We are wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! Please remember veterinarians see a LOT of emergencies over the holiday weekend. Here are somethings to keep in mind do your pet is not one them!

Harmful Foods

Thanksgiving is a time for feasting, but watch out that your pet doesn’t get into any harmful foods. For instance, fatty foods, garlic, onions, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, and yeast dough can all cause problems for your pet. Spoiled foods are troublesome, too, so secure the lids of your garbage cans to help prevent nosey pets from getting into them.

Real Bones

You should never feed your pets turkey, chicken, or other real bones no matter how hard they beg. These bones can splinter easily and injure the soft tissues of the mouth or cause serious internal damage if swallowed. If your pet loves bones, purchase a safe bone-shaped treat from your local pet store for them to chew on after dinner.

Hot Containers

Your dog or cat will probably be curious when they smell something yummy cooking. Keep an eye on hot containers so your pet doesn’t tip them over and get burned or eat something that could be toxic.

How yo keep for pet safe when the fireworks start:

•Walk your dog during daylight hours to avoid times when fireworks are likely to be set off.
•Move your dog to the safe haven each evening before the fireworks begin.
•Provide toys and other things that they enjoy in the safe haven.
•Make sure there are things for you to do too, so your dog isn't left alone.
•Close windows and curtains to muffle the sound of fireworks.
•Blackout your doggy safe haven, so they can't see any flashes outside.
•Put on some music or TV to mask the firework sounds.
•Ignore the firework noises yourself. Play with a toy to see if your dog wants to join in, but don't force them to

It’s baby bunny season!

Eastern cottontail rabbits’ nests are often located in open areas like a backyard or in a garden. The nests are shallow holes in the ground covered with leaves or grass.

If you find a nest, cover the babies back up and keep pets away for a few weeks until the youngsters are big enough to head out into the world. Don’t worry if you don’t see mom around – she only visits the nest at dusk and dawn to avoid attracting predators. Rabbits are not able to find the young if the nest is moved, and it’s always best for baby cottontails to be raised in the wild by their mom, so if you care – leave them there!

If the babies are injured or have been inside your pet’s mouth, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for advice.

Met Green, one of our new patients! Apparently he becomes so stressed on the ride to the veterinary office mom needed a different option. This is how relaxed he was before, during and after our exam(including a vaccine)! Totally different experience! What a wonderful cat!!
