Recently I’ve run into former clients and strangers walking their dogs. I’m dismayed-especially at former clients- to see the dogs lunging and pulling with the owner dragging along behind.
None of the people I see in this situation have rewards on them. Nothing. So the dog has zero reason to cooperate with you and walk nicely on leash. You have absolutely nothing to reward the dog with.
Again- dismayed to see people who have worked with me in this situation. It’s certainly not how I teach loose leash walking.
If you are allowing your dog to drag you down the street, then it is not the dog’s fault. It’s your responsibility to humanely teach yourself and your dog how to walk together on leash.
I can show and teach you how to walk your dog calmly on leash. I can teach your dog how to walk calmly on leash. However, once I leave, it’s up to the owner to continue working with the dog to achieve loose leash walking.
Your dog dragging you down the street after we’ve worked together isn’t a reflection of my skills as a trainer. It’s a reflection of your initiative as as owner.
Also see people quick to go to a “remote” collar. It’s a shock collar with a remote for the owner-who probably has bad timing on rewards and corrections. So the dog isn’t taught anything except that random shocks will occur. Dogs aren’t TVs. Get rid of the remote. Start treating your dog like a feeling intelligent being who has the ability to learn if only you would learn how to communicate effectively.
Harper last year working on leash walking. This video was taken minutes after we saw a bear approaching and an upset fisherman was blowing an air horn 5 feet from us. Very proud of Harper’s ability to recover from all of that and walk happily on leash. Note: she is wearing a harness only. I believe I actually only give her one food reward during this clip. She is giving me eye contact and smiling.
The Girls with their Favorite Balls
When you have 2 Golden Retrievers obsessed with only orange and blue balls. We have several balls in yard. They ignore all but these rubber ChuckIt balls.
Harper practicing her ball catching. She’s not as good as Lyda, but she is working on her technique.
This is why you keep cats inside and dogs on leash and supervised. These 2 coyotes wandered through my yard last night. The motion sensor light did not startle them at all.
Please. Keep your dog on a leash and supervised. A predator will take your dog in the blink of an eye.
Just because you don’t see predators doesn’t mean they aren’t on your property.
So many missing dogs right now in CT. Most could have been prevented if owner used a leash. Never send your small dog out alone for a quick bathroom break. I can’t tell you how many disappear and are never found.
Lyda is so fun to be with. She decided to put her ball on the fence so I can reach it and throw it. So smart.
