Robin's Nest Podcast, Ep. 18: Hero Dogs Maverick and Moxie
Two of our 2023 Hero Dog handlers recently joined American Humane president and CEO Dr. Robin Ganzert on the Robin’s Nest podcast to share more about their hero dogs and the important roles they play.
Maverick, the 2023 Hero Dog Award winner and Therapy Dog Finalist, travels with his owner Kelly, offering steadfast support to military members and their families as an official USO member. Moxie, the Service Hero Dog Finalist, provides invaluable assistance to her owner Katie, who has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a group of rare, inherited connective tissue disorders.
So many dogs in our lives have an inspiring story to tell. Share your pup’s today at herodogawards.org—and listen to this episode of Robin’s Nest wherever you get your podcasts!

Bandit’s Brigade: The Legacy Continues
Adventures with Moxie: Service Dog
Today is Veterans Day — a day meant to recognize America's vets for their patriotism and sacrifice. Many of our soldiers return home from war with scars both seen and unseen.
Thanks to a valuable partnership between American Humane and Coleman Natural, more than 30 veterans have been paired with lifesaving service dogs.
As we approach the 2023 Hero Dog Awards this Friday, it's the perfect time to reflect on one of our 2022 finalist's extraordinary journey, a remarkable search and rescue dog named Keb.
From her spirited puppy days to her illustrious career, she's been a powerhouse of energy and courage. Having been on over 100 missions, including the challenging OSO Landslide, high snowfields of Mount Rainier, and even solving decades-old crimes, Keb's dedication has taken her far and wide. From urban challenges to as far as Scandinavia, her heroism is an inspiration. #HeroDogAwards
Recon
The 2023 Hero Dog Awards are quickly approaching!
As we anxiously await to hear this year's winner, let's highlight last year's finalist in the "Service, Guide and Hearing" category, Recon!
Recon's owner and companion, Bobby, sustained many injuries from his years as a Bomb Squad technician, one of which was a traumatic brain injury. His physical pain and mental trauma made day-to-day activities extremely difficult; and it was demoralizing. That is until Recon came along.
Not only has Recon given Bobby his mobility and stability back, but also his sense of purpose. Those who thought the old Bobby was gone began to recognize the friend they once knew. #HeroDogAwards
#ThrowbackThursday to last year's Hero Dog Awards winner, Ethan!
Ethan, found cold and alone in a parking lot, had an unbreakable determination and will to live. Overcoming insurmountable odds, Ethan is now thriving with owner Jeff who bonded with Ethan the moment he met and rescued him. Now, says Jeff, "he rescues me every single day."
Ethan's story and perseverance are an inspiration to so many, and we are lucky to call him our 2022 Hero Dog Awards Winner!

Sgt. Fieldy
It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of Sgt. Fieldy, our 2018 Military Hero Dog award winner. Fieldy lived out his last few years with a loving family, and we celebrate every part of his amazing life!
2011 Emerging Hero Dog Winner Ricochet
Today we mourn the loss of Surf Dog Ricochet, a true hero. Ricochet did more than just surf, she was a champion for people with disabilities and an inspiration to us all. She won our hearts and the Hero Dog Award in the “Emerging Hero” category in 2011. From her early days on the surf circuit to her incredible work helping others, Ricochet embodied the best of what it means to be a service dog. Rest in peace, Ricochet.
