Thanks to Just Food For Dogs for donating food to the K9 Kismet Pack, Mocha is enjoying delicious and nutritious meals while on her healing journey. As you can tell, she loves it!
There will be a more in-depth update to come, but in the meantime, please know that the treatment plan for Mocha is well underway. Stay tuned!
đ˛Please consider making a FriYay $1 donation to help us get Mocha healthy and ready to be adopted. It may not sound like much, but dollars (much like our vet bills) have a way of stacking up! Since weâre a 100% volunteer run organization, that dollar goes directly into the care of the dogs in our care.

Ellie spent the last two weeks being spoiled while she recovered from surgery to remove her eye and the bullet that was lodged in her sinus cavity. Today, Ellie went back to see her friends VCA West Coast Specialty and Emergency Animal Hospital to have her stitches removed. Ellieâs surgeon said her wounds are healing nicely and they expect she will make a full recovery!
Thank you City of Long Beach Animal Care Services for believing in and fighting for, Ellie! When shelters and rescues work together to help the animals in our communities, anything is possible! đŤąđťâđŤ˛đ˝â¤ď¸âđŠš

Todayâs #shelterspotlight is for a dog who has been red-listed due to severe kennel stress. Our handsome friend Gallant does not care for the noisy, overcrowded shelter environment he's called home for the past 131 days. Please help us #share his story so we can find him the calm, loving accommodations he truly deserves.
Name: Gallant
ID: #A717488
Gender: Neutered male
Age: 2 years
Breed: Mountain Cur Mix
Weight: 75-80 lbs
Stray Intake: 3/22/24
*URGENT: Must be rescued/adopted by 8/1/24
City of Long Beach Animal Care Services Shelter Notes: âHe has participated in playgroups with other active non-assertive dogs and has done well. Over the course of 4 months, Gallant has been housed at the shelter he has continued to display increasing levels of kennel stress & in-kennel anxiety. Gallant displays concerning levels of in-kennel arousal behavior & reactivity towards other dogs kenneled near him or approaching his kennel, Gallant will jump/spin on kennel walls when hearing or observing activity from other neighboring dogs followed by alarm barking & lunging towards kennel. Recently lesions/wounds have been observed on Gallant legs/abdomens, likely as result of jumping/leaping on walls of kennel causing abrasions from structural hardware. Due to Gallantâs high levels of kennel stress and continued poor quality of life/deterioration at shelter, Gallant needs placement by the end of day on Thursday, August 1st 2024.â
Knowing that Gallant does great OUT of the kennel, a shelter volunteer was allowed to take him to an off-site adoption event. Unfortunately, the few people that attended were looking to meet smaller dogs or cats, so at the end of the event, he had to be returned to his least favorite place.
According to the LBACS volunteer, Gallant enjoys long walks and being pet or brushed. He knows the commands for âsitâ and âdownâ and is friendly with people. He is great on leash, but is less great around lizards, squirrels, and small dogs. He was amazi
We are bringing our #shelterspotlight back for one of the cutest Australian cattle dogs we've ever met, Banjo! đ
Banjo knows sit, down, and shake hands. He is tidy in his kennel and never makes a mess when he hangs out in staff offices (even when left alone for a bit), which leads us to believe he is house-trained. He has been friendly while meeting shelter visitors. Like most cattle dogs, Banjo likes to sniff new people briefly, but he quickly goes into wiggly, friendly mode. He is good on leash, but he'd be jazzed to find a buddy that would help him fine tune his existing skills. Banjo LOVES squeaky toys and will happily bring them to you to throw for him. He has done well with other dogs in shelter playgroup so we believe he could share a home with another social dog. Banjo's feelings about cats are an unknown at this time.
Banjo is looking for an active best friend who will take him on adventures. He will gladly repay you with snuggles, cuddles, and some quality lap time at the end of the day. We just love this little dude and we think you will too!
Looking to adopt? Visit City of Long Beach Animal Care Services to meet Banjo, or one of the many other amazing #shelterdogs in need of a home (like his playgroup buddy, Showtime #A702831). You may have noticed that our posts lately havenât included Levi. We were hoping to make a long overdue adoption announcement this week, but unfortunately, itâs become a return-to-rescue sort of post. After 6.5 weeks, Levi seemed to feel the loss, but it wasnât meant to be. Weâre going to do our best to find him a true forever family so this becomes a distant memory. Dogs are resilient, and heâs no different.
Levi was dealing with separation anxiety in the home, but heâs in great hands with his temp foster who is an experienced dog trainer and ready to do the work while we put together a long-term plan. We have high hopes for Levi the Lovebug. After all, heâs never met a human he didnât immediately want to know.
Follow #K9KismetLevi for updates on his rescue journey.

