Did you know most lost pets are picked up less than a mile from their homes?

When kept in the neighborhood where they are found, these animals have a 70% reclaim rate. However, when they are brought to a shelter, the typical reclaim rate is only 17%. With space tight in shelters across the region, and fireworks displays around the corner, we are joining with San Luis Obispo County Division of Animal Services and asking for the community’s help this holiday.

Save space in the shelter by protecting your pets from getting loose, making sure they are microchipped and wearing ID, and taking these steps to reunify any found pets with their owners before bringing them to the county shelter:
1. LOOK LOCALLY - Leash and walk the lost pet around the neighborhood to see if anyone knows where they live.
2. SNAP AND SHARE - Take a picture of the animal and post it on social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, Nextdoor, Lost.PetcoLove.org, and Craigslist.com.
3. CHECK THE CHIP - Bring the animal to a vet or animal shelter to scan for a microchip.
4. FILE AS ‘FOUND’ - Complete a Found Animal Report on the website at https://www.slocounty.ca.gov/Departments/Health-Agency/Animal-Services/Lost-and-Found-Animals.aspx
5. HOLD AT HOME - If possible, hold on to and care for the animal for a few days to increase the likelihood that the pet will be reclaimed.

Oh Deer! You’ve found a fawn alone — now what? Chances are the fawn is just fine! It’s normal for a doe to leave her baby while she forages for food, often for many hours at a time. The best action you can take is no action: leave the baby alone so mom can safely return. Sadly, every year wildlife rehabilitators receive fawns that are not in fact orphans or in need of care.
However, if the fawn is visibly injured, poorly responsive, running around crying, or a dead doe is found nearby, please contact your local wildlife rehab clinic ASAP before intervening. Not sure what to do? Call and describe what you see!

Did you know that pets with microchips are much more likely to find their way home if lost? In 2023, C.A.R.E.4Paws microchipped 3,200 cats and dogs, a record we aim to beat this year! Through June, we offer FREE microchips at all of our Pet Wellness Clinics in partnership with Santa Barbara County Animal Services, San Luis Obispo County Division of Animal Services and CAPA - Non-Profit Organization. Join us to get your pets their permanent IDs—and be sure that they wear collars with pet tags too! Find our clinic calendar and services at care4paws.org/clinicservices/.

About Us

Good Dogma offers positive solutions to training and behavior management. Our primary goal is to educate and provide teaching tools to dog owners, encouraging more efficient communication between human and dog. This enhanced communication, when training and resolving problem behaviors, creates a stronger, increasingly trusting relationship between you and your dog. We encourage students to use everyday as a training opportunity.

Good Dogma always takes your dog’s personality and temperament into consideration. We realize that every dog learns at its own pace. We work with you to explore and bring out the best results for you and your dog; producing a long lasting, loving, stress-free partnership.
