EMOTIONS MATTER!
Dog’s emotions really do matter, far more than we may realise.

Emotions matter because emotional states drive behaviour.

Think about how our emotions have a direct affect on our behaviour – we may lash out at others because of the emotions of fear, anger or frustration. Be irritable if we are tired or in pain. Struggle to focus or learn something new if we are stressed or anxious, shut down or over react if we feel insecure or unsafe ….

When a dog’s emotional needs and well-being are not supported and not addressed, behaviour problems are often seen.

Unwanted behaviour shouldn’t be looked at independently or as a specific problem that needs to be fixed.

When needs are met, when emotions are recognised, when body language is understood and listened to, a dog’s emotional state will change, which will in turn bring about positive changes in behaviour.

These are the foundations on which behaviour change is built.

Please don't assume...

This topic never gets old for me, every week I see or experience an interaction with a dog where consent wasn't given.

It's something that as a mother I think it is exceptionally important to teach my children.

Stop means stop - and no means no
AND - dogs need space!

It's that simple!!

Yet, somehow dogs have lost their autonomy, they are an object to be adored, touched, and put into situations where their choices are limited.

We need to start looking at all interactions with dogs through the lines of consent.

Does this dog consent to meeting me?
Does this dog consent to me touching them?
Does this dog consent...

We need to have an open mind, always asking the question and NEVER assuming.

It's also important to do the same with dogs around children.

Just last week I had a large dog come straight up to the faces of my children eating snacks, without any concern from the dog owners.

Did my child consent to be greeted by this dog? No
Did my child feel safe around this dog? Not particularly

It's unfortunate but the days of "my dog is friendly" need to go.

In my opinion it's not an excuse any more for being ignorant.

Not all dogs feel safe around people
Not all dogs feel safe around other animals
Not all dogs feel safe around children
Not all dogs want to be approached or touched
AND
Not all people/children feel safe around dogs
Not all people/children want to be greeted by dogs

Saying "it's ok my dog is friendly" is ignoring their needs, not respecting consent in the interaction.

Do not assume that because your dog is friendly that the other person, child or dog wants or needs to meet your dog.

SO proud of my clients, Margaret and Jeff, and their fur babies, Clark and Riggs! When we last met two weeks ago, both dogs were anxious, distracted, and overstimulated/overwhelmed by being outdoors. Today, they *chose* to relax on their mats in the driveway despite a trash truck coming by and having workers arrive across the street. Bravo! 👏🏼
