Kim Cipolla has been working with dogs and their humans for over 18 years, and has extensive experience with all sizes, ages and temperaments. Her focus is on developing the relationship between the dog and their handler through the use of clear, consistent cues and body language. With an emphasis on rewarding “good” behaviors and ignoring and redirecting undesirable behaviors, she will show you h

ow to communicate with your dog effectively and thoughtfully to achieve your goals. Kim specializes in addressing behavior problems common among dogs adopted from shelters and rescue organizations. She teaches basic skills and provides solutions to typical unwanted behaviors such as leash reaction towards other dogs, housebreaking, inappropriate greetings, and unreliable recall. She is insured and an AKC-approved evaluator for Canine Good Citizenship titles.

June is national microchipping month!

A microchip can be quickly and easily implanted in your pet to provide a permanent means of identification - giving you peace of mind and helping to keep your pet safe! A dog or cat with a microchip is much more likely to be reunited with their family.

Once your pet has a microchip, be sure to register it and keep your contact information up to date in the database.

With spring around the corner, it's a good time to check your yard for common flowers and plants that are dangerous to pets. Inspect your yard for plants such as autumn crocus, azalea plants, tulips, hyacinths and daffodils to help keep pets safe. Other plants to keep away from pets include lilies, lily of the valley, chrysanthemum, cyclamen and rhododendron.
Keep a close eye on your dog in parks and trails as well, and if you suspect your pet has ingested any toxic plants, call your veterinarian immediately. Do not wait to see if symptoms appear because in some cases of poisoning, by the time symptoms appear, it's too late.

March is Pet Poison Awareness Month!

This is a good time to prevent potential accidents by:

Securing human medications, household chemicals and fertilizers out of the reach of curious paws

Ensuring rodenticides are in protected areas and/or inside bait stations

Reminding all humans in your household that some common foods such as chocolate, grapes, raisins & sugar-free gum are dangerous to our pets

Checking your house and yard for common flowers and plants that are dangerous to pets

If you think your pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous substance, call ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center: (888) 426-4435

Their Poison Control experts are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year

Are you interested in traveling with your dog and taking him to public places? Then consider participating in the Urban Canine Good Citizen (CGCU) class starting this week. Teach your dog to be a companion for all people, to be a respected member of the community, to behave at home, in public & around other dogs! The class includes five weeks of preparation plus an evaluation leading to the Urban Canine Good Citizen title if your dog successfully completes the ten required skills. Each session of this 6-week class lasts one hour.

Daily Doggy Enrichment: Take a Bow Welcome to a new week! Have you been practicing new skills with your dog and showing off what they have learned to family and friends (at a safe distance, of course)? Well every good performance should end with a BOW! Start with your dog facing you in a standing position. Bring your hand with a treat in front of their nose and slowly lower it down to the floor, slightly under your dog's chest. Notice the path of my hand makes a diagonal line to the floor. (If I had brought it straight down my dog would have thought I was signally her to lie down.) Quickly bring your hand back up to lead your dog into a standing position. Once your dog understands that bow means "chest down, butt up" they can practice holding it longer. #dailydogenrichment #rainydayactivities #mydogisbored

Daily Doggy Enrichment: Learn to crawl Remember the backyard agility jump made from two boxes and a broom handle? The same items can be used to teach your dog to crawl! Notice that I am moving the treat slowly to draw my dog under the pole, and holding the pole steady with my opposite hand (I don't want him to be startled if his back bumps it!). #dailydogenrichment #rainydayactivities #mydogisbored

Backyard agility - make your own Weave Poles! Place any stakes or posts that you have in the ground about 3 feet apart. Start by walking through the posts with your dog in a serpentine pattern. As they get the hang of it, you can walk on one side while your dog does the weaving. With each pass, keep your guiding hand closer to the posts so your dog walks in a straighter line. #dailydogenrichment #mydogisbored #getoutside

Introducing Daily Doggy Enrichment - Simple, fun activities for you and your dog while you're home. MUFFIN TIN PUZZLE: For this activity, all you need is a muffin tin, tennis balls (or any rubber ball) and some treats or kibble. Place treats in some or all of the compartments, cover with tennis balls and let your dog figure out the puzzle! Enjoy!
