Update - the SF SPCA took Soju and she will be available from them.

Soju needs a foster home!

Soju is around five years old and and 12 pounds and extremely gentle, quiet, and sweet. She presents as a bit worried and overwhelmed at the shelter, but she has the spice content of a packet of mayonnaise - she is trying SO HARD and it shows. With one-on-one-time, she warms up quickly and now she's at the front of the kennel wagging her tail when folks walk by. Fetch volunteers are loving her! She's super housetrained, a great little leash walker, and she can cuddle with the best of them. She did well meeting another small dog. Please let us know if you are interested in fostering Soju. We will pay for surgery for her cherry eye once she is in foster care. [email protected]

UPDATE: Teddy will join his new family next week! Hooray!

It is OFFICIAL. Teddy the wee 4lbs 7-month-old Long Hair Chihuahua-Mix is accepting applications! PLEASE READ BEFORE APPLYING.

Teddy is definitely a cutie pie. He is 100% puppy and he is full of puppy energy and silliness. Adopter must be ready for a puppy that is go-go-go. You'll be teaching him to sit, come, and stay. You'll be working on housetraining and leash walking. All things to be expected with a puppy!

Teddy does have a few more "issues". Teddy has been very under-socialized and so he is timid. He takes time to warm up to new people, so he won't jump happily into your arms during the meet-and-greet. But he is affectionate once he knows you. His new home must have another young dog in the home to provide playtime and companionship. Teddy has some separation anxiety, but we expect him to settle with a companion dog to keep him company. Teddy can be vocal when left alone. Teddy is too shy and too little for a home with young children.

Teddy is going to be neutered next week and ready to join his new family after 06/29/2024.

Perhaps third time will be the charm.

This bonded duo is STILL looking for a foster home. How about with you? Maybe a foster-adopt?

Johnny and Moira Rose are in quandary. Their beloved person died and there was NO ONE to take them in and keep them safe.

Johnny has a little bit of terrier scruff, is about 8 years old and 8 pounds.
Moira is 12 years old and 6.5 pounds.
These 2 are bonded and would like to stay together.

They're having a hard time in the shelter and are a bit talkative when one first arrives at their kennel. Johnny puts on his most ferocious face and nobly tries to protect his dear Moira. But! Crouch down and offer some treats and suddenly these two are your best friends for life.

They should settle quickly into foster care. They are very housetrained and may not have leash experience.

Please let us know if you would like to foster Johnny and Moira!

Grateful Dogs Rescue will provide vet care and even food. You provide the safe loving home and help this duo get ready for adoption.

You'd have the most handsome dog in the world if you adopted Wally.

Wally is about 10 years old and 60 pounds.

Wally was adopted a year ago and it was going so well, they loved him and he loved them. Wally especially loved it when the grandson came to visit. Due to a terminal medical diagnosis for the adopter, Wally is back with us in foster care and needs a new foster home or foster-to-adopt home.

Wally gets along with humans of all ages, just as ready to play as he is to settle down and cuddle. He would do great in a multi-generational house. He alerts to new people, and he might look tough, but it doesn't take much to win over this big lovebug. Wally likes to take his time on walks, enjoying all the wonderful smells and sights. On longer walks, Wally and his foster parent have a compromise where Wally gets to sniff at his leisure for the first half, then they pick up the pace for the latter half.

This pup is perfectly potty-trained! Wally even understands the command to "do your business" in the backyard, and hasn't had a single accident at his foster home. Wally is a patient pup, and has been very cooperative with all sorts of indignities like grooming and eardrops.

Wally is a very smart dog, and eager to please. Left alone, he generally does well with a frozen kong and space to roam, but he'd much prefer to be with people. Wally is not an off-leash candidate and should not be in a home with other small pets, but should do OK with a female dog about his size.

If you are interested in fostering, adopting or just meeting Wally, please complete our online adoption application at https://www.gratefuldogsrescue.org/adoption-process/ . One of our volunteers will get back to you. Adoptions are local, confined to the Northern California.

Meet Sasha!

This little gem is a medical special needs pup. Sasha is a very sweet and easy going 1-2 year old Bichon mix; she is about 11 pounds. She loves all people and dogs and enamors everyone she meets. Sasha walks well on leash, sleeps through the night in her crate, and does relatively well with her alone time. She has an adorable way of getting one's attention and loves to play with other dogs.

Unfortunately, Sasha was most likely hit by a car at some point and her spine is broken in her lower back. She has full use of all her legs, but she's completely incontinent. Her foster assists her to empty her bladder 3-4 times per day (easy to do, and a potential adopter could be taught to do it). If Sasha is assisted to empty her bladder, her diaper stays dry and her fur stays clean. Due to her condition, Sasha is prone to UTIs, but helping her to empty her bladder regularly decreases this potential. Luckily, Sasha doesn't show any signs of pain and has a full life expectancy.

Sasha will need to live with someone who is home most of the time. She'd probably do best in a home with a yard, so she doesn't always have to be in a diaper, but she would also be an easy dog for an apartment dweller as she doesn't necessarily have to be walked first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Since Sasha is "non-shedding, she will need regular grooming.

If you are interested in adopting Sasha, please complete our online adoption application at https://www.gratefuldogsrescue.org/adoption-process/ . One of our volunteers will get back to you. Adoptions are local, confined to the SF Bay Area. We will consider applicants outside the 9-county San Francisco Bay Area for Sasha, as long as applicant is able to travel to Oakland for meet and greet, and pick up.

