Update from AZ state veterinarian. We do have positive cases in AZ related to the TX event. They are shedding EHV 1 but they are currently asymptomatic.
Many of you have called with questions about what you should be doing. This is a complicated virus that doesn't behave logically. If your horses live at home alone and people wash hands and wear clean clothes you have very little worry and risk. If you're scheduled to travel to a competition soon we suggest you consider the specifics of the situation thoroughly before doing so.
The AAEP will be hosting a webinar for horse owners on Tuesday to help answer many of your questions about the disease and discuss things you can do to help the current situation. We suggest all of you watch it.

Regarding the current EHV/EHM outbreak:

1. There is a lot of misinformation on social media. We recommend following EDCC. They also have a great app you can get to follow along easily on your phone

2. Horses are ALWAYS at risk for acquiring EHV/EHM any time they are gathered in large numbers, stabled together and put under stress.

3. Vaccinating may not protect against infection with EHM but it may decrease shedding and help prevent against further spread.

4. STOP PANICKING AND USE COMMON SENSE. If you have two horses that live alone and your friend has horses that live alone then it's not likely you're going to pass the current Texas strain to each other. But if you're thinking about going to Vegas right now, where lots of potentially exposed horses are going to live inside with each other for over a week, under stress, with poor ventilation, maybe you should think twice about your decision.

5. If you are planning any type of travel with your equines in the near future please do your research or ask your vet as every state has different travel restrictions and requirements based on their current status

Freedom Run Equine is proud to be a founding member of the Desert Equine Education Group. Yesterday we had a great time interacting with the community at the second annual Horse Healthcare Seminar. This event is held yearly in September at the Pima County Fairgrounds. Southern Arizona veterinarians come together for a day of education and interaction. If you missed it this year be sure to get it on your calendar for next year. You definitely don't want to miss this opportunity to have so many horse doctors available for your questions in the same place at the same time!

Freedom Run Equine Veterinary Service, PLLC is one of the proud founders of the Desert Equine Education Group, working to provide educational opportunities to horse owners and veterinary students.
This past weekend we had a great time hosting students from a number of veterinary schools in the western United States. We collaborated with Jackpot Veterinary Center and Adobe Veterinary Hospital to provide hands-on wetlab opportunities to help students be prepared for equine practice upon graduation.
A big thank you to Steady Strides Riding Center for providing your facility and your horses so that Freedom Run could offer students opportunities to work up lamenesses, x-ray pathology, and learn the skills of intraarticular injections.
We are passionate about helping the future of equine veterinary medicine and we thank everyone that helps to make these educational opportunities possible and look forward to doing more in the future.

Get ready for some cold weather! Make sure to give your horses a wet mash with electrolytes to keep their water intake up during the colder nights next week. As always, a fresh, clean water source keeps horses drinking. An extra flake of hay can also keep them warm if you haven't broken out the blankets yet.
