Skill clinic: Down
A great group of dogs at our Skills Clinic on Sunday. We worked on Down, Down Stay and just overall good dog behavior around other dogs (which can be very hard!). We ended class with some fun agility.
Come join our class sometime. Our calendar is at https://3dogtraining.com/class-calendar.
Here’s some transparency. This is my dog, Eloise. She is a 1 year old lab. If I ask her to heel (or not even use the verbal signal, but just start changing direction and walking with purpose), she will walk on my left side with slack in the leash and focus on me. How often do I ask her to do this on one of our walks? Sometimes not at all. Sometimes once or twice. The majority of the walk, I let her sniff and enjoy her environment. Do I allow her to drag me down the sidewalk for long periods of time? No. Does she pull on the leash or walk in a way that creates some tension from time to time? Yep. You can see it at the beginning part of this video.
Interestingly, when I drop the leash, she immediately focuses on me. She pulls less when the leash is not being held. Why? Tension (tight leashes) causes pulling. More restraint = more pulling. The dog wants to pull away from the tension, not slow down! Keep this in mind for those of you that like to hold your leashes tight and talk about how great it is that your dog stays close to you. Your dog is not making the choice to stay close to you. The dog is being restrained.
If you dropped your leash, what would your dog do? I only did this because no one was around and I knew I had control. My dog stays near me for a variety of reasons… yes, I do have treats (that she loves), but I have also invested time in our relationship. I’m a good time. We train. We play. We cuddle. She goes in the car with me. We have a relationship. Want a well trained dog? Invest time in the relationship!! Sometimes you have to be more interesting than the environment and that takes effort… not just on the walk, but at home. Everything you do with your dog matters.
Want control on your walk? Want a dog that doesn’t run off when you drop the leash? Be willing to spend the time to invest in your relationship.

Puppy Socialization Class #2 … these puppies had a blast!
Ivan is looking for a home with a family that is ready to have some fun! He is a great dog, so smart and friendly!
New slant board arrived and decided to try @eloise_blacklab on it. I’d previously worked with her on backing up onto a low platform, starting with about 1 1/2 inches and increasing to about 3-4 inches. That platform was flat so I wasn’t sure how she’d feel about a slanted board but she went right to work.
Confidence building, body awareness, conditioning, focus and more. “Training” doesn’t just have to involve sit-stays and heeling. Those things are important too but I find these other exercises are good for the body, the mind and honestly, your relationship. My dogs LOVE this stuff. Find what your dog loves and you will strengthen your relationship by integrating that passion into your training. And yeah, maybe your dog LOVES to eat your shoes… but let’s promote another activity that you both like. 🤣

Look at Luke and his owner doing a great job practicing a focused walk. Luke just got his last set of shots but they were already getting him accustomed to the leash and short training drills.
Everyone is so anxious to set out on that first walk but before you think about distance, think about focus. Increase distance and distraction as your puppy learns to engage with you.

Teaching a dog to sit on a “Place Box.” We post many pictures of our day camp dogs sitting on a Place Box but this is a great demonstration that it doesn’t come easy to every dog.
