THE HUMAN ELEMENT

I see it all the time. The horse is flighty. There's no control of the feet. Hes scared of you. What do we do? We desensitize.

But folks AND trainers get this wrong all the time. What do they do? They bring out the plastic bag, the stick and string, the tarp, flag, hell add a leaf blower or one of those goofy blow up figures that you see at a car dealership. It never ends..

Have you ever thought that maybe the scary object is you? The human element. With somewhat unpredictable energy and speaks in odd tones? I firmly believe a good portion of that scary stuff is you.

And maybe its not when you approach your horse in the pen but when you are in his personal space. Have you ever wondered why your horse is possibly nervous about saddling? Sure maybe the first time but have you ever thought why he's completely content checking out a saddle on the fence without you there?

Horses feel energy. Whether its confidence or anxiety. I learned the importance of this when I competed in c**t starting challenges. When you only have 2hrs each day to start a c**t, time is absolutely precious. I saw many trainers send their horses around in circles right when the clock started. My tactic was to catch that horse as fast as I can and get myself right up in his business to show him that I was an energy to be trusted. I didnt win competitions because I can sit rank stuff, Im smarter at the mental game.

One time my competition was in the middle of Colorado, no indoor, and the wind picked up to a solid +20mph winds. I remember working my horse like in the picture below. I looked up and every single trainer had a tarp, catching the wind, smacking their horse with no timing and creating unnecessary energy in every direction. It was a circus..

When you pull out your c**t, think about the human element. Yes, I use tarps and flags daily. But don't forget yourself when preparing the first ride. If hes comfortable, hes ready to swing a leg over.

Whether you have a champion dressage horse, an older arthritic dog or anything in between structural integration can help get them back to moving freely and feeling better. Quite often this work has positive behavior changes as well. The healing powers of touch are quite powerful and I’d like to share this wonderful healing therapy with you and your animals.
