As Brene Brown says, “clear is kind.” With dogs, the more clear we can make our communication, the better. The clicker does just that! It allows us, slow poke people, the ability to have better timing and a more consistent reward system. Interested in learning more about clicker training? Desensitizing your dog to noises WORKS!! Your dog doesn’t even have to be a puppy for the process to be effective. I will say, it is really important for puppies in their critical socialization phase to be slowly exposed to noises though. The more you can do while they’re still young, the better. Is your dog scared of thunder, fireworks or loud noises? For neighborhood walks I recommend at least a 10-15 foot leash to allow for exploring and sniffing. When walking past people/dogs/wildlife, you can always gather up the leash so your dog can’t go up to them. If you’re in a heavy traffic area, you can gather up the leash so they don’t get hit by a car. But as soon as you’re in a safe, open area again, let the leash out! #leash #leashtraining #leashyourdog #leashlaw #basicdog #dogtrainingbasics #longline #dragline #longleash #letyourdogsniff #letyourdogbeadog #letthemsniff #positivedogtraining #dogwalking #dogwalkinglife #arizonahiking #arizonadogtraining #azhiking High Tail Hikes
So why label rooms? Well it can be useful for a number of things but especially when you need your dog to stay somewhere safe, get out from under feet, “reset” situations, not guard spaces, not have to touch or get too close to a sensitive dog, etc. Have you labeled rooms or spaces in your house? What do you use it for?#dog #doglover #az #virtualdogtraining #prodogtrainer #positivereinforcement #snackleadernotpackleader #doodle #doodlelove #puppytrainingtips
Make sure not every adventure with your pup is go, go, go. Sometimes there needs to be time set aside for your dog to practice settling in public. Starting at a park like this is a perfect starting point if you eventually want your dog to be a cafe/patio dog. Mark and reward when your dog notices things, looks away from things and relaxes even further. Does your dog struggle settling in public? Comment “settle” and I’ll DM you! #settle #settleinpublic #publicaccess #dogtraininginpublic #doodle Sundance Labradoodles #labradoodle #park #trainingatthepark #puppyintraining #puppy #azdog #phoenix #arizonadog
Working through excitement is HARD especially for the super social breeds like Goldens! But in order to help your dog through it, you have to create set-up scenarios. This exact set-up is not what I would recommend for all dogs, especially shy, fearful dogs. Gretchen’s momma is using string cheese to help maintain a sit in excitement. If you were to do that with a fearful dog, you’ll likely get fallout behaviors such as suspicion in the food, your dog feeling coerced, your dog feeling trapped, snapping, loss of trust in you as the guardian, etc...But for my overly excited, confident dogs, the magnet hand method with string cheese will likely help bridge the gap for your dog being able to EVENTUALLY sit for attention/petting. Interested in the nitty gritty details on how you can get to this point and beyond? Comment “sit please”!#excitedpuppy #excitedpup #jumping #jumpingdog #jumpingdogs #nojumping #rewardbasedtraining #positivereinforcement #azdogtraining #virtualdogtraining #goldenretrievermix #doormanners #soexcited
Buster is still a puppy and we are starting to see the beginning signs of reactivity. So to help mitigate that as much as possible, we’re bulking up the positive associations with things that he notices. THE TRIGGERS- people, dogs, cars THE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT- “Good boy!” (could also be “yes!” or click) THE TREAT- cheeseThis protocol helps to: -interrupt fixations (hard stares)-prevent reactions (barking/lunging)-create different/better associations with things-encourage movement to alleviate built up tension-give momentum to continue walkingThis protocol can be applied in dogs that aren’t reactive too!! Maybe your dog is just too excited seeing people or dogs? Maybe your dog is scared of loud noises? The use is unlimited.Need help? Not sure? What would your dog do? Comment below! My dog doesn’t instantly run away because I’ve trained him without the leash. I mean the leash is on, but it’s not USED. It’s there for emergency back up only (and it’s the law). Need help getting your dog to WANT to stay near you rather than HAVE to? Think of the leash as your emergency back up. Your dog should not be staying with you just because it’s on. Outside of your home, the leash should be held for safety reasons, but when you’re initially training at home with minimal distractions, have your dog drag it! This forces you to have better communication skills and higher reinforcement history rather than relying on the leash. If dragging it is not an option, put it on the tip of your pinky finger or drape it over your arm. Do you need help with loose leash walking? **Not recommended for most dogs.** I am a professional dog trainer and we've rehearsed these skills a LOT. I used my best judgement when we approached the rabbit, before I allowed my dog to reach it. I assessed that he would not eat it based on the fact that most of it was fur and the rest of it was chewed up pretty thoroughly. I also know my dog's history with dead animals is to mostly sniff, tear out fur and play with the carcass rather than inhale it. Since we hike often and encounter situations like this, I opted to use it as a training opportunity. If you need help with your dog's resource guarding, send me a DM so we can discuss a plan of action for your dog! #resourceguarding #guarddog #respurceguardingprevention #hikingwithdogs #hikingdog #adventuredog #practicemakesprogress #goldenretrievers #arizonalife #rabbit #carcass #gross #positivereinforcement
