Four of our personal 2023s got their first rides on Friday with the help of our good friend and former assistant trainer, Kaity Barrero.
Kaity came to us several years ago with a decent knowledge base and a passion for colt starting. She then worked for us for a couple of years, so she and Jason make an excellent team.
She is obviously handy and has the added bonus of being shorter and lighter than Jason. Jason rides a help horse to control the situation. This way, he can watch each horse, get to know them even better, and assess them for a training plan, etc.
Jason has been properly preparing our prospects for this ride over the last 6 weeks. The goal was to keep it a very mellow day. Mission accomplished. No ride lasted longer than 11 minutes. This is our favorite way to start them: low-key, low-stress, low drama.
I have all 4 rides in their entirety available for interested buyers. I will have these prospects' marketing profiles completed around the 1st of the year.

SPOOK N BOON, taking good care of his rider's older shoulder.
He knew immediately that Jason knew his throw was going to be short - his shoulder isn't as young as it once was.
This is the difference between a trained and cow savvy horse vs a horse that is just patterned to do a job. He stayed with the cow and gave Jason the ability to get the fish. The fish saved a -5-point penalty per judge and the need for a second loop.
They took home a check for over $800 in the NRCHA SBF Cowboy Class. It would have been $0 if he had to throw a second loop.
This horse has an uncanny ability to mentally stay with both his rider and the cow.

Use a queen when you colt start
#coltstarting is in full effect here at PQH. Jason has 35 years and thousands of starts under his belt.
Duke (a young stallion who has had little interaction with mares) had lots of questions about what was going on today, obviously, but in the end, he made real progress when he started using his brain, which was the goal. This will help immensely as we move forward.
Greta has grown into the Queen of the barn. This 2018 mare has earnings in NRCHA, AQHA VRH, RHB Cutting, Working Ranch Horse, Breakaway Roping & Heeling, and was CJ’s mount for the winning team for the ExCC this year. She is a phenomenal ranch horse and, well, a pretty darn decent help horse for colt starting.
She is also the first horse raised entirely on BUCKEYE Nutrition at Perry Quarter Horses. We started feeding it in March 2017, when her dam was pregnant with her. We think it shows. Don’t you?

Getting a little relaxing Cold Salt Water Spa time in for Cats Like Butter and Boon Docs Bailey before they rein today at the NRCHA Futurity in Fort Worth.
Both fillies were bred, raised, and trained in our program and are by CATS ROYAL BOON. Their dams are mares that were born and raised on our ranch.
