‼️Adoption Alert ‼️
Flirt and Joey have found their people!
Many of you may remember our posts a few weeks ago aboutJoey and Flirt. Two very special boys that were saved from a bad situation and brought back to life and health by foster moms Jess and Marissa.
A wonderful family (and previous adopters) The Bissell’s immediately responded. They recently lost Soxx their CAG and were heartbroken 💔 After hearing Joey and Flirts story they asked to meet them. A few weeks later and it was truly like this was MEANT TO BE!
Aaron (pictured below) 👇🏼 has a way with the birds. He befriends them almost instantly. Aaron stepped outside to get carriers and Flirt began flock calling! That’s when we knew everything happens for a reason!
Joey and Flirt remain together ~ they now reside in a 46x36x78 enclosure with all the care and love they will ever need!
This adoption was very special to all involved! We are anticipating lots of wonderful stories and videos! Stay tuned for more of Joey and Flirts journey with the Bissell family!
Congratulations 🎉

Hi!! Tango just hangin' out here on this beautiful fall day in New England.
We have been incredibly busy here with new LED's being installed by Rise (a program initiative we recently qualified for). We are able to have energy saving lights installed to replace the 1980 bulbs we currently have. The install is in progress as we speak!
We are excited to know our lights will work for longer periods of time, save us energy as well as money! The install costs our rescue around $1,000 for the entire 11,000 sq ft building.
Tango couldn't be more excited! Especially since we have proper lighting in our bird rooms!

We agree One million percent!

I responded to a gal today who was feeling terrible for birds at a chain pet store.

******
I’m sure what I’m about to tell you isn’t what you’re going to want to hear.

When you buy birds from Petsmart, or Pet Supplies Plus, or Petco, or any big chain pet store, really – as much as your heart is leaning into it – it’s not rescue. They’re babies. They’ll find a home.

When you give your money to one of those big chain stores – all you’re doing is funding them to buy more. And more. And more. And more. And more. There are giant bird farms down in Oklahoma, where they are mass producing these birds, and bringing them to the chains, where they then sell them to people who don’t know what they’re doing.

At best, they learn and become one of us - a bird person who does their very best. At worst, they go get another one when this one stops being pliable, because “he needs a friend!” or “they were born to mate. He needs a mate!” and they double the problem, and double down for Pet Store, that people will buy their animals. Then they inadvertently breed. And so on and so forth – and then, they call us to take on the problem they’ve multiplied because they “just don’t have time anymore.”

If you’re giving organizations or stores money to solve a problem they don’t think is a problem – you’re not fixing anything. You’re just a customer.

And they certainly don’t see it as a problem. Which is evidenced by the 20 something green cheeks we have in the rescue right now.

It's probably not a popular opinion, but it’s the truth.

I’ll probably make this a post. Please don’t feel targeted – it’s not you. It’s them. Sometimes, I swear they make them look pathetic just to rub on your heart strings so you’ll go “rescue” that under one year old little conure.

Meanwhile, we have 20+ who are in various stages of training and life cycles here at the rescue, for a fraction of the cost, who are probably more healthy, have already been converted to a good diet, and have already been detoxed off the crap seed that they’ve grown accustomed to at those stores who don’t educate themselves OR their customers, and who don’t take great care of them to get them a good start at life.

Please don’t support it. Because that’s what you’re doing. You’re funding that.

If you are bound and determined not to adopt a bird who is in rescue, then at least go to a family owned bird specialty store like Casa La Parrot, where I know that the birds are cared for with top notch care by people who genuinely care about them.

Shared and SO RELATABLE
WE DO CARE, We Can Help!

Rescuing is financially and emotionally draining, one of the most frequent calls we have received during this past week is about taking in Umbrella Cockatoos, not an emergency situation in these cases. This time on two occasions: The noise, the plucking, they are difficult birds, etc.

While we are here to help, instead of taking them in immediately we want to provide these babies another opportunity in their actual homes of 18+ years, so we have provided these families some tips and I am planning on visiting one of them to provide some in-person Education and bring several enrichment toys, and pellets. I do all of this FREE- because I care!

One of the cases is a plucking/self-mutilation case. We have already made plans, and they agreed to take her to our vet for more examination. We will continue to stay in contact, but if nothing in their behaviors changes during these weeks, we will be taking them in.

Cockatoos can be difficult because they require a lot of attention, time, patience, and care. These birds are high maintenance, both physically and emotionally, as they demand a lot of attention and a great deal of time outside their cages. Cockatoos are one of the most consistently surrendered parrots, handed over to Sanctuaries and Rescues with regularity.

