udy, a purebred pointer, was the mascot of several ships in the Pacific, and was captured by the Japanese in 1942 and taken to a prison camp. There she met Aircraftsman Frank Williams, who shared his small portion of rice with her.

Judy raised morale in the POW camp, and also barked when poisonous snakes, crocodiles or even tigers approached the prisoners. When the prisoners were shipped back to Singapore, she was smuggled out in a rice sack, never whimpering or betraying her presence to the guards.

The next day, that ship was torpedoed. Williams pushed Judy out of a porthole in an attempt to save her life, even though there was a 15-foot drop to the sea. He made his own escape from the ship, but was then recaptured and sent to a new POW camp.

He didn't know if Judy had survived, but soon he began hearing stories about a dog helping drowning men reach pieces of debris after the shipwreck. And when Williams arrived at the new camp, he said: "I couldn’t believe my eyes! As I walked through the gate, a scraggly dog hit me square between the shoulders and knocked me over. I’d never been so glad to see the old girl!"

They spent a year together at that camp in Sumatra. "Judy saved my life in so many ways," said Williams. "But the greatest of all was giving me a reason to live. All I had to do was look into those weary, bloodshot eyes and ask myself: 'What would happen to her if I died?' I had to keep going."

Once hostilities ceased, Judy was then smuggled aboard a troopship heading back to Liverpool. In England, she was awarded the Dickin Medal (the "Victoria Cross" for animals) in May 1946. Her citation reads: "For magnificent courage and endurance in Japanese prison camps, which helped to maintain morale among her fellow prisoners, and also for saving many lives through her intelligence and watchfulness".

At the same time, Frank Williams was awarded the PDSA's White Cross of St. Giles for his devotion to Judy. Frank and Judy spent a year after the war visiting the relatives of English POWs who had not survived, and Frank said that Judy "always provided a comforting presence to the families."

When Judy finally died at the age of 13, Frank spent two months building a granite and marble memorial in her memory, which included a plaque describing her life story.

There are 12 dogs here at the farm -- some are medical cases like Sadie & Etta, and Ernie the new chi with chronic skin and ear issues. Some are seniors like Summer and again Ernie & Etta. Some are rehabbers like Ely, and some are higher energy like Dory, Zippy, and Bailey. We have an Amazon Wish List with items these guys need -- if you can help, your generous donation (like all Ewenity donations) is tax-deductible and most appreciated! In gratitude, Jill and the Dogs

UPDATE 12/23: So God will, Miso has found his forever loving home! Thank you so much for sharing & caring! It’s often what can make a real difference in a dog’s life! 🙏🏼

———————————————————————

Hello there and thank you so much for stopping to read my post! It means a lot, because you may be able to help?! I'm reaching out to the world, because I am looking for my forever home.

My name is Miso (aka "Me-so-snuggly"). I am a handsome 7-year-old male Blue Heeler, German Pointer & Catahoula mix and all I want for Christmas, is a loving home!

I'm a true sweetheart with a lot of charisma. Despite my hunting/working dog genes, I'm super low maintenance. I am the most content, when I can snuggle with my people, be curled up on the couch or to sunbathe. I 'm also not a barker, btw. Unless I see something that I want to alert you of. I'm totally chill when left alone in the house or if I'm asked to be in a crate. I'm not destructive or anxious and I’m housebroken. While my past has led to me no longer liking other dogs (and I'll explain in a minute), when it comes to humans of all sizes, I don’t have a single aggressive or mean bone in my body.

So, why is an amazing dog like me not already snagged up, you ask? Well, unfortunately I've been put in bad situations that led to some traumatic experiences. Those left me distrusting other dogs. I was ganged up on more than once by a few dogs in the shelter I was at and got beat up pretty badly. Thankfully, the amazing people at Ewenity Farms Herding Dog Haven stepped in and got me out of there!

Not only did Ewenity Farms rescue me from that shelter, but they went the extra mile and found a trainer for me. I'm currently staying with her here in Jacksonville. Kat, my trainer, is helping me re-learn to navigate the dog-world and not be reactive when I see another dog. Walks are enjoyable again and I'm really good at listening when called or told to do something.

With that said, it's only been a short while since I've been in an environment where I get the proper support and my distrust in dogs runs deep. That's why I really don't feel comfortable being in a home with other dogs. So, the only request I have for my forever home, is that it be one with NO other dogs (I don't know how I feel about cats, so let's stay clear of those too - just to be safe.).

Do you think we could be a match or know someone? If not, that’s okay, but it would help, if you could PLEASE SHARE this post!

Any questions? You can reply to this post, send a DM or reach out to Jill at Ewenity Farms Rescue directly. Here's their website where you can also find all the information about the process: https://www.ewenityfarmsbch.com/

Our dog kennels are completely full, and we need your help. Today we have 266 dogs and only 264 kennels.

We urgently need adopters, fosters, and rescues. Our greatest need is for medium/large dogs. Each day we are taking in more animals than the number that are leaving.

If you can help, please visit the shelter in person. We are open until 7pm tonight. Tomorrow and Friday we will be open 12:00-7:00.

Hey there. It’s me, Fury again. You may have thought by now I would have had my forever home but nope…I’m still hanging here at the rescue. I’m not sure what it takes to actually get a home because it seems to be evading me.

I’m an energetic girl who loves to play and LOVES people. I play ball, go for walks, LOVE to learn new tricks and play with my other doggie friends (I like the big ones like me).

It seems a lot of the dogs here come in and go out pretty quickly but that hasn’t been the case for me. I’m STILL waiting and waiting and waiting. I can’t believe there isn’t a family out there who wants someone to love like me.

I’m young, smart, active, beautiful and loving. Can you tell me what else it takes to find a home so I don’t have to live in a shelter? I’d sure like to know. I’ll be waiting for any suggestions. ~ Fury
