Pawsitive Pawz Dog Training I am a groomer in the Salem area! I do every breed, standard haircuts to glam cuts, including color!

Ariel Harrison, A Salem local and dog owner, has been actively involved in Dog Training as a profession for five years. She currently owns two American Eskimo dogs named Kilo and Rikku, and a German Shepherd mix named Clair. She offers a wide variety of Positive Reinforcement based training, including but not limited too.

-Basic Obedience
-Advanced/Rally Obedience
-Canine Good Citizen work
-Soft

Agility
-Rescue/Behavioral Modification/Rehabilitation work for Aggressive, Fear, or Anxiety reactive dogs. All Classes are private, family friendly, can be held in-home or in a public location, and open are for any breed of dog. (Pits, Shepherds,Wolfdogs, and other "scary breeds" are MORE than welcome!)

What is Positive Reinforcement Training? Positive Reinforcement Training is a constantly evolving style of training that relies heavily on the scientific understating of how dogs behave and learn. Positive Reinforcement, or "PR" training, is designed to help pets and parents set up rules and boundaries without having to resort to the use of physical force or intimidation. Dogs and their owners learn how to create quick, easy behaviors, such as self calming, focus, attention and boundary respect, that can be memorized and used thought their whole life without excessive force or reminders. There is no limit to what you and your dog can learn using this method!

Hello everyone!
It's been a long while, but I hope everyone has been doing good! I've been reminiscing working with everyone and been wondering how everyone's pups have been doing as well!

What's new with me? While I am still in hiatus with dog training, I've stepped into the dog world again by being a bather for a great groomer in salem!

If your beloved pups need a good bath or a new summer do', give Laura from Laura's Laundramutt a call to see if her team of groomers will be a good match for your family!

Pawsitive Pawz is unaffiliated with Laura's Laundramutt, I am raving about the wonderful women that work hard and love what they do as they're pampering your pups! If your pups just need a bath, request me, Ariel (even though I go by Renie *re-knee* now, they know me as my original name at the moment.), and I will bathe your pups! Open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 am to 4 PM! Phone: 503-967-6116

Enjoy the sunshine the rest of the week! Happy Pawsitive Training!

**I cannot offer specials through Laura's company, all prices are Laura's laundramutt grooming prices.**

Hello and Good morning everyone! It has been quite a while since I've last posted. A lot has gone on behind the scenes that has caused a halt on my ability to be able to help clients and their pups become amazing teams.

So it is with a heavy heart to say Pawsitive Pawz Dog Training will undergo a hiatus for an undetermined amount of time.
This means that I am not taking on any clients at this time.

However, if you need help and you have no idea where to begin, I am still open for contact and I still offer the free 1 hour evaluation to at least help guide families in the right direction with their pups!

You all have made my experience in this industry one to remember and I had enjoyed every second of it!

If anyone has any questions or concerns, please feel free to drop a message and I will answer and help in anyway that I can!

Happy Pawsitive Training!

MYTHBUSTING MONDAY: Myth - Positive training for reactivity is limited to "distracting" a dog with treats when another dog appears.

If you've tried distracting your dog with treats when he sees another dog (or bike, car, jogger, etc.), and he completely ignores the treat and you, here's why.

STRESS

When an animal (including humans) reaches a certain level of stress, an important change takes place in the brain, which starts the processes necessary for fight (aggression) or flight (avoidance), including the activation of the sympathetic nervous system. When that happens, pupils dilate, respiration increases, heart rate increases, and digestion shuts down.

Why? Because if you're being chased by a bear, your body doesn't need food in that moment, it needs to be fast and agile. Food can come later, but if you don't survive, the nutrients you get from food won't help you.

When a threat passes, the sympathetic nervous system is disengaged, and we return to a normal state of "rest and digest." Hopefully, where you are right now.

What does this have to do with your dog passing your neighbor and her Corgi?

Because whether or not your dog's reactivity is rooted in anxiety, fear, frustration, or excitement, the same process is taking place. It doesn't matter that her dog poses no real threat to your dog. What matters is that your dog's stress level has reached the point that digestion has shut down.

One other important thing happens at this point. Your dog is now focused on only the things necessary for survival (remember, this is about the dog's perception, not ours). Sort of like trying to focus on a crossword puzzle while a bee is buzzing around your face. So, trying to do any training at this moment is pointless.

Unfortunately, this is the point that most people attempt to "distract the dog" with food. But, as you now understand, it's too late.

This is why trainers talk so much about staying "under threshold." The threshold is the point at which the dog tips over into that fight or flight mode.

Where that threshold is depends on your dog, but changes depending on the proximity and intensity of the trigger, as well as duration of exposure.

For example, let's go back to the bee. If the bee is busy on a nearby dandelion, it might not bother you while you're gardening, but a bee buzzing around your face might be more concerning. If that bee is only there for a second before flying off, you might not move, but if the bee persists for 30 seconds or more, you might get up to avoid it. Multiply that to 100 bees buzzing around your face, and you're probably switching into serious fight/flight mode. See how slight changes can make a big difference in your stress levels?

While every dog is different, they all have a point where they can focus and learn and take treats, and a point they can't. If we want to maximize learning and behavior change, we keep them under threshold, gradually increasing the proximity, intensity, and duration they can tolerate.

Behavior modification for reactivity using non-aversive methods is not about distracting a dog with food. It is about using food to change associations to the things that trigger reactivity and to reinforce previously taught behaviors. To do this, we need to work at a distance, level of intensity, and duration that keeps the dog below threshold.

