Balanced Paws, Happy Ohana LLC Behavior Modification and Training for Dogs and Cats The foundation of any relationship with an animal is based on mutual trust and respect.

Animals will not respect you if they cannot trust you. The lack of a strong foundation is the underlying problem to majority of all behavior problems. The greatest attribute about working with animals is that they live in the present, and trust with an animal can always be re-earned. There are many training methods out there. Mami strongly believes that there is no method that works for all. How c

omfortable and confident a pet's owner feels about applying a certain method is critical and is frequently overlooked. Mami's mission is for pet owners to gain awareness of their own emotions and how they directly affect their pet's behavior. The ultimate goal is for owners to gain the confidence they need to become the best tool and biggest influence in modifying their pet's unwanted behavior.

Happy Independence Day! 🇺🇸 🎇

Holidays like today prompt fireworks, which can be a stressful time for your furbabies. Keep them safe by offering a quiet, secure place in or around the house where they feel most calm. Take them on a longer walk than usual to drain extra energy.

🧘‍♀️ Remember to keep calm yourself to ease your dog’s anxiety and/or fear.

Purrsday Training Tip 🐱

It is best not to encourage cats onto counters and tables, especially around the kitchen. It can be dangerous while cooking. They can burn their paws on the stove, knock over hot pans, etc. Offer more vertical space in an area that is safer for your cat. For instance a place near the kitchen, so they can oversee the kitchen but not be directly in it while in use.

It’s exciting getting a new dog or puppy, but always consult with all members of the household before adopting. Dogs are a highly social, pack oriented species. This means everyone in the household will have an influence on their behavior.

Pick a dog that best matches your lifestyle and energy. A high energy dog will not do well in a low energy household. 🐶

It is vital that your dog does not have any food aggression, especially when it comes to having children around. When the time is taken to build mutual trust and respect, this is the outcome. Before my baby was born, my dogs were being taught to respect anything baby related, even if it was something as simple as a burp cloth. Since my baby was born, I have included her in every daily activity my dogs do. Everything is calm and controlled during mealtime as it should be. 🍖

Training Tip Tuesday 🐾

💔 The loss of a pet can be one of the most heartbreaking experiences a person goes through. Use as much time as needed to grieve, mourn, and celebrate the life and memories you made with your furbaby.
When you are emotionally ready, then welcome another dog into your life.
Why?
A new dog coming into a household that is still mourning, is a heavy energy to go into. Dogs will sometimes develop unwanted behaviors due to this. If you have multiple dogs, try to keep things routine. Dogs do sense loss as well, but it’s the pack leader’s job to keep moving forward.

This was Hercules. My very first Great Dane. It has been years since he passed. He was truly my soul mate. 🌈 It will always be until we meet again.💚

When you take food or toys away from your dog, there should never be any growling, nipping, lunging, and/or other resource guarding behaviors. This is especially important if they are around young children.

‼️ Please do not attempt this exercise if you are unsure how your dog will react. Get assistance from a professional to ensure this type of training is done safely and correctly.

Playing is a critical part of bonding with your furbaby. It builds on trust. Just remember to still keep it a structured activity. You decide when to start and end playtime. There shouldn’t be any resource guarding with toys. No growling, nipping, or jumping (on you).

Happy World Oceans Day! 🌊

Enjoying the beach with your furbaby can be rewarding and fun. However, (especially with the summer heat) please be mindful when and how long you stay at the beach. Heat stroke can quickly escalate to an emergency situation that can lead to death. Take frequent breaks in the shade and bring fresh drinking water.
Dogs can also get sunburned (especially on their nose and ears), so look into using doggy sunscreen. Frequent intense sun exposure can also hurt their eyes. If your dog tolerates having shades on, use that to your advantage!😎 The best time for a beach trip is in the morning or later in the evening.💙
