Nomad At Home, LLC Hi, I'm Missy, owner of Nomad At Home. A few years after graduating with my Bachelors, living in Florida, I started feeling stuck.
(19)

Nomad At Home provides housesitting services that range from simple looking after house plants, feeding fish, & bringing in mail to extensive care taking of all sorts of pets and livestock as well as gardens that require permaculture knowledge. I began traveling around the US for a few years working on various types of farms and petsitting/dogwalking. This was not entirely foreign to me when I sta

rted, having grown up on a dairy farm in Eastern Pennsylvania. But eventually I came to a crossroads... As much as I love farming, I also grew to love traveling in my van and the nomadic lifestyle. Nomad At Home is where the two can intersect! Animal care experience includes dairy cows, horses, llamas, sheep, goats, chickens, and of course DOGS. Gardening and permaculture skills come from years of study and hobby as well as time spent as an apprentice on a sustainable commercial vegetable farm. I travel in my much-loved conversion van with my own rescue pup named Rosie. She is a Chihuahua mix and you are sure to see her in many of the Nomad At Home photos! Rosie has spent lots of time on farms with me and is used to being around all animals mentioned above.

EDIT: I have attached links for a GoFundMe page and Amazon wishlist in the comments!

We have to give a special shout out to our team-member, Megan Althouse, who was out doing an early morning dog walk on Tuesday when she noticed the smell of smoke, and quickly saw that it was coming from a house nearby, suddenly flames were bursting out of the window. She did not hesitate and called 911 immediately. The first responders were incredible and got there SO quickly and were able to save all 3 dogs that were inside of the house. One dog was in the room that the fire started in and suffered smoke inhalation and was rushed to BluePearl Pet Hospital. Thanks to the fast acting staff there this dog is stable and will make a full recovery! (Though may suffer from the psychological trauma of this event 🥺). We are saddened for the owner but happy that no lives were lost in this event! If a crowdsourcing fundraiser is created to help the owner get back on her feet, we will update this post with the link. Thank you Megan for being observant of your surroundings and for acting fast in an emergency!!! ❣️

The fire was discovered about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday after the owner left her townhouse for work.

Pom was adopted!

‼️URGENT‼️
Pom ACCT-A-164719 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavioral concerns. Pom must have confirmed placement with an EXPERIENCED ADOPTER or RESCUE PARTNER by FRIDAY, May 24th by 10:00 am. Should Pom's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Due to being significantly overcapacity with animals and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted. If you are interested in an animal please contact ACCT Philly immediately.

Pom was picked up from an alleyway by our animal protection officers and is having a difficult time in the shelter. When she initially arrived, she was biting at the control pole, and would not allow being removed from her kennel (5/19: Pt. was bearing teeth, eyes dilated, lunged at the door and was low growling.")

It is also likely that Pom has never been leash-trained. She is especially weary of leashes, and has attempted to bite them:

On 5/20 staff noted: VERY VERY FEARFUL in kennel, needs slow intro. Warms up outside. Pom was laying on the opposite side of the kennel when I approached [...] I moved the leash slightly and she instantly flashed her teeth at me and ran to the back of the kennel. I tossed more treats and she hesitated before eating them again. I started tossing the leash towards her and she bared teeth, air snapped, yelped, growled, and fled. She was in full panic mode whenever the leash came out. Pom would snap at the leash and when she did get it in her mouth she would thrash and shake the leash in her mouth. I took a break after 5-10 minutes, I gave her a break and sat down with her [...] After another 5-10 minutes of lasso attempts I was finally able to lasso her. She panicked, gator rolled, snapped at the leash, and yelp/screamed.

When in a harness, Pom does exponentially better, but will forget she is on a leash and bounce around. Pom urgently needs to leave with an experienced adopter or rescue that can provide ample decompression time, as well as ongoing training to help with her leash reactivity.

5/22 In the behavior room Pom was pretty stressed: she would focus on the doors to the kennels, pace, and run from one handler to the other. However she allowed full-body pets, and solicited attention. She was momentarily interested in a toy, and allowed a staff member to touch it in her mouth without reacting. She would throw her whole body into me and lean in my lap, and put her paws on my shoulder. Pom was very excited to see another dog, offering play-bows, some barks, and pretty consistent lip-licking. She would pull on the leash, or jump towards the dog and forget she was attached to the leash. When I would pet her, she was able to disengage from the other dog and turn to check in with me.

5/22 per staff: Pom appeared quite conflicted for her dog meet today! She was very curious of the other dog and would approach with high wags, constant lip licking and forward body language. She would do some play bows and frustration barks but when getting close to the other dog she would become snappy, snapping at his face at times. The other dog was fairly aloof to her most of the time, but on times where he would approach she would bare teeth and back away but then play bow and run forward again. Pom seems under socialized and conflicted regarding dog companions and would benefit from slow introductions and learning more appropriate signals.

Pom is a sweet girl who is very confused and conflicted in the shelter; her fear reactivity will take some time to manage, but Pom really needs a patient person to show up for her and give her a safe place to start the next chapter of her life.

Patience please! We have had an overwhelming influx of new client requests/messages coming through. I am working my way through them but it takes TIME to get all the info needed from you, check on dates and availability, and put the puzzle pieces that is a petsitting schedule together. If you are reaching out wanting services with less than one month notice - we encourage you to start reaching out to other sitters in the meantime as well. All professional sitters in our service areas are very busy. One thing I will say is PLEASE include how many pets/what type you have as well as your general location in your initial messages when trying to connect with a petsitter. If you have specific dates in mind you need petcare just go ahead and send those to us right away to help streamline the process. We can NOT check availability for “some time in June” we CAN check availability for “noon on June 20th - dinnertime on June 25th”. If you’ve messaged us a request, but happen to lock in other arrangements before we have been able to respond to you, a follow up message letting us know you’ve gotten it sorted out is MUCH appreciated before we start diving into the schedule to check if we can help you and possibly even rearranging things to make it happen.

WE ARE NOT AN EMERGENCY SERVICE. We try our best to help our existing clients when they are having emergency situations that result in them needing petcare. It helps when we are already familiar with the pets and their needs for us to be able to jump in at the last minute. It is nearly impossible for us to help a brand new client last minute (and by last minute I mean 2 weeks or less advance notice). Ideally we LOVE to receive overnight requests at least 4-5 months in advance. Thank you for understanding!

Did you know we offer a field trip walk add-on to overnight packages!? Our 60-90 minute field trip walks (Adventure Hikes/Trail Walks) are only a $25 add-on* when combined with your overnight package (normally a $55 value as a stand alone service). Suki here takes full advantage 🤩

*This pricing is for one dog and with the expectation that the location we are driving them to is within 10 minutes of your home

Memory post 💖 gone from this world but never forgotten 🌈… Nacho, Zsa Zsa, Shea, Scout, Rudy, Margo. Loving so many pets has its highs and lows, and it always will. I’m thankful many of our team-members got a chance to say our goodbyes to some of these angels 🙏 and to those we didn’t, I hope they felt our love each and every time we saw them.