It's not that positive training doesn't work. Your dog just needs you to make a few changes so that it can work for them.

11/07/2014

There's a humid heat wave coming this week (As if there wasn't already a heat wave currently!) that's going to get over 100 next week! Please please please be mindful of where your animal is (And children!) I know I've already done a service announcement, but with the impending humid heat wave, I thought I would do another one!

In addition to car safety (in service announcement in separate post), Be careful when taking your dog a walk! The concrete and asphalt can severely damage their little paws! Do the 7 second test with the back of your hand against the pavement and if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them. Be also mindful that what you might find ok, the dog might not, everyone is different, so watch for signs!

_______

http://pets.webmd.com/dogs/heat-stroke-dehydration-dogs

"Heat stroke begins with heavy panting and difficulty breathing. The tongue and mucous membranes appear bright red. The saliva is thick and tenacious, and the dog often vomits. The re**al temperature rises to 104° to 110°F (40° to 43.3°C). The dog becomes progressively unsteady and passes bloody diarrhea. As shock sets in, the lips and mucous membranes turn gray. Collapse, seizures, coma, and death rapidly ensue.

Treatment: Emergency measures to cool the dog must begin at once. Move the dog out of the source of heat, preferably into an air-conditioned building. Take his re**al temperature every 10 minutes. Mild cases may be resolved by moving the dog into a cool environment.

If the re**al temperature is above 104°F, begin rapid cooling by spraying the dog with a garden hose or immersing him in a tub of cool water (not ice water) for up to two minutes. Alternatively, place the wet dog in front of an electric fan. Cool packs applied to the groin area may be helpful, as well as wiping his paws off with cool water. Monitor his re**al temperature and continue the cooling process until the re**al temperature falls below 103°F (39°C). At this point, stop the cooling process and dry the dog. Further cooling may induce hypothermia and shock.

Following an episode of heat stroke, take your dog to a veterinarian as soon as possible. Heat stroke can be associated with laryngeal edema. This seriously worsens the breathing problem and may require an emergency tracheostomy. An injection of cortisone before the onset of respiratory distress may prevent this problem.

Other consequences of hyperthermia include kidney failure, spontaneous bleeding, irregular heartbeat, and seizures. These complications can occur hours or days later.

Dehydration

Dehydration occurs when a dog loses body fluids faster than he can replace them. Dehydration usually involves the loss of both water and electrolytes. In dogs, the most common causes of dehydration are severe vomiting and diarrhea. Dehydration can also be caused by inadequate fluid intake, often associated with fever and severe illness. A rapid loss of fluids also occurs with heat stroke.

A prominent sign of dehydration is loss of skin elasticity. When the skin along the back is pulled up, it should spring back into place. In a dehydrated animal, the skin stays up in a ridge.

Another sign of dehydration is dryness of the mouth. The gums, which should be wet and glistening, become dry and tacky. The saliva is thick and tenacious. In an advanced case, the eyes are sunken and the dog exhibits signs of shock, including collapse.

Treatment: A dog who is visibly dehydrated should receive immediate veterinary attention, including intravenous fluids, to replace fluids and prevent further loss.

For mild dehydration, if the dog is not vomiting you can give him an electrolyte solution by bottle or syringe into the cheek pouch. Balanced electrolyte solutions for treating dehydration in children, such as Ringer’s lactate with 5 percent dextrose in water or Pedialyte solution, are available at drugstores and are also suitable for dogs. Gatorade is another short-term substitute to help replace fluids. Administer the solution at a rate of 2 to 4 ml per pound (1 to 2 ml per kilo) of body weight per hour, depending on the severity of the dehydration (or as directed by your veterinarian)."

_______

There is plenty more information out there on how to treat, but be sure to prevent it. Please purchase a cooling collar (a collar that can be purchased at Nature's Pet Salem that you put around their neck after freezing it to keep them cool) and keep plenty of cool water on you at all times, especially if you're going to be doing anything outdoors. Purchase a small children's pool from Walmart and fill it for your pup outside in the shade or purchase a sprinkler if your pup enjoys that sort of thing!

Keep safe and have fun!

Couple of safety announcements from Pawsitive Pawz!

The Heat! Today there is a heat wave warning in effect in Salem and surrounding areas in Oregon in effect last I heard until 9 pm tonight. Please, if you're going out, leave your pets at home where it's cool and not with you in the car unless someone will be with you to leave the car running while you run errands! Pets and Children have only mere minutes, before irreversible damage happens in a very hot car! Be careful for the whole summer with this so that all our kiddos, furry or not, stay safe and have fun!

Fireworks! For all those fearful pups, it has already begun early because of people who set them off early! Please, check out these natural calming remedies to help aid their way through this week!

(You can find this product at Petco as well)

And for those really scared kiddos, I recommend going to the vet to make sure their week goes by smoothly.

Make sure to have your fences secure, people close the doors when they go through them and are mindful of your dogs/animals. This is the worst time of year for lost dogs and kitties and Marion County Dog Shelter has already been intaking a high volume of dogs since the sales of fireworks.

Find a room that they can chill in, play some calming music, or if you have it, put on DOGTV for them, with their calming aids and give them toys and chews such as kongs, bullysticks and chicken broth ice blocks in bowls for them to keep themselves busy and cool!

Happy 4th and be safe everyone! :)
