SIGNS OF OVERGROWN NAILS:

It’s essential to be able to recognize the signs of overgrown nails. While the specific length may vary depending on the dog’s breed and individual nails, here are some general indicators that your dog’s nails are too long:

Clicking Sound. Hearing your dog’s nails clicking on hard surfaces clearly indicates they need a trim.
Visible Curvature. Long nails may have a noticeable curve extending beyond the toe tip. This curvature indicates that the nails have grown too long and require attention.
Snags and Tears. If your dog’s nails frequently get caught on carpets, blankets, or other surfaces, it’s a sign that they need trimming.
Visible Quick. The quick — the sensitive part of the nail that contains blood vessels and nerves — is visible for dogs with white nails. If the nail extends far past the quick, the nails are too long.

Why do your pets need nail trims?
Nail care is important for dogs for several reasons:

Prevents discomfort and pain: First and foremost, long nails can cause discomfort and pain for pets, particularly when walking or running. Overgrown nails can also curve into paw pads, leading to infections or more serious problems.
Avoid injuries and accidents: Likewise, long nails can get caught on carpets, furniture and other objects, causing torn nails and other injuries. This can be quite painful and it’s common for these types of injuries to become infected – causing an unwanted trip to the vet.
Promote healthy posture: Animals use their nails for traction and balance when walking or running. Overgrown nails can cause a dog to slip and fall more easily. Long nails cause the animal to place their feet differently, affecting their posture, and leading to strain on their joints and muscles.
That’s why regular nail care is essential for your pets well-being. It’s recommended that a pets nails be trimmed every 4-8 weeks, depending on their activity level and how fast they grow.

For pets that require regular haircuts, regular nail trims typically fall nicely into their grooming schedule, but for our shorter-coated breeds, proper nail care can often be overlooked. Scheduling regular nail treatment appointments is key to staying on top of their nail health and preventing any issues.

Humans aren’t the only ones who need a manicure every once in a while. When it comes to your dog’s health and hygiene, consistent nail care is key to promoting a long and healthy life for your pet.

Long nails can break or chip. Sometimes they may even break and lead to cuts in and around the paw which can cause additional pain. Long nails can push into the pup's paws and cause a shift in their posture. Change in posture can lead to joint pain and even arthritis or other musculoskeletal issues in the long term. if not treated regularly and soon enough.

Nail care is more than cosmetic. Long nails can cause pain and in rare cases cause damage to the paw. If left untreated, long nails can deform feet, injure tendons and soft tissues, and cause complications in the leg as the nails place pressure on the foot and leg of your pet.
