These two LOVE the snow and they love playing… so playing in the snow is their favorite thing. lol These two guys, one a Wyoming Mountain Dog (black) and the other a Colorado Mountain Dog (white), were bred for this weather and are loving life. I gave them 15 min outside play time and then back inside to warm up and settle.

Merry Christmas to me!!! Four new saddle leather 5 foot leashes from Bridgeport K9 Equipment. It’s been almost 20 years since I last ordered these leashes and thanks to Franklin, I only have one of them left. But they’ve held him through his first few weeks panic attacks. Cant recommend these leashes enough. It will take me a couple movies to get them oiled and broke in but I hope they last a couple decades like my last ones did.

Franklin’s 7 week update… his playful personality is coming through!! He wants to play with people and the other dogs. He seems to be actually happy and is trying to engage instead of cowering and being stand-offish behavior of before. His face has healed up from all the battles with the crate and he even goes into his crate now on command with no assistance, other than two milk bones. The crate only has 3 extra latches instead of the 11 extra latches at the beginning. His biggest improvement.

He gets excited to see me when I walk outside and runs up to me. He’s no longer on a leash or a cable outside and has free run of the dog yard. Huge improvement here as well.

He was neutered and got all his shots last Monday and had a smooth recovery. He’s gained 8 pounds!! He still has a ways to go but he’s getting there. This morning, I had to adjust his collar because it was snug.

As for formal obedience, it’s still slow going but he no longer panics. He’s learned to stay out of the kitchen and to come when called. He’s always done well with his walks. Next step is to smooth out the sit command.

Today marks 1 month we’ve had Franklin in rehabilitation. He’s had GREAT improvement with the crate, even going in by himself when told. He’s now eating all his food and had a food increase yesterday. He has completed his first round of deworming. Walks are still his favorite thing. He’s been hanging with Bridger in the living room a little bit each day. Today was their first free play outside. Both dogs LOVE the snow. To date we’ve meet over 20 people and have done amazing with each of them. He not comfortable with any grooming, brushing, gentle restraint (like a hug), or having his feet touched so we do a little bit each day. Formal obedience commands have been slow in coming, except the heel/walking command, because he sees all commands as a threat to him. So again, slowly introducing his sit and down commands. Hopefully, next week with have a field trip to town and include a lot more meeting new people.

Day 16, Update on Franklin. Neuter date is set for Nov 13th. He’s had good days and bad days but we keep moving forward. He’s met 14 new people and we started formal training esp with leash manners today. He loves his daily walks around town. Last night was his first close interaction with any of our dogs. And as always, Bridger was a champ and indifferent to Franklins dominate posturing. Franklin did a good walk away, and came to me when I called him. We’ve finally been able to remove all the scabs , I’m guessing from dog bites, from around his neck and do mild grooming with him.

Another update on Franklin…. He’s a 2 year old Great Pyrenees/ Meremma mix. The black & white dog he was with was his father, age 3. The father has escaped again and is on the run. The owner never wants to see him again. If he’s found and apprehended, is anyone in the area interested in him? He will need to be neutered, get extra feedings until optimal weight is obtained and special precautions taken because he will a flight risk but otherwise, I think he’d be a great companion.

Day #4 - update on Franklin. Finished our first three days of decompressing. We were feeding him fist full of treats every time he was out of his crate. The crate was a nightmare the first couple days/ night but he’s settling in to that now too. He has to be on a leash at all times due to his flight risk, to include the ability of going over an 8 foot fence per the previous owner. On the third day (Sunday), he was coming to us to get petted. He likes the kids!!!

Today, day 4, started our training and socialization. My goal is for him to meet 100 new people over the next three weeks. Today, we had our first road trip and since nothing is close to us, it was a 40 min trip to the closest town. He had a weight check (85lb) and met 3 new people. He let all 3 people pet him.

My son snapped the picture while I was talking. Lol But I like that it shows a happy dog.

Meet Franklin (his new name for his new life)….. a very long story but a much needed rescue operation late lastnight. He has a long road ahead of him in recovery from malnutrition and in behavioral modification. He is scared of people and doesn’t like to be touched. As soon as he is healthy enough, he will be vetted and neutered. I’m guessing that he’s a 10-12 month old Great Pyrenees/ Anatolian Shepherd mix.

Mountain lions cut a bloody swath through the dog population around a town in rural Boulder County, Colorado, killing as many as 15 dogs in 30 days.
