When we posted Lily’s puppies, the response was overwhelming—over 20 applications in less than 12 hours! All seven puppies found their forever homes within 24 hours. Yet Burt, along with some of our other amazing dogs, is still waiting in his kennel, wondering why no one has chosen him. Burt’s was adopted from us as a VERY adorable puppy. Burt struggled to get along with the resident dog in his previous home, and while it was a tough decision, it was ultimately best for him to find a new family that fits his needs. Now just shy of 140 pounds and almost 2 years old, Burt is an impressive, lovable goofball with a heart as big as his size. He’s an alpha male, which doesn’t mean he can’t get along with other dogs, but he would likely thrive as the only dog in his next home. Burt has so much going for him! He’s fully housebroken, doesn’t need a crate, walks well on a leash, and knows basic commands. He adores being with his people and would love a home that understands and appreciates his larger-than-life personality. Burt doesn’t ask for much—just a loving home that will continue to support his socialization and training, and give him the life he deserves. If you’re looking for a giant but gentle companion to fill your heart and home, Burt is ready to be your best friend. Troy is looking for the simple things in life. A cozy bed, good food, snuggles, and lots of love. Born under a collapsed home with his nine siblings, Troy didn’t experience human contact for the first six weeks of his life. Despite what he’s been through, Troy has shown incredible resilience. Now, at just three months old, this spirited sweetheart is ready to bring joy to a family who’s up for the puppy adventure. Come meet Troy and let him steal your heart! Puppies are naturally resilient, but time is essential for healing from early traumas. These little black beauties, born beneath the ruins of a collapsed house in rural Tennessee, spent their first six weeks in complete darkness, untouched by human hands. Imagine the shock of being suddenly scooped up into a new world—a safe one, but unfamiliar and overwhelming. Though they’ve made incredible progress, a few of our ‘T pups’ are still timid and will sometimes retreat to feel secure. At just 12 weeks old, they have a journey ahead, but in the right, patient hands, they’ll blossom. We’re looking for dog-savvy families willing to invest in their socialization and training, to guide them forward without fear of falling back. These pups would thrive in a home with older kids, as the energy and excitement of younger children may be a bit much for them right now. And a calm, confident fur-sibling would be the perfect mentor to help them discover the joy of companionship and trust. Could you be the family to help these little ones find their way to a beautiful life? As painful as it is to lose your dog, a dog should never have to outlive their owner. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out in #adoptable Rebel’s favor when his owner passed so he’s hoping to find a new family to begin again with. This spunky punk is full of life and energy. He is an active guy with the most unusual look. We’re sensing some cattle dog, and from observing his temperament, this young man will need lots of exercise and a job to do in order to flourish. At 10-months-old we think Rebel is about fully grown at 27 lbs. He’d be the perfect companion for a young couple that loves to live by the seat of their pants—always on the lookout to explore and embark on new adventures. His favorite game is fetch and he is not picky about what ball you throw. He can, however, be a bit selective when it comes to certain male dogs. Reactivity is normal and absolutely something that can be worked on with a trainer, structure and boundaries. If you’re looking for lots of fun and lots of laughter in your next furry companion, Rebel is a winning choice. Come meet this little man by submitting an application for him on our website sghrescue.org (📍Dedham, MA) #adopt #adoptdontshop #optoutside #adventuredog #adoptashelterdog #rescuedismyfavoritebreed #savealife
Meet Oakley! Found with another dog tied to a fence with an old pair of jumper cables, Oakley’s family abandoned him after they were evicted. All that they left him with was his name and a note saying they loved him. But leaving a dog that’s skin and bones and riddled with scars doesn’t sound like love. Still this gentle 4-6-year-old, 60 lb soul shines bright, eager to offer you his paw and heartwarming affection. Oakley shows some signs of abuse, but has a submissive nature and is ready to feel safe. He loves his people, enjoys his walks but more than anything he could cuddle up next to you for pets all day long if you let him. He received so much love and care in his foster home and we hope we can place him in a home that will do the same. He’s done beautifully with cats and other dogs and would love another dog around his age in the home to play and snuggle with. He has lived with young children (2 & 4) and absolutely adored them as well. Oakley is truly our golden boy, ready for the life he deserves. Could you be the one to end Oakley’s journey and welcome him into his forever home? Another day, another chance for Riley’s perfect match to find him. Hang in there, Riley. Your family is out there. It’s tough to see such a gentle soul go unnoticed, despite his incredible progress and loyal heart. Riley has been working so hard, mastering leash walking and showing us his glorious personality every day. With that beaming face and steady, loving spirit, he’s more than deserving of a home that sees his worth. We’ll keep sharing his story, hoping for the day when someone finally says, “That’s the one.” Please, help Riley get the chance he deserves by sharing his story or, even better, by meeting this incredible boy for yourself by applying for him on our website at sghrescue.org (📍Dedham, MA) #adopt #gooddog #adoptdontshop #adoptashelterdog #rescuedog #savealife
Let’s talk about food aggression—also known as resource guarding—a survival instinct often found in rescue dogs like Russell. Coming from a hoarding situation where food was scarce, Russell learned to guard his meals, still carrying the instinct that he may not get another. It is a common behavior we see in many of our the guests that pass through SGH and understandably so considering the previous neglect they’ve endured. It is also highly trainable and something we’ve seen many adopters work through. For Russell, we’ve learned that in order for him to be successful, it would be best for him to be the only dog in the household at this time. He is friendly with other dogs outside of mealtime, and has been known to play hard and snuggle even harder. Russell has never shown aggression toward people over food, and with the help of a trainer, he can keep moving forward on this journey. Though he previously lived with kids, we believe a quiet, adult-only home is best, where he can fully relax, build confidence and feel secure. With regular walks, mental stimulation, and a lot of love, Russell will flourish in the right environment. All dogs (and people) are works in progress, and Russell is no exception. He’s a playful, affectionate boy who just needs a family to help him continue to grow in the right direction. We are always happy to provide support and recommendations to set everyone up for success. Could you be the one to help this sweet boy thrive?