Little Perry is made of sugar and spice and everything nice! He is 1-2 years old and about 13 pounds. Perry loves to play with other small dogs after an appropriate introduction, but is also quite good at entertaining himself. Perry is very athletic; his foster mom has seen him toss a forward pass and catch it himself before it hits the ground.

Perry is housetrained and knows how to use a dog door. He has learned to walk on leash, but is not comfortable yet meeting new dogs or people while out.Perry can walk along with a person and another dog after an introduction. He is not an off-leash dog at this time and prefers to walk where other dogs are also on leash. Perry loves to hang out in the yard even when all the other dogs are inside, so a outdoor space for him would be important. Perry enjoys being around other playful dogs so that would be nice in his forever home. Children in his home should be teenagers.

Perry is very nervous in new places and we know it will take him about 24 hours to feel comfortable in his new home. For that reason, a foster-to-adopt home for Perry is a possibility.

Freya! This unusual name is an old NORSE associated with a goddess of love. So when you meet our Freya, you are meeting a dog with a touch of mythological magic.

Freya is an adorable little terrier mix who is about 1 year old and 14 pounds. Freya loves her toys and and it is fun to watch her squirrel them away in her kennel. Freya has been good when meeting dogs on walks and has ignored cats. Freya lives with 2 dogs, one big and one small, in her foster home.

Toast is a sweet boy. He housebroken and loves to cuddle. He is 3.5 years old, 16 pounds. This smart boy is treat motivated and learning to walk on a leash. Afterall, leash walking is the best considering all of the amazing hiking opportunities in the SF Bay Area.

And did you notice those adorable copper-colored eyes. They are hypnotic.

Look at his amazing feet! The fluff is adorable and so is the rest of Toast.

He is getting along with his foster family's 2 dogs and 2 cats. YES...we have a cat friendly dog who will share the sofa with his feline siblings!

Who is this gorgeous dog?!! It isVivian.

Vivian is a 7-9 year old Chihuahua-Mix! Vivian's true personality has come out in foster care. Vivian is good with other dogs, loves going for walks and hikes, is comfortable in the car and is housebroken. Vivian is treat/food motivated. She is quick to accept a treat and then jump on your lap for a cuddle. Vivian loves walks and is part of a pack walk with dogs of all sizes! She is a peppy little girl who will be perfect BFF for you!

Vivian is about 14lbs, spayed and up to date on vaccinations. And our beautiful Vivian has a recent dental, so she has kissable breath 🙂

Johnny and Moira Rose need a foster home!

Poor pups, their person died and there was no one in the extended family to take the so they ended up in the shelter. Johnny, with the little bit of terrier scruff, is about 8 years old and 8 pounds. Moira is 12 years old and 6.5 pounds. These 2 are bonded and would like to stay together.

They're having a hard time in the shelter (it's been a lot of changes in 5 days) and are pretty barky when one first arrives at their kennel. Johnny definitely puts on his most ferocious face and nobly tries to protect his dear Moira. But! Crouch down and offer some treats and suddenly these two are your best friends for life - I suspect the fierce display is rooted in some big shelter feelings - the officer who responded to their scene and impounded them said they were quite sweet and affectionate on scene. They should settle quickly into foster care. They are very housetrained and may not have leash experience.

Please let us know if you would like to foster the Rose's! [email protected]. It is OK if you don't live in Schitt's Creek!

Update - Toast has a foster home lined up!

Toast is another scared young male in need of a foster home. He appears to be a blonde mini Schnauzer, if that is a real thing. He is a bit over 16 pounds and about 3 years old. He was surrendered due to medical issues of his person. He is frightened and shut down at the shelter, but never growly. When he got to spend time with someone in the shelter yard, he enjoyed a bit of play and lap time. His surrenderer said he lived with another dog and a teenager. Let us know if you would like to foster Toast! [email protected]

Update - Jester has a foster home lined up!

Jester needs a foster home!

It is the same old story; cute little Chihuahua mix abandoned by his owner and shy and scared in the shelter but seems to be a sweet guy once he has time to connect to a person. This honey-colored Chihuahua mix is 8.5 lbs and we guestimate he is approximately 2 years old. Animal control officers found him roaming around all alone in a park in the Pacific Heights neighborhood. He was not wearing any ID, had no microchip and no one has come looking for him. His behavior assessor found she couldn't put Jester up for adoption at ACC because he was environmentally overwhelmed and very anxious. This said, Jester did warm up throughout their time together and he became very affectionate and face licky. He's a cute little guy who isn't digging shelter life. Let us know if you might be interested in fostering Jester! [email protected]

Hi, going into summer we will need vacation fosters more than ever. If you have ever considered fostering, then this is a good way to start as the foster stay has a defined beginning and end.

First up: Peanut needs a place to stay from Thursday, June 13th to Sunday, June 23rd. Peanut is a sweet, easy-going older gentleman who should be fairly easy to watch. He is being fostered in Santa Rosa so a North Bay sitter would be ideal. Please let us know if you could watch Peanut! [email protected]

Adoption Pending
Juliette is officially ready for adoption! Juliette is a little dog with a huge presence. She is fun, spirited, silly, sweet and well-behaved. Juliette is 2-3 years old and she is itty bitty at 5.5 lbs. She enjoys the company of other dogs and warms up quickly to both men and women! She'd be so happy to find a home with SUN SPOTS indoors or out. She is a great co-pilot in the car! And she enjoys walks and dog parks.
