We are open 11 AM - 5 PM, Tuesday-Saturday. There is no appointment needed for adoptions. ADOPTION PROCESS:
1. Do you have any other animals in the home?
(158)
We post all available animals in the respective "Available Dogs" and "Available Cats" photo albums.
2. If you are interested in adopting an animal seen in one of those albums, stop by our facility during open hours. You may need to bring the children or pets that will be in the home so that their compatibility with the animal can be assessed and we can complete a meet and greet.
3. Our staff w
ill interview you to determine if you and that animal are a good fit for one another. Here at GHS, we aim to facilitate successful, lasting placements. As a result, you may be asked some or all the following questions:
Do you rent or own your home? Are there children in the home? Have you adopted an animal from a shelter before? What veterinarian do you use, and would you be willing to list them as a reference? Do you have a fenced yard? Do you have any prior experience with the breed you are seeking to adopt?
5. If our staff approves the match after the meet-and-greet, you will complete all requisite paperwork and pay the adoption fee. The adoption fee is $65 for cats and $85 for dogs. This fee covers a variety of procedures and treatments including:
Spay/Neuter procedure
Flea and tick treatment
Heartworm test
Rabies vaccine
FELV/FIV test
DHLPPC or FVRCP vaccines
6. You will take your animal to their new home! Many smiles are involved and sometimes even some happy tears!

We are sighing as we write this post... again 😔
We are facing an unprecedented challenge as we have officially reached full capacity in our kennel facilities. Despite our best efforts to manage the high volume of animals in our care, we have been forced to pause intakes once again to ensure the well-being of the animals already in our facility. Recent adjustments to our intake procedures allowed us to momentarily alleviate the strain on our resources. By reopening our intake process on an appointment-only basis, we hoped to balance our capacity and care levels. Unfortunately, the demand for our services has surged once more, compelling us to take immediate action to avoid overburdening our staff and compromising the quality of care we provide. We are deeply committed to finding loving homes for every animal that comes through our doors. Our small but dedicated team is working tirelessly to ensure each animal receives proper care and veterinary attention. However, our capacity is a limiting factor in how effectively we can meet this commitment.
In light of the current situation, we urge the community to assist us by taking the following actions:
🌟 For Found Strays: If you encounter a stray animal, please hold onto it during the 7-day stray hold period in hopes of locating its owner. Greenbrier Humane Society can post this animal to their page in effort to find its owner. This will help us manage the flow of animals and provide us with time to make space for new arrivals.
🌟 For Pet Owners Looking to Surrender: We encourage you to participate in our Responsible Pet Rehoming Program. Through this program, we can leverage social media to help find a new home for your pet, ensuring they are placed in a loving environment while minimizing their time in the shelter.
🌟 Become a Foster: If you have the ability to open your home to a shelter dog or cat, we will provide all necessary supplies! Fostering not only helps alleviate our capacity issues but also offers the animal a temporary reprieve from the shelter environment.
We appreciate the patience and understanding of our community as we navigate this challenging period. Your support, whether through fostering, rehoming, or holding onto stray animals, plays a crucial role in helping us continue our mission. We are grateful for every bit of assistance and are hopeful for a resolution that allows us to once again accommodate all animals in need.

Meet Marley, the 2-year-old Retriever mix with a flair for the dramatic, decided that his adoption headshots needed a little extra pizzazz. 🌟 You may remember him from his first debut as sleeping beauty.
As the photographer tried to capture his "serious and sophisticated" look, Marley had other ideas—like playing an impromptu game of tug-of-war with the props!
With one end of the rope in his mouth and a twinkle in his eye, he posed like the true superstar he is. 😎
Who needs to share the spotlight with other pets when you can steal the show all by yourself? After all, Marley knows he's a one-dog wonder, and he's ready to charm his way into his forever home—just as long as he can keep the rope as a souvenir!

