirloom diversity.

Since day one back in 2009, heirlooms have been the foundation of Rolling Hills. Our first boysenberry vine went in around 2012 and then in 2022, we planted the parameter of the property with this delicious fruit.

Over this past weekend, we began harvesting. Nothing is as lovely as a freshly harvested berry, warmed by the sunshine that stains your hands and explodes with pure flavor when eaten! It’s like a time capsule for the senses.

We will offer these wonderful delights for you to savor each Friday and Saturday here at our urban nursery and gardens. If you haven’t already signed up to our newsletter, please do so you know what’s fresh each week this summer !

It’s been a minute since I’ve shared an update on our precious Olive pup…

She is healthy and so happy. She lives with my daughter full time since despite the photos, she and our older female husky are NOT friends ( two dominate females don’t mix).

Her resilience, spirit, intelligence and personality are such a gift to our family. It’s still a process but we are all in!

And for all of you who are part of our journey with sweet Olive, THANK YOU! We feel the love.

Easter morning…

it’s here
In this urban garden, this sliver of earth where I call home

Where I surround myself with as many fruiting trees, flowering plants as I can to close out the chaos
To invite in the quiet
The peace
The sense is wonder that can fade so quickly and it so challenging to call back

the spring garden is where renewal abounds so beautifully and effortlessly

where reawakening surrounds me
When I can literally watch a vine stretch grow and bloom right before my eyes in a matter of days not months or years

Remembering that I too am a part of this glorious earths garden
And my nature is one and the same with the nature that surrounds me

The garden and I
Reawakening, poised for growth. And growth can appear out of nowhere

In the garden, I can see the rains of winter and early spring are washing away accumulated layers of a long year
A long life

Filling the gardens above and below the surface
Preparing it for the days, weeks, months ahead
for both instantaneous and sustained growth

For everything needed to burst with jaw stopping magnificence and wonder

To fully bloom
To be abundant

As these rains continue to replenish parts of me to do the very same

it’s peaceful song quiets the internal chatter

and as I watch the goldfinch perch in the flowering apricot trees
Ruffling its wings in the gentleness of the rain
Springing from branch to branch
Then to the ground below
Being nourished with a new abundance of sustenance that has appeared seemingly overnight

all of this is felt within the core of me
Bypassing the mind
Taken in by all the senses
it is simply one of the best things in life.

May your Easter be filled to overflowing with renewal, hope and above all
Peace.

20/01/2024

CDFA is preparing to begin large-scale fruit removal In the Redlands-area of San Bernardino County. Removal will occur at more than 2,000 residences and is scheduled to begin in late January.

All host fruit for the Oriental fruit fly—citrus as well as a number of other fruits--will be removed from properties, with trees remaining in place.

Properties slated for fruit removal are north and south of I-10, with a northern boundary of E. Highland Ave, a western boundary at the intersection of Garden and Elizabeth streets, an eastern boundary of Alta Vista Dr., and a southern boundary of Silver Leaf Ct.

This approach will allow CDFA and its partners at the USDA and local agricultural commissioners’ office to break the lifecycle of the invasive fly, which lays eggs in fruit that develop into larvae (maggots), posing a threat to both residential and commercial citrus as well as a total of more than 230 crops, including nuts, vegetables and berries.

If left unchecked, the Oriental fruit fly could become permanently established and cause billions of dollars worth of losses annually, which would significantly impact California’s food supply.

Residents in the Redlands-area are strongly urged to cooperate with the agricultural officials working on the project, as fruit removal is mandatory. Removal is expected to continue until late February. Residents in areas of concern will receive a notice 48 hours prior to fruit removal, with work crews arriving after the stated time interval has passed.

Work crews may consist of a combination of the following: CDFA and USDA employees, California Conservation Corps crews, and private contractors specializing in fruit removal.

Residents in the removal area are asked not to remove fruit from trees themselves and they may not move produce from their property. If fruit falls from trees and must be disposed-of, residents are urged to double-bag it and place it in a trash bin rather than green waste bins or other organic refuse designations. This approach significantly reduces the risk of spread of Oriental fruit flies, larvae or maggots.
