As always, there was a twist...

Part 3:

Nadia settled in well. I watched her carefully. She would be in quarantine for four weeks to be sure no communicable illness was present.

Blood tests were ordered so I had proof she was healthy.

She was lovely, petite and friendly. She popped her head up every time I came into the barn and greeted her by name.

Then… Wednesday morning, I got an early morning text from my daughter-in-law.

“Houston, we have a slight problem.”😳

I texted back, “I’m afraid to ask, but what’s up?”

“Well, I got a text from Marcia this morning. Turns out Nadia grew. Her growth wasn’t stunted by the fire.”

I couldn’t text fast enough, “What????? We have the wrong goat?”😱

“Uhm … yeah. That’s Rosie, a super friendly yearling.”

Marcia, the gal who was gifting me Nadia, wasn’t present on Saturday due to an unexpected conflict. She has a large Oberhasli goat herd with only two black goats. Only two.

🐐 🐐

We had a 50% chance of getting it right. But that’s not how life goes. At least not usually for us. Are you ready for this?

YES, WE BROUGHT HOME THE WRONG GOAT!

Rosie, a yearling, came home under the alias of Nadia. I thought she was little but was told her growth was stunted due to the barn fire she survived.

About this time, I’m nervously chuckling out loud.😂

I thought her udder looked tiny but was told she had dam-raised her babies last year. Wowza! Her udder really shrunk right up to nothing!😳

Well, Rosie’s never been bred let alone nursed anything! She was so friendly too. But we were told that she is the friendliest goat out of the huge herd. No kidding!💕

But wait, it gets even better.

Marcia, the goat lady gifting me Nadia, doesn’t even own Rosie! She boards her for a guy named Tim.

Seriously! I couldn’t make this stuff up, even if I tried! So, Tim, if you are reading this, I’m truly sorry! Rosie got the royal treatment while she was here. 👑

My husband was dying laughing when I told him. He said I stole a goat! I said I was innocent. He said I even drove the getaway car! Oh, my goodness! But he’s a good guy, he said he would visit me behind bars.

This week I have four goats ready to kid. My husband said he didn’t kid goats so he would make the 700 mile round trip into coronavirus land and back again to exchange goats. I didn’t want to tell him that the real Nadia is due to kid March 16th! He could end up assisting with a roadside goat kidding!

And, folks, it just keeps getting better. Stay tuned. In the meantime, would the REAL Nadia please stand up?

This was a crazy road trip, but so much fun! Baby was a trooper in the car!

The continuing saga... Nadia gets to live with my Mother-in-law’s herd and I get to see her often! We live close by, and I’m over frequently. True to form, this is only a slice of what’s next.

The story continues … the sun always comes up the next morning. ☀️ Heartbreaks are always followed by beautiful heartwarming moments. 💔➕❤️
I choose joy and hope.
It’s better that way.

I made inquiries about a wait list for another black, polled Oberhasli, with hopes of finding one in the next year or two.
Lola was rare, that I knew. But I missed seeing her black coat amid the goat herd.
I looked for her every time I drove up the driveway.

My daughter-in-law disbanded her surviving goat herd about a year after her devastating barn fire and before marrying my son, all the while keeping in touch with those who had her beloved goats.

She texted me last week: “So I just got off the phone with Marcia. She asked if you wanted Nadia? She’s pregnant. She would be a gift.” 💕💕💕
What?
Nadia was a black, polled Oberhasli doe.
Just like Lola.
Nadia was turning 4 years old this month.
Just like Lola.
And Nadia was pregnant.
Just like Lola.

What? A gift for me? Are you serious? I cried.

I asked my daughter-in-law how she felt about it all. Nadia used to be hers. She replied that she would love it and she would get to see one of her babies.

Then she said, “I think it would be a nice, full, complete circle and a lovely integration of our herds.” The circle of giving and a blending of goat herds. 🐐 🐐
Beauty out of ashes.
Always be willing to give. Reach out.

So we planned a road trip.
And there was a twist because, well, just because.
Stay tuned. .

The story continues (this is how I met my husband! ❤️). Beauty for ashes right??

The story continues
(this is how I met my husband! ❤️). Beauty for ashes right??

Three years ago a barn fire wiped out a young woman’s herd of Oberhasli goats.

I didn’t know her but could only imagine the heartbreak. 💔

I sent her a message offering to give her one of my doelings born that year to help rebuild her herd. 🐐

My son, daughter and my husband transported the goat kid one weekend and ... my son was smitten 😍 by the lovely young woman who is now my dear beloved daughter-in-law. 💕

And this past week the circle of giving came round again. The story is amazing. Stay tuned. Always be willing to give and reach out. Always. 🙏🏼

So this is the beginning of the story and the surprise. It gives a little backstory. ❤️

So this is the beginning of the story and the surprise. It gives a little backstory. ❤️

Missing that sweet black goat out in my herd. 🐐

A few days after my black Oberhasli goat, Lola, died 💔, my husband kindly asked me if we would need to get another black goat.

