I can confirm owning parrots is messy business and something you seriously need to consider if you're interested in adopting one!

Are companion parrots clean animals?

It's crucial to understand that companion parrots are messy animals and require a substantial commitment from their owner to maintain the cleanliness and safety of their environment. For example, parrots make a huge mess when they are eating! Seeds, fruits, and pellets often find their way beyond the confines of the food dish, decorating the surrounding area in an array of colours.

As a responsible parrot owner, daily cleaning is a necessity by regularly removing uneaten food, sweeping up scattered seeds, and wiping down surfaces. Stale or soiled food can attract unwanted pests and compromise the hygiene of your parrot's habitat.

While parrots might be a tad messy during their meals and playtime, they are fastidious when it comes to self-care. Feather maintenance is a priority for these intelligent birds, and they can spend hours preening to ensure their plumage remains in top-notch condition. The process of preening however, generates a large amount of dust, and can quickly settle and coat the surrounding area, or even the entire room. Without frequent cleaning, this can quickly become a health hazard for the bird and people sharing this space.

It wouldn't be a cleaning post if we didn't talk about parrot p**p! Parrots need to be light in order to fly, and so frequently eliminate to ensure they are always ready to take to the skies. This could mean your parrot is p**ping every 15 minutes. Keeping on top of the cage and floors around their space is essential.

In addition to this, when parrots play they tend to shred, break and destroy their toys, creating a mound of splinters and broken parts that will need removing to avoid leaving hazards or dangerous broken materials within reach of those busy beaks.

Ultimately it is important to understand the commitment to cleaning that must be accepted when you decide to adopt a parrot companion.

Do you find that mess is one of the most difficult parts of owning a parrot? Let us know!
