Service Dogs of Distinction A non-profit organization dedicated to service dog training for veterans. All our services for qualifying veterans are free of charge.
(18)

Our organization was started by dog trainers who want to provide quality dogs and training for veterans with PTSD. We realize that many service dog providers are producing dogs inadequately trained and often selling them for enormous sums to veterans and others needing service dog assistance. Our goal is to understand the need of the veteran and to find and then train a dog that can best meet his/

her needs. We utilize dogs from shelters and from individuals who are looking to rehome young dogs with the demeanor and characteristics we look for. We then work with the veteran/dog teams until they are sufficiently trained and able to pass any public access test. We also offer reasonably priced training services to civilians who have a need of a well trained dog or service animal. We intend to remain a small, hands on organization that stays focused on the client and their needs. Our service area is Arkansas, southern Missouri and eastern Oklahoma.

Willow has met her vet! After several training sessions, a play date and an overnight we felt like this pair was a good fit. Best of luck Willow!! Btw, her vet actually went and bought a new vehicle he thought would be comfortable for her ❤️❤️❤️

People often ask us, “what’s the best breed of dog for service work?” We answer, “we choose by the heart and soul of the dog, not what he looks like.” ❤️

Max and his veteran demonstrate the progression of teaching “about face”. This positioning allows the dog to watch the veteran’s back. PTSD creates anxiety in public that has a lot to do with what is going on behind the veteran, that he/she can’t see. If someone approaches, the service dog will wag his tail as a signal to the veteran.

This is one of Max’s three demonstrable behaviors that helps the veteran cope with his disability. This service team is just about to graduate!!

Valentine, was a throwaway pet. She was actually delivered to a veterinarian for euthanasia. Why? She had no training, was too energetic and had become inconvenient.

In this video, that throwaway dog learns to gently interrupt her veteran from a nightmare. This behavior will help her veteran awaken from bad dreams much sooner and comfort him as soon as he’s awake. Knowing his dog will be there for him, helps lessen the veteran’s angst about sleep.

Konda goes camping with his veteran. The trip included lots of boat time, fishing and sleeping under the stars.

Try to imagine how Konda helps the veteran to regain some of the things he loves to do. The goal of a service dog is give a veteran his/her life back.

Our program can only continue with support from the community ❤️

Daphne has been hesitant about swimming. With a vest and encouragement from her veteran, she actually got her feet off the bottom!

We had a day at the farm! Nothing better for a dog’s emotional and physical well being, than a run with the pack. We added the pond in for those who might like to explore swimming !

Max is working on the Public Access Test. Here’s a restaurant setting, where food is “accidentally” dropped. Max’s job is to ignore the food. He does a great job!!

Once the bond is strong, we teach the dog to understand his job is to assist his veteran/leader. In this video from home cameras, Marti is playing with a toy in the room adjacent to her veteran. Her vet stands up and freezes, falling into a flashback trance. Somehow, Marti senses his traumatic moment and runs to interrupt his mindset. She is successful and he snaps out of it.

This video came from the veterans’ wife, who was at work at the time.

Please help us continue our important work for veterans, with a donation to our website.

Our Story

Our organization was started by dog trainers who want to provide quality dogs and training for veterans with PTSD. We currently train from two locations, Fayetteville and Rose Bud, AR. All our services for qualifying veterans are free of charge. We realize that many service dog providers are producing dogs inadequately trained and often selling them for enormous sums to veterans and others needing service dog assistance. Our goal is to understand the need of the veteran and to find and then train a dog that can best meet his/her needs. We utilize dogs from shelters and from individuals who are looking to rehome young dogs with the demeanor and characteristics we look for. We then work with the veteran/dog teams until they are sufficiently trained and able to pass any public access test. Our organization is nearing 50 service dog teams successfully graduated. We also offer reasonably priced training services to civilians who have a need of a well trained dog or service animal. We intend to remain a small, hands on organization that stays focused on the client and their needs. Our service area is Arkansas, southern Missouri and eastern Oklahoma.