I think so.

That’s love there, he knows me. ❤️

It has been a while since I’ve updated. Stay tuned, there is a big surprise! 😍

My sweet, beautiful Elsie passed away yesterday afternoon. She died suddenly. Elsie was the first kid I delived by myself, the first doeling we kept, the first polled doeling.... She was dark, polled, and beautiful. Elsie was also an excellent mother. Last year she adopted and raised Galina when her dam passed away. I'll miss you sweet girl! 6/27/14--2/25/17.

24/02/2017

Congratulations to Desiree G. and Family on your new herdsire. Hope he treats you well down there in AZ! :)

Noni is due today! Her ligs are going. This is an exciting breeding as there is a lot of black behind this pairing. Noni's dam, two sisters, and niece are black. Remmy has thrown three black kids in the last two years as well as having several black 1/2 brothers. Dohnanyi is on her third freshening and has given me twins every time (so far). Praying for a safe kidding.... and twin doelings! 😍

Hey Moms, Dads, Grandmas, Grandpas, Aunts, Uncles, do you know someone interested in goats? It is that time again! We are pleased to present our fourth annual Oberhasli kid drawing!
This drawing is open to ALL ages (parents can enter kids as well). Entry is free. Limit one entry per person. These goats come from a CAE/CL free farm and we keep a closed herd.

HOW IT WORKS:
This is how it goes: The FIRST KID (buck or doe) BORN ON OUR FARM for the year is the drawing kid. The kid will be registered with ADGA/IDGR. Entries for the drawing closes when the first doe goes into labor. Drawing is to be held when the first kid is born.

TO ENTER:
Please submit your NAME, AGE, PURPOSE (ie: pet, 4H, show, etc..) and BEST WAY OF CONTACT (ie: phone #, E-mail, FB, etc..) via PM or comment (which will be checked at least once weekly). If you are under 18 you MUST have a parent/guardians permission to enter. Please note: we do not de-horn/dis-bud our kids, if desired, that procedure is up to the winner of the kid. There is the possibility of a polled (genetically hornless) kid being born as well.

TRANSPORTATION:
Winner is responsible for arranging ALL transportation.

BUCK AND DOE:
The doe most likely to kid first is OnionCkObers I Am Sabine .
She is bred to Circle33 Cimarron 1875 Outlaw. See planned pedigree below
http://adgagenetics.org/PlannedPedigreePrint.aspx?SireNum=B001834359&DamNum=B001749216
Sire and Dam are pictured below. Additional pictures of them and their relatives are available on the website: Onioncreekoberhaslis.weebly.com

INTERACTIVE MAP:
If you would like to be a part of this feature (not required to enter), just include your city or state. Names will not be disclosed, just a number. For those who just list state, I will add it to the map as the state capitol. The link to the map is on the website on the drawing page.

DISCLAIMER:
There is no guarantee that Sabine will be the first or even kid at all.

This is a random drawing, but we do enjoy your stories too .

***NOTICE FOR PACKERS: For those looking for a pack goat, these goats are from show lines. If you win the drawing and you would prefer, you may pick a kid from one of our excellent packer does (Grade Oberhasli). One in particular consistently throws huge long legged boys that make great pack/cart goats. Her 2013 bucklings were 10 each at birth and her 2014 buckling was 13 at birth and 80 at three months old!

29/11/2016

We have had a tough breeding season this year. Still have a few more girls to get bred. Our herd is a little smaller as well. We lost Nan (The Peninsula's Nancy Giv) end of August to old age. She was 12 1/2. Her daughters; Galina, Bonnie, and Belle carry on her lagacy in our herd.
Liesle passed away from old age last week at almost 11 years old. Her daughters Nadia and Sabine are still in our herd. Liesle only ever had Boer kids before we purchased her. The two Oberhasli breedings we did, produced three black kids and one bay kid.
Citori passed away unexpectedly two days ago. He is survived by Ailis and Galina (in our herd).
RIP my old ladies and stud muffin! 😧

I usually don't start my waitlist until breeding season, but I wanted to get a headstart on this pair. I am looking to breed Okanogan Oberhaslis Gilly to Circle33 Cimarron 1875 Outlaw. This combo would make fantastic show kids! Gilly is consistently milking 1.5 gallons ( 12.9 pounds) per day on her second freshening! On her first freshening, Gilly had a 17 month lactation. Cimarron brings incredible attachment as well as loads of milk. His dam, Leyland, produced 7 pounds per day as a yearling FF. Deposit to secure kids must be received prior to breeding. If there is no interest by breeding season, Gilly will be bred to one of my polled boys since we don't dis-bud.

Gilly has continued to blow me away! She has a nice tight rear attachment. At 5 weeks fresh she is milking.....drum roll please...... 1.5 GALLONS PER DAY (or 12 pounds per day)!!! This is her second freshening! I can't believe I almost canned her (several times)! She continues to amaze me.

Pictures don't do her justice. Taken first day without her twins nursing.
