Eight weeks ago we featured Onion (LBACS #A732542) as one of our 12 holiday #shelterspotlight dogs. We thought for sure this super cute shortstack would get swooped up in no time, but sadly, that hasn't happened. Yet.
Onion is a seven-year-old, male American Bully who was picked up by animal control officers on 11/14/24 after they received reports of a dog wearing a t-shirt sitting alone on the sidewalk for several hours. His owner never showed up to claim him, so Onion is now included in the depressing list of uprooted senior dogs who suddenly find themselves receiving their AARP magazines at the shelter. If you follow our work, you know we have a soft spot for seniors, so it breaks our hearts to see this boy still sitting in a kennel. Onion is a sweet and easy-going fella who doesn’t let the loud shelter get in the way of his Zzz’s. When he’s not snoozing, he loves his walks (as you can tell from his happy lil’ trot) and will gladly sit for treats. Onion really doesn't want for much. A leisurely stroll around the neighborhood, some yummy snacks, a comfy bed to nap on, and a few good old-fashioned belly rubs would suit him just fine.
Looking for an easy-going ride-or-die sidekick? Go meet our friend, Onion! (You can thank us later. 😉)

PSA (from K9 Kismet Adoptable Clark): Old dogs CAN learn new tricks!
Senior dogs make loyal, loving companions. Content with simple pleasures like a good meal, a warm bed, and a relaxed-paced stroll around the block, senior dogs make ideal pets for families seeking a more low-key lifestyle.
If you are looking to adopt a new family member, please consider opening your heart and home to a senior dog. Their unconditional love will change your life.

We’ve always wondered if Tiger Lily would enjoy a cat friend. When she happened upon this fella while she and her foster were out-and-about, this was her reaction. “Enjoy” might be a strong word. “Indifference” might be a better way of putting it. Either way, good on her! ☮️
Seniors need forever homes too. Help Tiger Lily find hers—like, comment, share.

On October 25, 2022, a bonded pair of senior dogs with mobility issues named Roger and Freddy met a kind couple who agreed to be their forever fosters. This act of selflessness allowed us to save the lives of a bonded pair who needed a lifeline out of the crowded shelter, and needed it fast. From that day on, “the babies,”—as their foster parents called them—knew love and comfort in ways we can’t imagine they truly knew in their previous home. (After all, they were picked up by animal control officers in an abandoned industrial lot that’s located ten miles south of where their microchips were registered.) Like most rescue dogs who have been given a new lease on life, they knew it. They lived indoors on cushy beds, ate the best food around (thanks to @justfoodfordogs donating their daily nutrition), enjoyed the peaceful tranquility of a private backyard, and were afforded the love and patience that comes with being a cherished family member.
We had to bid farewell to Roger (aka: Gramps) in May of 2024, and now Freddy (aka: Poncho) after he experienced a sharp decline in his health and mobility. Fortunately, we were able to do that in his happy place, at home alongside his two favorite people as he got to experience the decadence of chocolate cake.
Thank you to all who have donated time and/or funds to the rescue so we may continue to offer seniors the dignified last chapter we desperately wish they all could have.
Rest in love, Freddy. 🤍

🚨 Let’em know, Chuck! This volunteer firefighter is sounding the alarm: After being stuck in rescue for nearly a year, and with no adoption apps to show for it, Chuck is declaring an emergency. Being good with other dogs, active, and an expert cuddler has—shockingly—gotten him nowhere. What’s a handsome, healthy, four-year-old firefighter gotta do around here to be noticed? 🚒👨🏼🚒
Want to meet Chuck? Apply today and we’ll let him know his A-Woooos have been answered‼️

Please join us in welcoming our newest pack member, Missy (LBACS #A476755).
On 11/24/2024 this sweet senior was picked up as a stray in Long Beach, CA. When the team @lbanimalcare ran her microchip, they learned that she briefly stayed with them as a pup 12 years ago. Missy’s “owners” redeemed her back in 2012, but when the shelter reached out to them this time around they denied even knowing her. Leaving Missy, a 13-year-old with mobilty issues without a home for the holidays. 🤬
The shelter is a tough environment for any dog, but a cold, hard kennel floor is especially difficult for a 13 -year-old with medical needs (stiff gait, hindlimb weakness/ataxia, cutaneous masses and mild incontinence). If you follow us you know that senior dogs have always had a special place in our hearts. While Missy wasn’t a dog we had planned to feature in our Give the Gift of Home 12 Day focus, when the shelter put out a rescue plea for this lovely, vintage lady, we knew we wanted to help. First we’d needed to find her a long-term foster. As it would turn out, Missy was already working on that part. 😉
Thanks to a big-hearted shelter volunteer (and her family), Missy will have the opportunity to live out her days on a comfy bed in a warm home surrounded by people who love her.
Missy will see our vet next week for a full evaluation. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to help us keep Missy comfortable, we would be very grateful.

Meet Dupree. Give him the gift of home this holiday season by adopting, fostering, or (if you are part of a rescue organization with an open spot) bringing him into your pack. Let’s work together to find Dupree the loving home he truly deserves.
Dupree is a three-year-old male Alaskan Malamute mix who was found the evening of 5/11/24 in LB. The streets were unkind to him. He needed to be patched up by the shelter’s medical team because it seemed like this friendly guy may have encountered other dogs that weren’t so interested in playing nice.
Dupree is an incredibly sweet dog with all kinds of personality. He loves playing with his toys, but he’s also a bit of a planner: At one point, Dupree will decide it’s time to start inspecting the perimeter of the yard for a place to stash his prized possession. With meticulous care, he’ll tuck it into the gravel or dirt. After all, Future Dupree is gonna wanna play with that and he’d hate to disappoint him. People love Dupree’s expressive face and he loves the people. He also enjoys long walks and hanging with his dog friends.
If Dupree speaks to you and you’re in a position to foster until he is fully decompressed and adopted, we want to hear from you! As a reminder, fostering is free and you’ll receive the training support and education you’ll need to succeed as a foster. If you’ve been considering fostering a dog in need, now is the time. Let us know you’d be willing to open your heart and home to this dog in need by submitting a foster application through our website. https://www.k9kismet.org.
Always a big supporter of the community’s dogs, @zoomroomlb in Long Beach, California is sponsoring Dupree’s adoption fee, and offering adopters a free assessment, and one free private training session! In addition to that, we are teaming up with @friendsoflongbeachanimals to send him home with a care package, complete with a collar, leash, bed, blanket, Kong, treats, and poop bags.
