Hello from me and my girls! One of my favorite activities is hiking with my dogs (and in this case I was also blessed to have my daughter with me).

When I’m out hiking, I am less concerned about loose leash/no pull walking as I know the dogs are excited about their environment. My dogs personally hike better and remain engaged with me when allowed some freedom (only in remote areas where there is no one present and only because they are trained) but this is not the case with most dogs. This is a popular spot and it is snake season (we saw a striped racer in the grass on the side of the trail) so the girls are absolutely on leash. This means I get more than the average amount of pulling. My point is… most dogs pull on the leash, even well trained ones, when excited about… well, nature and all its glory (smells, birds, squirrels oh my!). Don’t allow your dogs to yank your arm out of the socket of course and if you ask for a Heel or focus, your dogs should be able to give it. But I believe in letting dogs enjoy themselves too… so yes, a certain amount of pulling may occur.

The walk is about both of you. Give some freedom(ie a little pulling), let them smell and dream of ground squirrels racing into their mouths instead of their underground dens, but have control. Practice that focus work periodically. Be respectful of other people and their dogs. But most importantly, give your dog life experiences. Your dog will thank you for it (and you’ll feel good too). Go on now… go enjoy nature!

Working on improving my photography and looking to practice on more pups.

If anyone would like to let me use their dog as a model, I will be at Corriganville tomorrow morning and will offer a few time slots (listed below). I prefer dogs that can hold a decent stay as my style is more portrait than action (at least for now).

Time slots available:

Great job to everyone who worked on Touch and other targeting drills with their pups at our Sunday Skills Clinic. We are taking the next couple of Sundays off but will resume our group classes in a few weeks.

A great group of dogs at our Skills Clinic on Sunday. We worked on Down, Down Stay and just overall good dog behavior around other dogs (which can be very hard!). We ended class with some fun agility.
Come join our class sometime. Our calendar is at https://3dogtraining.com/class-calendar.

Absolutely amazing class this morning! Nine dogs of various sizes and ages… from a young great Pyranees to a 12 year old one eyed mixed breed. Some struggle with reactivity, some are just excited pups. Some owners just trying to improve their communication skills.

After working on Heeling for a bit, everyone took a turn walking their dog around the group.
I was blown away at how well everyone did. No big emotions. No heavy pulling. No reactivity.
Kudos to a great group of owners. 👏

Apparently Saturday was Climb a Rock Day! These pups were happy to proof some of their behaviors on a new surface. Change it up. Have fun! Training shouldn’t always take place in the same spot under an expected setting conditions. Challenge your pups while making training interesting and fun too. (And you get cute pics too.)

Adorable Cane Corso Chakra started off as a very enthusiastic treat taker. You know the kind… jumping, pawing, attempting to sn**ch. Just a “gimme me!” approach like most youngsters. But this super smart cutie learned quickly that good things come to those that wait… so she sat nicely (and even learned to down) and waited for me to bring the food to her. Patience is learned. And the benefits are endless.

Looking forward to working with this girl even more.

April 7th Sunday skills clinic: Heeling

Teach your dog to walk by your side and at your pace. With this skill, your dog can learn to bypass distractions while maintaining focus and control. While loose leash walking teaches your dog not pull, heeling is truly mental work and a skill that has many benefits... especially for our reactive rovers.

After class, we will go on a short pack walk.

Here’s just a little sampling of some pups trying to be their best selves thanks to their dedicated humans.

Training should be an enjoyable part of both the dog’s day as well as the owner’s.

This might have been the moment I fell in love with my client’s dog, Kira. Rescued from the shelter at the beginning of this year, she has proved to be a great family dog, but they struggle with her reactivity to large dogs while on leash.

So glad we got a chance to work on it today because I did not feel that this dog was aggressive but possibly just overstimulated. Owner and dog did great and I have no doubt this dog will continue to prove that she’s amazing.
