Midwest Vet Supply-MyVetStore Online contacted us regarding the potential UPS strike August 1st.
Most of their items ship via US Postal Service or FedEx. They expect these items to be processed & shipped on a normal schedule.
Their concern is that pet food items and prescription diets ship UPS. A UPS strike could potentially increase the number of days that it takes to receive your Pet’s diet orders.
We suggest placing diet orders now in order to receive your pet food items in a timely manner.

It’s official! We have entered Hot Dog Season (a.k.a. Summer)! 🐾🌭🐶☀️
We can’t stress the importance of keeping your furry cool on these hot summer days! 💧🧊
Some tips/tricks for these hot days ☀️:
🧊Always have water and shade available
🧊Pool time is fun way to cool off - whether they like to just wade and splash around or completely take the plunge in the cool water, it is a great way to keep everyone cool on a hot day!
🧊Limit walks & do a “pavement test” to ensure they won’t burn their paws on the warm cement/asphalt. Burned paws can take weeks to heal! You can avoid this by taking morning or evening walks!
🧊 Utilize cooling mats & frozen treats to help them cool down!
🧊 Never leave living creatures in a parked car - It could only take a couple of minutes for the car to reach dangerous temperatures and for your furry friend to overheat (see picture).
🧊Schedule a grooming appointment- having a thinner hair coat and getting rid of mats will help with air circulation and overall body temperature regulation. Give us a call if you think your furry friend is in need of a spa day (groom), Cassie will gladly help!
🧊Watch for signs of heat stroke (see picture), and give us a call if you have concerns!

24/04/2023

It’s safe to say that tick season is upon us!

While preventatives (Credelio, Seresto Collars, Vectra, Nexgard, etc.) help avoid flea/tick attachment, there can still be an occasional tick that attaches.

The best way to find ticks on your pets is to run your hands over the whole body. Check for ticks every time your pet comes back from an area you know is inhabited by ticks (long grass and wooded areas) even if they are on preventatives!

Ticks attach most frequently around a pet's head, ears, neck, armpits/groin , and feet, but they are not restricted to those areas.

How To Remove A Tick With Tweezers:
1. Spread your pet’s hair so you have clear access to the tick.
2. Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin's surface as possible.
3. Pull upward with steady, even pressure. Don't twist or jerk the tick; this can cause the mouth-parts to break off and remain in the skin. If this happens, remove the mouth-parts with tweezers. If you are unable to remove the mouth easily with clean tweezers, leave it alone and let the skin heal.
4. After removing the tick, thoroughly clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol, an iodine scrub, or soap and water.
5. Dispose of a live tick by submerging it in alcohol, placing it in a sealed bag/container, wrapping it tightly in tape, or flushing it down the toilet. Never crush a tick with your fingers.

It is important to remove ticks as soon as possible to prevent transmission of tick borne disease such as Lyme, Anaplasmosis and Ehrlichiosis.

If you are in need of more preventatives please let us know!

🌷Springtime is officially here (we hope)🌷

We all look forward to wonderful warmer weather☀️, open grass fields, trips to the park, and long blissful walks/runs! Here are some tips to keep your pets safe during the season's transition!

🌷Just like us, spring is the time of year for allergies. The most common signs of allergies in our pets include body itchiness, paw licking, and ear infections. There are so many ways that we can support our pets during allergy season.

🌷Spring time toxins- Did you know that lilies (Especially Easter lilies) are toxic for our pets? These beautiful and common household plants can cause toxicity and illness in our pets. Please make sure to keep them well out of reach of your pets. Chocolate is common this time of year, especially during the holiday.

🌷Just like us, ticks and fleas love the warm weather. Fleas do not only cause itching, but they can also cause secondary skin infections and transmit intestinal parasites. Ticks can spread several different diseases that affect both pets and people. Monthly tick and flea prevention is imperative to prevent disease and keep our pets safe. Prevention is recommended all year for the best protection.

🌷Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes which breed and flourish during the warmer times of the year. Heartworm disease is a serious and sometimes fatal disease that primarily affects the heart and lungs, but can also affect the liver, kidney, eyes, and central nervous system. The treatment is strenuous on our pets, and not to mention costly. Prevention is recommended all year for the best protection.

🌷As the ice begins to thaw in lakes, rivers, and ponds, the water is not going to be obvious to your pets that spent the winter months walking over it. Please make sure to keep your pets on a leash while walking them outside near thawing bodies of water.

🌷Everyone loves longer walks, trips to the park, and car rides during the warmer time of year. Being outdoors means more of a chance of your pet wondering off. We recommend having your pet microchipped for identification, which is registered with your home address, cell phone and any other relevant contact information.

🌷If you have any questions about the different things listed above please give us a call!

05/01/2023

You're probably already aware of the risks posed by warm weather and leaving pets in hot cars. Did you know that cold weather also poses serious threats to your pets' health? Here are some tips to keep your pets safe during cold weather!❄️☃️🧣🧤🧦

❄️You will probably need to shorten your dog's walks in very cold weather to protect you BOTH from weather-associated health risks.

❄️It's a common belief that dogs and cats are more resistant than people to cold weather because of their fur, but it's untrue. Like people, cats and dogs are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia and should be kept inside or provided a place to warm up!

❄️A warm vehicle engine 🚗 can be an appealing heat source for outdoor cats, but it's deadly. Check underneath your car, bang on the hood, and honk the horn before starting the engine to encourage feline hitchhikers to abandon their roost under the hood.

❄️Check paws 🐾 Check your pet's paws frequently for signs of cold-weather injury or damage, such as cracked paw pads or bleeding. During a walk, a sudden lameness may be due to an injury or may be due to ice accumulation between their toes. You may be able to reduce the chance of ice ball accumulation by clipping the hair between toes or wearing booties!

❄️Play dress-up 🧣🧤🧦 If your pet has a short coat or seems bothered by the cold weather, consider a sweater or a coat. Have several on hand, so you can use a dry sweater or coat each time your dog goes outside. Some pet owners also use booties to protect their pet's feet; if you choose to use them, make sure they fit properly.

❄️Winter wellness: Has your pet had their preventive care exam (wellness exam) yet? Cold weather may worsen some medical conditions such as arthritis. Your pet should be examined by a veterinarian at least once a year, and it's as good a time as any to get your 4 legged furry friend checked out to make sure they are ready and as healthy as possible for cold weather.
