Working on rate this morning and focusing on the herd and not singling out just one lamb. He’s a fast learner, really wants to please, and is always photogenic.

Train while you work

Jayden Stone is working with Bear this morning on his down and confidently staying for an extended period of time. We were able to get all of the stalls done, the aisleway swept, and he never moved an inch.

Jayden has been building on his time staying over the course of him being here. This is something we encourage everyone to do with their dogs after leaving our program. Train while you work throughout the day so you don’t have to dedicate an hour just to working with your dog. Work them while you garden, while doing your laundry, or feeding your other animals.

Take advantage of every opportunity to work with your dogs throughout the day and you won’t get behind on your training.

It’s great work for the dogs when the sheep get out but, it is time consuming. We’ll see how well this premier one solar charger does. We currently only have one roll of net fencing and plan to get more. Each section is 164 feet in length. The 120 model claimes to do up to 6-10 rolls of their net fencing. We shall see.

Exercise and Conditioning

Exercising and conditioning are essential in any training program. It is critical for house dogs or working dogs. It’s crucial in our Stockdog program especially in the summers to build up heat tolerance as the temperatures increase.

We utilize our bike to build up our dogs tolerance in the heat in a controlled way as to not overheat them. We also use it in our obediance program to burn off pent up energy making the training process easier.

Here are Yeti and Boone with their first time on the bike.

How do you exercise or build up your dogs tolerance in the heat? Let us know in the comments below.

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

Hardy

We got some new dogs in to work Sunday. Our first week we evaluate where they are and just work on obediance. Come, there, down, load up, kennel up, and come behind. It gives us time to bond and feel the dogs out. Fortunately these two already have a good handle, they just need to get used to us.

We like to have a solid down prior to going to stock and a decent handle. The first time on stock can be chaotic and the down and handle go out the window. If you’re going to have a wreck make sure it’s a controlled wreck. It’s always better to have a controlled wreck in the pen than in the pasture. Always set your dogs up for success.

-Finesse

Our training ewes are finally starting to lamb out. Working on pairs whether it be cattle or ewes is a great opportunity for finesse. Using as little pressure as possible first and being able to read the stock. We have to be stockmen first and use our dogs in a way to handle stock safely in a calm and productive way. But ensure that the stock still respects our dogs.
