Addie’s Musings
Heeee’ssss baaacckk! You may have noticed that I haven’t said anything about the cute red head, Lawrence, yet this season. Well, he has been taking it easy recovering from an epic hoof abscess that required a series of special shoes this spring. His late start to the season finally came this past Saturday. He and my girl went to Fair Hill in Maryland for the Northeast Team Challenge. I am glad that I got to stay home because it was crazy HOT and this big bo**ie is already hot enough 🤣
They rode the 50 miler and used more water and electrolytes for one ride then even I require all season. Lawrence typically hates water touching him and thinks it is acid on his skin – even when it falls directly from the sky. But this weekend, he learned to love water and at one point didn’t want to leave the cool creek water. The placed first, got Best Condition and High Vet Score. I think that is a pretty good start to the season.
What does the rest of the season hold? More 100s? More epic rides memories? You bet ya!

Addie’s Musings
As you may or may not know, the endurance season is already underway here in the Northeast. These humans get started in March before it is even nice outside. This ole girl likes the cold though, so I am all in! I made the season debut again this year (suck it Lawrence!). We did the 50 miler at Rabbit Run in New Jersey a day before my St Patrick’s Day birthday in March. It was a special ride not only because it was my birthday weekend but also because we mentored a young Arabian dude on his first 50. He did great and we tied for second place! I don’t know if he could have done it without chasing my big bodacious b***y down the trail the whole ride but…what is a girl to do. There are no pictures of our epic ride but just know that we did it with style and with an outfit that in no way matched (that is kind of our signature now).

You may recall my new tall, dark and handsome paddock mate, Ames. He made his re-debut into endurance early in April. You see, Ames is a full Arabian and endurance should be in his blood, but, it has been a long road to get him physically and mentally prepped for successful competition. He had two failed competitive attempts last year and my girl was almost ready to throw in the towel – well, she says she was ready to give up, but I know her better than that to believe that load of horse c___ …well you know what I mean. So, off Ames went to Fair Hill for Foxcatcher. They did the 25 miler. Ames says he is ready for a longer distance but I told him to chill, my girl knows best. Again, I was right. They pulled off a first place finish (with a 20 min margin I might add) and earned Best Condition. Ames proved himself as a real endurance horse that day and I couldn’t be more proud! I did play a part in his training after all, so I have claimed one of his two prize coolers.

I am not sure what is next for the three of us – it seems like my girl always keeps us in the dark. Oh, speaking of the dark, we have been night riding more. Is that part of the plan? The next planned ride (which was Lawrence’s turn) was cancelled thanks to wildfires, so who knows what is next! Maybe one of us will go south or west to a ride!?!?! Stay tuned. Ole Addie will give you the low down.

This is really neat: An entire facility dedicated to studying senior horse health. This is a great source of information for horse owners as their horse herd ages.

In addition to conducting research to help improve horse health, Dr. Adams and her team aim to help horse owners better understand study results and how they make a real difference in their own equids' lives.
