Seriously does anybody know a small engine repair person that could come to Jacksonville and fix three riding lawnmowers?

Thought/tip for today.

How many of us like to think that we are comforting our dog(s) when we are leaving by saying things like "okay, buddy, I am going to go to (fill in the blank) and I'll be back soon/in an hour/later, etc., be good. I love you."?

The truth is, you are not talking to a human who can understand that an hour means that the short hand on the clock goes around one full time to the next number or the far left number on the digital clock goes up one number.

What that kind of "goodbye" actually does is "mark" the act of your leaving. They don't know what "an hour" or "soon" or "after work" means in context with how long that actually is from the time their human goes away and when they come back. In fact, they don't even understand that means you are coming back at all.

That being said, a lot of dogs are perfectly fine being on their own and do not stress about it as they feel confident that their human will be back and all is well.

However, some are absolutely not fine with being left alone, either due to isolation distress or true separation anxiety. So, when we mark the event of our leaving every time, they quickly learn that means we are going away and it starts the stress process for your pet.

Dogs associate everything that happens with whatever happens next, including words and phrases we use consistently right before the same event occurs right after.

SO, STOP IT! lol You are accidently causing your dog emotional distress. Certainly, you are not doing it on purpose because you would never do that. You love your dog(s)! You are trying to make them feel better. But, again, they are not four legged fuzzy humans. They are animals and they are not born speaking human or understanding human concepts.

There are so many ways to help your pet be calm and happy when you have to be away. We can help.

If you have a dog who is experiencing stress from being left alone and your pup needs help, please contact us at [email protected] :)

Our Story

At See Spot Sit Dog Training, our mission is to: Teach humans how to effectively communicate with their dogs. Reduce the rate of returned dogs to shelters and rescues. To educate and train rescue volunteers and shelter personnel in our community regarding how to evaluate and assess dogs for proper placement the first time. See Spot Sit also focuses on teaching the public how to bring home a shelter or rescue animal and successfully integrate it into their family. Our goal is to create homes where companion animals live happily together, in an environment that is safe and healthy for both pets and people. We also focus on educating families, with an emphasis on children, how to approach and meet an unfamiliar dog, and as well as properly interact with and respect their own family pet. Our ultimate goal is to create harmony between people and dogs. Charlotte Mallion’s vision was inspired by her involvement in animal rescue and rehome, which began over 12 years ago. She was on the board of Maumelle Friends of the Animals and currently serves on the board of directors for Sherwood Animal Shelter Helpers. She is an AKC certified Canine Good Citizen trainer and evaluator. She is experienced and educated in obedience training, advanced off-leash training, and behavior modification. Charlotte was mentored by Suzanne and Larry Olsen, of Palfwyn Dog Training School, who received all of their training and education in Germany and have well over 25 years of experience. Charlotte founded See Spot Sit, LLC to provide training and behavior modification to residents of Arkansas, after recognizing her passion for enriching the lives of animals and their owners, and her ability to bridge the communication gap between the two. She has been featured several times in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, as a local expert in dog training and behavior. She was also invited to be a guest speaker on a local radio station to address issues regarding animal behavior and public safety when dealing with animals. Charlotte was born and raised in Arkansas where she raised two children and had a successful career in the legal field. She enjoys spending time with her children, grandchildren and her own pets. She is also an avid participant in animal rescue and welfare. Charlotte has studied the works of professional trainers and behavorists, including, Karen Pryor, Dr. Ian Dunbar, Carol Lea Benjamin, Victoria Stillwell, Suzanne Clothier, Jack Volhard, Melissa Bartlett, Bill Moore, Grisha Stewart, M.A., CPDT-KA, who authored Behavior Adjustment Training "BAT for Fear, Frustration and Agression in Dogs," Patricia McConnell, PhD, and the Monks of New Skete, and many more, in order to continue her education and enable her to possess the knowledge and tools to help dogs and humans.
