"We are lucky to enjoy a pet-friendly city that allows and encourages their presence in our lives outside of our homes. From dog parks to doggy daycare to dog-friendly bars our canine companions are welcome. With this increase in the socialization of our dogs, there is also an increased risk of infectious disease transmission. Most notably canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC), also known as kennel cough. CIRDC is similar to the common cold as it has many different viral and bacterial causes. Bordetella is often the organism that we are most familiar with but is one of many. We are lucky enough to have vaccines geared against Bordetella that can reduce both transmission and clinical signs of infection. Although many Bordetella vaccines are labeled for annual use some studies suggest immunity wanes as early as 6 months. Most of our canine patients are involved in activities that increase their exposure risk such as boarding, doggy daycare, grooming, or dog parks. In an effort to mitigate the risk in a higher-risk group, we recommend a booster of the Bordetella vaccine every 6 months to ensure optimal level of protection."
