Five Steps to Success
Ty Murray was a Professional Cowboy from the 1980โs to the early 2000โs.
Ty was a Nine-time World Champion Bull rider, and one of the founders or the Professional Bull Riders Association. PBR.
I seen an interview where he was asked if there was a secret to his success.
He said yes, he had a five step system that he relayed on to win that never let him down.
Feel, timing, balance, forward and effort.
When I heard this I realized how these five steps would also serve Reiners in their quest to win.
1. Feel- a rider can have all the instruction in the World on how to ride/train/show a reiner but if they donโt have โfeelโ everything will continue to be a mystery.
If I ask a rider, did you โfeelโ that? And they answer (or demonstrate) no, then more advanced training is pointless.
To โfeelโ where each body part is, at any given moment is absolutely essential to advance in your riding in a positive way.
2. Timing- without proper timing, stopping, spinning or changing leads will never be consistent. And the horse will not be relaxed or enjoyable. Maneuvers will be rough and undependable.
3. Balance- if a rider is flopping around unable to sit quietly in the middle of the horse, movement will suffer. Especially when high speed is added. And maneuvers will not be credit earning and penalties will occur.
4. Forward- all reining maneuvers even small slow circles require forward motion to stay smooth and correct.
5. Effort- And finally, dreams will never be realized, success will never become consistent, without effort.
To be great, one โmustโ put in the effort to practice, practice practice even when we donโt feel like it.
And showing a reining pattern is boring if a run has mediocre โeffortโto be special !