It’s been an eventful few days for our Shelter Operations Manager and our Office Manager! Thanks to a scholarship from Best Friends Animal Society, these two ladies were able to make their way to Florida and participate in the National Conference🐾 The first day has been a blast, and they are ready to be a part of the remaining days, making even more friends! 😸 They are making a lot of connections and learning even more to help us continue our lifesaving mission! #BFNC24 #SaveThemAll
In honor of the rainy weather recently we want to share what fun sun-filled days look like at GHS! Calvin was loving his personal water dunk to help cool him down in the warm temperatures🐾😁 We are happy to say Calvin took his freedom ride this morning to his forever home! (picture in the comments)
In honor of today's #FiveDollarFriday, we are giving you all the update you deserve! 🐾 Sweet Treasure is healing beautifully. Her favorite activities include laying in the grass sunbathing, hanging out on the couch, LOVES belly rubs, and grunting like an alligator for those lovins 🐊 To know that just a week ago, this girl was terrified of us all. It didn't take long for her to warm up to us, but she was definitely terrified of what the days ahead promised her... safe to say she's happy with those results! We were able to remove the mass that was on her, and happy to say that it was a benign fibrous tumor. Treasure is going to make the right family so happy, and we cannot wait to watch the rest of her journey with us at GHS. In efforts to #SaveThemAll, be a part of our change at GHS and help fur-babies just like Treasure! ❤️ 💌 P.O. Box 926 Lewisburg, WV 24901 ☎️ 304-645-4775 PayPal and Venmo in the comments ⬇️
From lone wolf to pack leader! 🐾 Tucker has made so many milestones while being with us at GHS. We know we have some heeler lovers out here- and you'll know they can cross a boundary in a blink of an eye! He is becoming more aware of his surroundings every day that passes, and is becoming a friendly companion to everyone! He was showing lots of kennel aggression, which can be common with his breed, AND our environment. This boy had so much energy and just didn't know how to get it out other than showing aggression, which was a need for love! 💕 A huge thank you to Kendra, our Behavioral Specialist, who is the amazing person behind the camera! She spends countless hours every day working with animals like Tucker. With patience, love, and lots of compassion, we're able to do what we do! #SaveThemAll
Tucker spotlight- because he is making friends! 🐾 This sweet healer has been a little unsure of himself when it came to sharing the attention with a fellow canine companion. But with the proper patience and introduction- he has found a friend in Cain (video below) AND Jane! Him and Jane's video will be in the comments below 🥰⬇️
Who said we only house dogs and cats at GHS? 😝 Just kidding… please don’t bring us snakes. But seriously, what should we name him? 🐍
Meet Houdini: Master of Rolling, Lover of Fetch, and Connoisseur of Cuddles! Houdini was brought to us as a stray in April of 2023... you heard that right... over a year ago! He was adopted soon after, and once being in a home for a couple months, at no fault of his own, he was returned for not being a good fit. GHS is always understanding, and we know it doesn't always work! That's what we're here for. But it doesn't mean he couldn't be a good fit for your home! 👀 Houdini has a solid track of making a friend in nearly everyone at GHS, playing his heart out, and relishing in the comfort of his stuffed animals. If you have visited him before, he will greet you with the bunny hops or his favorite stuffy in his mouth- come see for yourself! There is no better time than NOW! Thanks to Cathy Bissell and BISSELL Pet Foundation, all adoptions are covered for available animals! Before going home with your new beloved friend, they will be vaccinated, microchipped and have already been spayed and/or neutered. #EmptytheShelters ☎️ 304-645-4775 📍 151 Holliday Lane Lewisburg, WV 24901
Life at GHS isn't the same as it was running loose! Who remembers this sweet boy who was running around Lewisburg for several days? We have named him Wild Bill and figured we'd show you all how he is adjusting- he's loving all the attention now! 🐾 From wild wanderer to belly rub lover, Wild Bill's journey to safety is a tale of resilience and love- we are so happy to be caring for this sweet boy now. Wild Bill has been vetted in and is available for foster or foster-to-adopt. Once he is neutered, he can be YOURS! 💕
