It would be life changing if more people accepted that dogs do not understand our arbitrary human rules.

Trust me when I say…I’m absolutely the person that wants my dog to not open his gifts until Christmas. In my human brain it makes sense, as though he is waking up each day building his anticipation for the actual holiday.

But here’s the thing. He doesn’t understand or have any idea of how that day is different from today. He just knows that this box smells like freeze dried meatballs. He knows that boxes typically produce rewards and that boxes are sometimes his to dissect.

So when he kept going for the “gift”…nibbling and just taking tiny bits of paper off the corner…looking at me in confusion because why *cant* he have it? I decided to put aside my dumb human oriented brain and just give him the box!

It’s not early. I don’t need to go out and redo and buy more stuff. He’d be happy with another box of tissue paper and meatballs and I could honestly wash one of his toys and throw it in and it would be the best day *still*.

None of this is to say dogs are dumb. It’s to point out that we could save ourselves some of the stress, tension, and upset if we realized more often that dogs live in our world, already under so much control, and are subject to our “invisible” rules and aren’t making decisions just to upset us.

Give the present. Rewrap it. Give it again. They will still be just as happy…and you can be too.

🎄PSA to prospective clients: I think it’s likely that all of us dog trainers & consultants will do our best to make something work if you have needs or a lifestyle that makes it difficult to start training the traditional way (or how we each primarily start with clients).

Today I’m doing a “coffee shop consult” with a gentleman who has a dog who might be uncomfortable with a visitor without having a plan before I show up…and he also had difficulty accessing and submitting the online application. Admittedly I do *everything* digitally nowadays…but when he asked, I had to figure out how to meet to get the information I need before meeting his dog…enter: meeting at a local coffee shop for paperwork & discussion!

I also have “hybrid” programs for those who are outside of my current travel range. We meet virtually first, and then meet within my range (typically halfway for the client) for in-person sessions in public!

If you need accommodations, it’s always worth it to ask! ❤️

If you fit into one of these categories, you can email me to talk through a program that fits for you!

💚 I caught up with my best buddy, Slate & his family for an “outing” last night at our local !

Slate has hit his adolescent stage at 6 months old…and boy can you tell 🤣 this is usually the time when I advise that “less is more” for training sessions. Those neurons are bouncing so fast in the noggin! 🧠

With some small adjustments & guidance, everyone was able to work through the lesson nicely 🙂

Raise your hand if you struggle to advocate for your dog sometimes ✋🏼

Yesterday I was with a client out in a public pet store with her *adorable* but reactive dog. Her dog has come SO far that she typically is only reacting if the human advances toward her and gets too close. Previously she would react at just the sight of people.

So when we were pacing the store…and my client was ahead of me as another shopper walked by…I watched as the shopper asked “is she friendly?!” and my client said:

“No”

Just like that. She said no very politely and kept moving. The shopper was super kind and said “okay well she’s cute!” and was on her way.

I was BEYOND proud. No need for explaining…no leaving the door open to be convinced or for an incident to occur. Firm, kind, clear boundary.

May we all strive to be this strong in our advocacy for our dogs in the new year.

🐾 Quick lesson tips from a professional:

🎄keep lessons short & sweet! 10-15 minutes (can do 1-3x/day)

🎁 find what motivates your dog! Toys? Squeeze treats? Play/engagement? Crunchy kibble?

🎄 give sniff breaks! scatter some snacks in the grass for them to find between tasks (as you see here)

🎁 if they’re energized, do some strenuous play *before* you do some calm, focused, mental training

🎄 remember…if they aren’t “getting it” or aren’t as engaged as you’d like….reflect! What could you change about the set up for lessons? Are you moving fast through the task? Are they still at “1st grade” while you try to ask for “4th grade”?

✨when you just had the best lesson with your trainer✨

Sweet Cody is an energetic youngin who is learning to enjoy walks at a slower pace with his family! One tip I often give clients is to *pre-exercise* your dog BEFORE the walk! That’s right! Here you see Cody’s flirt pole/lure toy which we use to warm him up! We get him bouncy and panting to take the edge off….and then we walk (at a much slower more enjoyable pace for the humans) 😌

Someone please save this old gal 😭

UPDATE: BREN HAS BEEN ADOPTED! 😭🎉🎉

🥺 64 days in and not a single application.

Senior gal Bren’s view.

To be honest, it’s not that great.

We’re 2 weeks away from Thanksgiving, and she’s going to end up spending it alone at the shelter.

It’s killing us.

Her fee is sponsored.
She is housebroken.
She’s waiting on her hero.

‼️Bren must be the only animal in the home.‼️

Lulu is wishing everyone a Happy Halloween! 🎃

‼️Don’t forget:
•costumes and extra visitors may be spooky for your dog! You can always give them a special chew item away from the action while you pass out candy, or leave a cute sign on your porch with the candy for a self-serve set up and snuggle up with a movie with your pup!
•make sure pet costumes are something your dog will enjoy, and that they are well fitted and comfortable! If not, tik tok and Snapchat have great fun filters to provide hands-off dress up 🥸
•keep candy up and away from curious noses 🍬🍫 avoid a visit to the ER!
•make sure your pup has a collar with tags on in case they slip out during candy hour!

Have fun & be safe!! 🧡👻

Welcome to training, Clover & Ivy! 🍀🌿

Both girls struggle with similar yet different behaviors so we put together a training plan last night that will get them started in the right direction.

I really appreciated how their guardian shared that she felt so overwhelmed with all of the different bits of information out there and just “needed someone who was the expert in this” to simplify and guide the way. While training lessons are an investment…they are so valuable in that you are saving time not trying out a bunch of techniques that may not be suitable for your dogs and their specific behaviors. There is no one size fits all approach! Sometimes those internet techniques can do more harm than good…

Professional consultants take into account *your* dog’s history, activity, daily routines, behavior struggles and goals to lead you to the exact plan you’ll need to make the changes you hope for.

I have a rolling admission, but I’m currently scheduling for late December-January 2025! 😱 so often people will wait until things are way worse before reaching out…but I always encourage to sign up the moment you notice behavior issues! You’d be so surprised at what you can learn in just one lesson.

There are some dogs who quite literally take years to show me that I’m in their trusted circle. Burt is one of them.

I met & started working with Burt almost 6 years ago when he was first adopted. He had quite a lot of apprehension with strangers and any physical interaction made him nervous. I think in the last six years the most contact I’ve ever had (after numerous lessons) was when I was helping to teach a chin rest…just his chin on my knee to work on cooperative care. He wasn’t ready for more than that, and I would never ask that of him for my own benefit.

Fast forward to this year when we started up training with his sister after not seeing him for a couple years. Eventually transitioning to some drop in visits through the week for a break outside with only me…

This is the first time that Burt has given silly & playful vibes…he will go roll in the grass and then gallop over to me to then sit right in front of me for gentle back rubs. Many times he will melt into his belly up stance where he is completely at ease just enjoying the fresh air and more petting.

This is not the Burt I’ve always known, but what an honor to earn his trust. To earn the silly & playful interactions. It’s honestly wild still to interact with him in this way. An unspoken agreement between human and dog.

This will always be my why.

Last night I caught up with my *not so little* buddy, Slate to help his parents navigate some loose leash skills!

After just a couple of minutes, Slate realized how to access the magical contents of his dad’s treat pouch, and continued to be a star student for the rest of his walk! He even offered to check-in with dad after noticing a herd of sandhill cranes 😮

We love our good boy 🥹 bravo, Slate & family!