Some tips that can help Cockatoo owners:

1-Provide mental stimulation: Cockatoos are intelligent and curious birds that can get bored easily. To prevent feather picking and destruction, provide them with toys, branches to chew on, ropes to climb, and mechanical puzzles. You can also try playing music or showing them films.
2-Establish a schedule: Cockatoos should be put on a schedule and given boundaries, similar to human toddlers. This helps them learn to entertain themselves and anticipate attention from their owners.
3-Handling: Only pet a cockatoo's head, not its body. Stroking the body can cause hormonal stimulation and sexual frustration
4-Be patient: When first meeting a cockatoo, speak in a soft voice and take it slow. Offer your bird a treat and comfort.
5-Remember, Cockatoos are high maintenance and require a lot of time and care, even later in life.

❣️ADOPTION works❣️
We are often asked by those interested in adoption why our program is designed around
Multiple visits? WHY?
Sounds like a lot of work.
We feel differently!
We make it fun, engaging, educational, and it’s FREE training. We cover essential topics each visit. We assure our adopters a successful transition when they follow our guidance!

🔹Pictured below 👇🏼 is Miss Mindy and her potential human companion Jill. These girls are slowly getting to understand one another. We have had multiple visits including educating on proper enclosure size, hands on interactions and training, nutrition, enrichment, hormonal challenges, foraging, safety, and much more.

💓We have a minimum of 3 bonding visits after an approved home visit. Many of our adopters have chosen to have more. It works. You have to develop a language of communication with your feathered friends to keep a happy enriched life for all involved.
✅We help develop that relationship here- onsite. And it is one of the most rewarding experiences life offers those of us lucky enough to see it in person💙💙
We hope you see all the joy in these photos!

❣️It’s official ❣️
Max, Lucy, & Snow have gone off to begin the next chapter of their lives!
Leticia and her hubby have a male Cockateil Manu whom is mourning over his mates passing. (He has actually outlived a couple mates now) The integration will be slow and really special to watch. We hope Manu cheers up as soon as he hears Snows sweet sweet whistles!
Congratulations 🎉 to our little trio! To a long life of happiness for all 4!

🔵🟡The dynamic Duo 🩶❤️
TOLIVER (CAG) and PANTERA (BnG)
This unlikely pair have shared a home for almost 30 years! Yes! 30❣️
Both female, both hardheaded, and both are fantastically sweet ~~
With a little bribing and training (this requires patience) they both melt like butter.
Who would t want to share their lives with ALL this cuteness!
Toliver and Pantera currently share an X-Large double cage. They’ve shared cages, and aviaries previously.
To adopt these cuties you must be a homeowner and have the space to accommodate a large living area for the girls to stretch out and explore! They are both foodies and love to train for treats.

💓Meet Holly💓
➡️➡️Cuteness doesn’t even describe our little female bare eyed Too. Holly joined our flock about 6 weeks ago.
✔️She arrived from Brockton Animal Shelter. They were totally awesome and agreed to get Holly an updated wellness exam and disease testing. ✅ She passed with flying colors.
As you can see in the video our beauty Holly is wearing a collar. Although her feathers are growing in beautifully ~~ 8 weeks ago she had a huge gaping open wound. It was difficult to see. It always is. She had been mutilating.
Holly lost her mom ~ she passed away in the home. We aren’t sure 🧐 what Holly witnessed or exactly when her self inflicted behavior started. What we do know is that she is currently thriving in a happy, enriched, engaging environment. Shes a foraging fool! Very toy interactive! The ole’ adage reigns true “a busy beak is a happy beak”‼️
She loves to dance, say “I love you” and she has won the heart ♥️ of everyone she interacts with. She’s precious 🥰
Holly will soon 🔜 be available for adoption.
Holly will thrive with an experienced companion who is well versed with enrichment and the hormonal health of parrots.

‼️Adoption Alert‼️
Our M2 Luca has left the building! 🤩 He is now living the BiG LiFe with moms Tami and Shelly! 💕Luca will give many years of companionship, fun, and love! 💕 He’s a sweet boy with lots of energy. Tami and her family took their time during our adoption process. Driving from over an hour away for multiple trips they made sure to spend time with many of our birds. They kept going back to Luca!
At this point in the process we had more bonding visits to work on targeting, stationing, observing hormonal behaviors, returning to door perch, and how to navigate the settling in period in his new digs!
We wish Luca and his new family a lifetime of happiness 💓
