Intramuscular banamine? Heck no!
If you watch only one video while scrolling tonight, make sure it is this one created by Dr. Golden's classmate at Beasley Equine Clinic. A bit graphic, but with sound on you can hear Dr. Beasley give a wonderful explanation of why intramuscular banamine should never be given to your horse. If you have given IM banamine and not had this reaction, count yourself lucky! We are all doing the best we can until we know better, and then it is our responsibility to do better! We are honored to introduce Dr. Tess Cummings to the Northern Lakes Equine Practice team!
Dr. Cummings will be spending the next year with us as our first veterinary intern. She graduated valedictorian of her class at University of Illinois and is one of the few equine veterinarians entering practice this year. It has long been a dream of ours to have an intern veterinarian as part of our team. We have been building and planning for today since the inception of our practice. Thank you to all of our incredible clients and patients who have helped create a practice that is able to welcome the next generation of equine veterinarians. We have long been vocal about the extreme lack of equine veterinarians across the country and we sincerely thank you for helping us be part of the change. As you see Dr. Cummings over the next year, please give her a warm welcome into equine practice and to the NLEP team!

Northern Lakes Equine Practice is seeking a full-time veterinary technician or assistant to join our team. We are an exclusively equine ambulatory practice serving northern IL and southern WI. Responsibilities will include handling of patients to facilitate veterinary examination, help with set up of equipment (X-ray, ultrasound, endoscopy etc), driving trucks between calls, stocking of trucks at end of workday, and organizing specimens for laboratory pick up. Candidates must understand that while we strive to keep normal business hours, the nature of equine ambulatory practice is unpredictable and there will be times where the schedule will change to accommodate emergencies. The ideal candidate has an exceptional work ethic, a desire to learn, and a positive outlook. Experience and comfort handling horses is of top priority; veterinary/medical understanding is a plus but not required and will be taught through on-the-job training. It is vital that candidates are dependable, pay close attention to detail, have a good driving record, and have an excitement and love for horses that they can bring with them to work each day.

Looking for an alternative to bran mash to help keep your horse warm and hydrated on these frigid days... consider making "sweet tea"! Mix a full or partial scoop of your horse's regular grain (electrolytes optional) with warm water. It is as easy as that. If your horse does not normally eat grain talk to your veterinarian about safe options for your individual horse. PRO TIP: start with less water to make a more concentrated tea and work up to more dilute tea for maximum water consumption. DON'T FORGET- Horses must always have access to plain, fresh water too. Feeding "sweet tea" does not replace normal access to water! Dr. Golden's horse Spider was more than happy to help make this post!
One of the first questions we ask clients when they call with a horse that isn't acting quite right is, "have you taken a temperature?" A thermometer should be part of every owner's first-aid kit. This video will show you how to safely take a rectal temperature on a horse. It is important to note that while most patients are very tolerant of the procedure some are not, and your safety is paramount! If you ever do not feel safe or the horse is threatening to kick, please do not continue trying.
This sweet mare showed Lauren some major appreciation during her laser therapy session. Licking and chewing are just some of the ways that horses express relaxation and release of tension. She is such a sweetheart! 😍

Understanding how the body works, at a fundamental level, is so important for diagnosing and appropriately treating the patient. The attached video does a great job describing how gastric ulcers form and how we are able to diagnose them with gastroscopy. Take a few minutes to watch it (best with sound). If you think your horse may be suffering from gastric ulcers please feel free to reach out to us to discuss further!

Happy 1st Birthday Northern Lakes Equine Practice! What a year it has been! We started 2019 off with a kick-off celebration and it certainly set the track for a fantastic year! Dedicated to always staying on the cutting edge of medicine we added a gastroscope and laser to our practice this year. In addition both of our doctors completed rigorous continuing education degrees; Dr. Laurel in Veterinary Medical Manipulation (chiro) and Dr. Golden in Veterinary Acupuncture. Dr. Laurel and her husband also welcomed their second child and Hali welcomed her first. We learned a lot, we lived a lot, and we are so incredibly grateful for all our amazing clients and patients. Northern Lakes Equine Practice is a family, and we are so happy to have you be part of it. Here is to a great 2020! Our office will be closed Wednesday January 1st, and will reopen on Thursday January 2nd at 8am.
When your friend is getting their teeth done, but you have to be right there to supervise that the doctor is doing it right... Dr. Golden had to sneak a little nose kiss in there too! Dentals shouldn't be scary or stressful for your horse. Dr. Golden feels very strongly that a good dental includes a thorough full mouth examination and subsequent correction of occlusal issues, it is so much more than just "taking off the points".
