During coyote mating season, which in Michigan is from January to March, coyotes can be more aggressive and pose a danger to dogs:
Unspayed female dogs: Unspayed female dogs in heat attract male coyotes.
Unneutered male dogs: Unneutered male dogs can be lured away by the scent of a female coyote in her ovulation cycle.
Coyotes can scale fences: Even a fenced yard isn't a guarantee of safety for a pet left alone outside.
Here are some tips to keep your pets safe during coyote mating season:
Supervise your pets: Always supervise your pets when they're outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk.
Don't leave food out: Don't leave your pets' food or water bowls outside.
Keep your yard clean: Keep your yard clean of debris, and keep your grass cut and trees and shrubs cut back.
Remove food sources: Remove food sources that attract coyotes, such as birdseed, trash, compost, and woodpiles.
Keep cats indoors: Keep all cats indoors.
Spay or neuter your pets: Make sure your pets are spayed or neutered and up to date on shots.
