West Nile Virus is still a threat, even in California. Our 4th case just confirmed. Friendly reminder to remove any standing water that serves as mosquito breeding ground. And vaccinate. Having treated many cases of WNV before the vaccine was widely available, I can assure you the disease is often fatal in older and severely affected horses.

Updates on current disease outbreaks are listed here as they occur and will include the date listed, disease name, location and current status. Specific premises will not be named but the general location by town, county and state will be listed. When locations, events or horses are at risk they wil...

Screening for disease is not always a good idea. Why? The likelihood that a patient with a positive (abnormal ) test result actually HAS the disease varies widely test to test. (yep, positive predictive value, my 🤓 friends). Some (internal medicine) tests worth screening for: resting insulin level; general wellness bloodwork; serum Vitamin E; gastric ulceration in a barn/herd.

Foals can exhibit a wide range of "crooked leg" problems - some they grow out of, some need bandages or casts, others require therapeutic trims and/or shoes, and a small number require surgery to correct. Great article in this months magazine (w/ input from yours truly).

Springtime=green time here in SoCal and we’re all enjoying it! 💚 Even the pony with Cushings and uveitis. Grazing muzzles might look bad ( ?) but they allow pasture time for those with metabolic disease and are generally rapidly accepted by the wearer.

Now that we're all talking Vitamin E, and there are dozens of brands on the market...it's important to remember that Vit E supplements are not all equally bioavailable to horses. Look for natural (not synthetic) forms with d- (not dl-) in front of the "tocopherol". Liquid forms are more bioavailable than powdered, and micellized more so. (Bottom line: natural, liquid, micellized d-alpha-tocopherol is best bet).

Without high quality green pasture grazing, most horses require Vitamin E supplementation. Some with higher demands (exercise, lactation) will benefit from pasture + supplementation.

It's officially winter! CA released the last property quarantined for VSV this week. After a 30 day waiting period (to be sure no new cases crop up), California and the US will once again be declared VSV-free 👏 👏 👏

So much more to sports medicine than lameness - we love a recheck exam that requires a gallop! (With exercising ECG in this case)

Some barns double down on our fasting instructions for gastroscopies and we ❤️ it. Double nylon muzzles prevent side scooping of shavings. Gastric ulceration at the pylorus is common - it's critical to see this region clearly.

ISO a pony or small horse in the Central Coast of CA region for a client's gastric ulcer-prone mare. I love adding a horse friend to the management protocol in tough ulcer cases- treating ulcers is step one, preventing recurrence is a very important step two in managing this condition.

Winter coats coming in fast! It's not the cooler nighttime temps we're seeing in California - photoperiod is the primary factor in haircoat growth (pineal gland, melatonin, prolactin involved for the nerds like us 🤓)

Did you know?? in horses is exceedingly rare, requires more than the standard blood test to diagnose, and is not to blame for cresty necks, , sluggish demeanor or bad attitudes (to name just a few misconceptions 🤓)

An often silent cause of poor performance in the sport horse, intermittent DDSP is diagnosed by dynamic or overground endoscopy. This condition is tricky to confirm without exercise, and has several possible underlying causes. 👀 see the epiglottis disappear beneath the soft palate, reducing the airway diameter, then replace, restoring normal airway shape & size. This displacement occurred intermittently throughout the ride. 👀

Atrial fibrillation in the horse doesn't have to mean retirement! This patient transitioned from eventing to dressage (plus a little jumping) after the diagnosis. Conversion to normal rhythm is possible in some cases as well. ❤️

True: VS is rarely fatal in horses.
False: VS is nothing to worry about.
My POV: VS can be very painful for affected horses, and if we don't all work together to slow the spread of this contagious disease, we will be dealing with it all summer. https://thehorse.com/190349/protect-your-horse-from-vesicular-stomatitis/?fbclid=IwAR2kzMjlgm0bXp-Khj4_3JAh3LLFWCp7o8gdbsSwP--gOgRAPgBXHCWCDS0

Researchers investigated how you can best protect your horses from contracting the vesicular stomatitis virus. Here’s what they found.
