"Fluffy" was born this morning to Farrah who came in with her mom and three brothers in September. They had been abandoned on hundreds of acres in Florida. It took our rescue team 4 days to catch them all. We are so happy that Fluffy will never want for anything!
AppleJack’s Daily Walk
Applejack update!! Here he is enjoying his morning walk! We think he rocks that mask pretty well!!
WE COULDN'T SAY NO TO APPLEJACK
Even though he's only half donkey, we couldn't say no to Applejack. We were told that he was a gelding with some bad behavior issues. What we weren't told is that he had a terrible eye issue. When we saw him we gasped and knew we had to help. His eyes were bulging causing him to appear cross eyed and they were very red and inflamed.
As it turns out, his issues went beyond his eyes. He is also a cryptorchid, meaning he wasn't gelded after all. It was his testosterone level that was making him difficult. He also has locking stifles that make him appear neurological.
Castrating a cryptorchid equine requires surgery in a sterile environment, at about triple the cost of a standard castration. We also knew he needed an eye expert, so we took him to Virginia Tech where they informed us he has bilateral squamous cell carcinoma (cancer in both eyes). The encouraging news is that due to the size and location of the tumors, he's an excellent candidate for surgery with little chance of recurrence, but we need to do it before it spreads.
WILL YOU HELP APPLEJACK?
The cost for both surgeries (cryptorchid castration and tumor removal on both eyes) is estimated at $2175. If you would like to help, donations can be made online at https://donkeyrescue.org/donate/pvdreast/ or via mail to PVDR, PO Box 216, Miles TX 76861 (write Applejack in the memo area).
He is the cutest little non-donkey and is such a good boy. At only four years old he has a great chance at living a long, full life with your help.
