Spring is here, so be expecting emails and reminder phone calls from your vet, encouraging you to schedule your spring wellness visit, please do this—but watch my latest interview with UW-Madison vet school professor Dr. Laurie Larson, first! Dr Larson is an expert in antibody titer testing, and thankfully, the conversation about vaccinations has evolved, especially regarding how frequently our pets truly need them. In this interview, Dr. Larson provides an in-depth look at how titers can guide more personalized and scientifically sound vaccination decisions, protecting our pets without the risk of over-vaccinating.
Veterinarians have accounts with Antech and/or Idexx (large, nation-wide veterinary laboratories that provide parvo and distemper titer testing services, so all vets can do titers if they have accounts with these labs), however, the most inexpensive lab I have found for parvo/distemper titers is the Companion Animal Vaccine and Immuno Diagnostic Service Laboratory (CAVIDS) at the UW-Madison vet school.

Springtime is almost here. What does it mean for our best friends?

“It means more time with my family, helping with the BBQs, and eating everything I can get a hold of, right?” says, Joppa, the Aussiedoodle.

“Yeah, yeah….food, food! I get food!” says Kirby, the Jack Russell Terrier.

“I herd my family into a corner for Sammy, the Chihuahua, to grab the hamburgers!” says Jayla, the Border Collie.

Not exactly the right answers. Let’s see what we can do to help our dogs and owners to enjoy spring. The sun is shining, the temperature is perfect, and we are ready to spend more time outside. Why not include your dog in your family activities?

A couple things training can accomplish in helping you have fun with your WHOLE family this spring.

1) Set Boundaries - This will help him understand where he needs to be at specific times. They can be at a door, an entry into a room, or placement in the backyard. Boundaries can be visible or invisible; just stay consistent.
2) Food Habits – only feed your dog, approved dog food or treats. Let them know they can’t pick up food from the floor or the ground. By allowing them to only eat ‘their’ food, it helps to keep them uninterested in our food. Feed them directly from your hand or food bowl shows them what’s acceptable.