Wonderful news for a wonderful dog. Willa is officially home!
Thanks to a sweet soul who chose to focus her dog search on a senior in need of a second chance, Willa will be living out her days knowing what it means to be loved.
From an injured stray to a shelter dog to a pet living in a peaceful home with someone who understands that dogs are family, itâs moments like these that remind us why we do what we do.
To all who donated to Willaâs care including Just Food For Dogs, her foster for being her rock when no one else would, and the volunteers who helped her along the way, thank you! â¤ď¸

Our newest pack member, Ezekiel, developed a cough yesterday afternoon. This morning, our vet confirmed our boy has an upper respiratory infection. đ
With medical upon intake (x-rays, bloodwork, fecal testing, treatment for giardia, treatment for his skin, etc.) and todayâs visit, we've spent over $1,000 on Ezekiel's care so far.
If youâd like to honor a pledge or make a tax-deductible donation to help us with little Ezekiel's recovery, we sure would appreciate it! As an all-volunteer rescue every dollar we receive will go directly to his care.

K9 Kismet Dog Rescue would like to bust Ezekiel out of the shelter so he can start his healing journey, but we need a committed foster to make that happen. If you live in or around Long Beach, Calif., and would like to help us get this little one get back on his paws, donât hesitate to fill out an application to foster today!
www.k9kismet.org/foster/
As a reminder, K9 Kismet covers all expenses (medical, food, supplies, etc.), so fostering costs you nothing.
This is what we know about Ezekiel from shelter staff:
âOn 7/3/24, Long Beach Animal Care Services received multiple calls about a sick looking emaciated puppy wandering around 14th Street Park & the Long Beach Rescue Mission. Thankfully, a kind member of the community took time out of their day to bring this poor dog to the shelter for safe keeping. When âEzekielâ arrived he was clearly suffering from a long time of neglect. Although his teeth place him around 1-2 years old, he only weighs 28 pounds. Most of his bones are protruding, and the only fur that remains on his is located on his ears. Luckily, these are all issues that are easily recoverable and just need an animal rescue or a caring individual to help give him the time & and the love he needs.â
Pet ID: #A723859
Intake Date: 07/03/2024
URGENT: Needs Rescue
Gender: Male
Breed: Pit Bull Terrier Mix
No room at the inn? Please help us share this post! All we need is one home to save one dog. Help us help Ezekiel.đđť
A HUGE thank you to our friend @lisa_pawpals for making this great video! â¤ď¸
Yesterday we said goodbye to our beloved pack member Asher. Today we celebrate his memory.
In November 2019, after having a suspected seizure in the OCAC play yard and losing some use of his hind legs, Asher landed himself on the dreaded red list. Asher's story touched our hearts and we knew we wanted to help, but with only a few days to secure a foster, we weren't sure we would be able to pull it off. What we would soon learn is that Asher's story had touched someone else's heart tooâthe man who would sign on to be his foster dad.
Asher's medical journey would prove to be a windy one. After a series of tests, we discovered a malignant tumor. Shortly after that, he was diagnosed with melanoma on his ear. When we learned he would need long-term medical care, we made him a forever foster and went forward with surgery and immunotherapy treatment to give him a fighting chance. Sadly, those cancer diagnoses would be accompanied by a third in the summer of 2021: a slow-growing inoperable brain tumor.
Always a happy boy, Asher beat the odds and lived every day to the fullest. He was an ambassador for his breed. He was gentle and stoic. He had a zen quality about him that would draw people in, helping him land friends wherever he went. Asher looked after his grandparents and lived for adventure with his forever foster dad. Hikes, trail walks, a day at the beach, a game of fetchâyou name itâAsher was all-in for all things fun.
During the pandemic shelter-in-place order, Asher started showing his flare in the kitchen helping his dad try out new recipes. He enjoyed cooking and eating (mostly eating) and he shared his passion with other dogs. Through our âCooking with Asher Program,â we've helped put food in the bowls of dogs whose families are having temporary struggles over the years, and in the years to come, we will continue to do so in Asherâs honor.
Asher, your zest for life was a gift to everyone who knew you, a gift we will forever be grateful for. Run
Ivy is officially in her forever home! If youâre new to her story, in 2022, we were introduced to Ivy and her seven nine-week-old pups who lived outdoors in someoneâs backyardâhot, dirty, and flea-infested. The pups lived on top of each other for about 22 hours a day in a single crate and Momma Ivy spent the majority of her day trying to hide from an unaltered male who repeatedly tried to mate with her. Ivy and her pups needed a rescue to step up to keep them from entering the shelter system. With the help of our supporters, we agreed to be that rescue.
Eventually, Ivy and all seven of her pups found loving foster-to-adopt homes. Sadly, in March of this year, Ivyâs world was turned upside down when her adoptive mom unexpectedly passed away. Our hearts broke when we heard the news. The world lost an amazing human, and in one fell swoop, Ivy lost her best friend and the only real home she had ever known. Once a K9 Kismet dog, always a K9 Kismet dog, so we jumped into action to bring Ivy back into the fold. We knew sheâd need a safe place to begin healing (and fast). Thankfully our friend and trainer @robertvillaneda agreed to make a spot for her at his facility while we got to work looking for a long-term foster.
In May, our friend @sphinxx72921 referred a new foster to us. The potential fosterâs dog had recently passed away and she was looking to honor his memory by fostering another dog in need. After meeting with Ivy, we knew she would be the perfect pairing.
Over the last 6 weeks, Ivyâs foster mom has helped to heal Ivyâs heart while, in turn, having her heart healed as well. Together we worked to make sure Ivy would be ready for her perfect forever home. Then, somewhere along the way, Ivyâs foster mom realized she'd already found one.
Please join us in congratulating Ivy! If Ivyâs story inspires you to short/long-term foster, we want to hear from you! Remember, fostering costs you nothing and youâll have the full support of the K9 Kismet
K9 Kismet Pippi is very proud of you. You made it to the end of the week!
Weâre happy to announce that Pippi no longer needs bandaging after being hit by a car as a stray. Sheâs still a little skittish around passing cars (you wouldnât blame her if you saw the condition we found her leg in), but sheâs getting less and less fearful every day. It wonât be long now before she can ditch the protective stocking. Like her namesake, sheâs a fearless and incredibly smart young lady and weâre excited to get her into the wonderful forever-home she deserves.
A big shoutout to @zoomroomlb for donating their facilities and time to her, and to @justfoodfordogs for donating her delicious meals. Itâs partnerships like these that allow us to focus our funds on medical expenses and supplies.
If you have a few bucks to spare, we can always use the help. As a 100% volunteer-run, 501(c)(3) organization, thereâs no donation too small. Every dollar directly impacts the dogs in our care and gives us the funds we need to take in the next dog who needs us.

