12/3: You don't like my winter pun? How cold!

✅ Make sure you all have run through your cold weather checks: pipes, pets, people, and (safe) home heating!

Much of central Alabama will reach the freezing mark by 8 pm this evening, setting us up for a long-duration freeze tonight with low temperatures reaching the lower to middle 20s for many. A few of our typically colder locations may slip into the upper 10s!

There is a brief "mild" period Wednesday night as a weather system scoots by, offering some rain showers and lows above freezing.

But, behind that system, another shot of cold air comes for Thursday, with nighttime lows once again in the lower to middle 20s with perhaps a few more locations reaching the upper 10s!

Miss Maggie 🐈 visited our clinic a few weeks ago to be spayed! When her mom sent these before-and-after photos to us, we had to share these adorable (and funny) pictures documenting Maggie’s experience. As you can tell from the first photo, Maggie was NOT pleased during her ride to the clinic. She went home the same day of her surgery and spent the next week relaxing and recovering. The last photo Maggie’s mom sent us was taken a few days after her surgery. Mom said she was excited for her beautiful, happy and SPAYED 6-month-old sweetheart! ❤️ So are we!

Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃 We hope everyone enjoys spending this holiday surrounded by loved ones, whether they have two legs or four! We are extremely grateful for each person who has prioritized getting their pet spayed/neutered, the countless hours trappers put into TNR for stray cats, and every donation that enables us to keep our costs affordable. Your support helps us to continue to fight pet homelessness! 🐶🐱

🍎 Your pet doesn’t have to miss out on Thanksgiving. ✅ If you want to offer a special treat this week, you CAN feed them the following foods in moderation 🥕:
• Green beans
• Carrots
• Sweet potatoes
• Apples
• Pumpkin puree (not sweetened pie filling)
• White, unseasoned, boneless turkey (fully cooked)

🐩 Have a curious pet? If you are hosting, have guests put their bags in a location that your pet can’t reach. Pets may go through bags on the floor and end up finding gum, candy or medications. Also, remember to take out the trash so your pet doesn't try to find food waste that could be toxic or a choking hazard to them. Finally, always provide a quiet safe space for your pet when people visit.

⁉️ Have you ever heard the term “cryptorchid”? Cryptorchidism is a type of reproductive defect that can occur in male dogs and cats, although it is less common in cats than in dogs. When a male is between the age of two and four months, his testicles descend into the sc***um. If one or both testicles haven’t descended by the age of six months, then the male is considered to have cryptorchidism.

Pet owners with a cryptorchid male must be extra vigilant about getting their dog or cat neutered before any problems can develop. There are several risks and complications associated with cryptorchidism if a pet does not get neutered:
1. There is an increased risk of developing testicular cancer in the retained testicle. In the case of dogs with cryptorchidism, they are 10x more likely to develop testicular cancer than normal dogs.
2. The testicle could twist on itself, causing pain and requiring emergency surgery to correct.
3. The condition is inherited, so it’s important to remove the genetic defect from the breed line.
4. Intact males typically develop undesirable characteristics like urine marking and aggression.

In addition to a standard spay or neuter, we are equipped to perform cryptorchid neuters at our clinic. Call to inquire as there is an additional cost for this surgery.

👻 Happy Halloween! 🎃 Follow these tips to make sure your pet remains safe and comfortable today.

🍫 Keep Halloween candies and treats away from pets to prevent them from eating harmful foods. Foods such as chocolate, raisins and sugar-free gums/candies containing the sugar substitute xylitol are all toxic to animals.
🆔 Make sure your pets wear identification tags with your current and correct contact information. This includes tags, collars and microchip information. Be sure to have a current photo of your pet.
🎃 Keep Halloween decorations, candles and jack-o-lanterns out of your pet’s reach to avoid an injury or a potential fire risk.
🧙‍♀️ Keep costume pieces away from pets, especially small accessories, glow sticks and batteries. You don't want your pet to accidentally chew or swallow something!
🏠 Keep your pet indoors. Provide a safe hiding space for them in a quiet room with their favorite toys and blankets until trick-or-treating hours are over. It's also good to keep them in a separate room to prevent them from running outside, if they are afraid of strangers or if they have a tendency to bite.
🍬 Sit outside to hand out candy to avoid opening the door multiple times (which risks your pet darting outside) and to reduce the amount of times trick-or-treaters knock on the door or ring the doorbell (which can be stressful to your pet). Consider it from your pet’s perspective: a dog’s natural instinct is to protect their home and alert you that a stranger has arrived, while cats typically prefer a quiet environment with their family.