In honor of National Rescue Day, we ask you to help us help our most recent rescue pup, Pippi.
After being hit by a car and losing a toe and the skin on one of her back legs, a Good Samaritan did her best to find this puppyâs owners while getting the medical care she needed. Unable to go the distance alone, thatâs when we stepped in late last week after receiving a foster commitment.
We were able to raise funds for Pippiâs initial visit, but still need funds for frequent bandage changes, her spay, additional vaccinations, and supplies.
A generous donor has agreed to match dollar-for-dollar up to $1K through this week. Please donate today for your money to have twice the impact.

On October 25, 2022, a bonded pair of dogs with mobility issues named Roger and Freddy were given a second chance at life when a kind couple agreed to be their forever fosters. This act of service allowed us to save their lives and post bail for them at the shelter. Since then, theyâve known love and comfort in ways we canât imagine they ever knew before. (After all, their path to the shelter was by way of a ten-mile drive south of where their microchips were registered where they were dumped near the 710 freeway.)
Due to a recent sharp decline in his health that had us unable to keep him comfortable any longer, we had to bid farewell to Forever Foster Roger (aka Gramps). We were able to do that in his happy place, in the presence of the people who have reminded him daily that his life had worth.
Thank you to all who have donated to our rescue so that we may continue to offer seniors the dignified last chapter we desperately wish they could all have.

Meet Chuck. He's a three-year-old Labrador retriever-shepherd mix who is considered the "ranch kangaroo" by his fosters, our rescue partners at The Dank Dog Ranch. Chuck is a real buddy dog who could hug you all day if you let him. He understands pack leadership with humans and loves other dogs. Chuck is easy on leash and very food-motivated.
