REMINDER: Please do not exercise your pets in the heat of the day. When the temperature outside is 75 degrees, the asphalt temperature can be 125 degrees. Test the asphalt temperature by placing the back of your hand to the ground for 7 seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it is too hot for your dog's paws.

Study: Metal bowls have MORE dangerous bacteria⚠️ than plastic! 🤯

Pet food and water bowls can transmit bacteria, according to research, and while 67% of owners use metal bowls, only about 1/3 of people wash the bowl after a meal, and some only dry wipe, which is how the bacteria party gets started 🤢. And that slippery film in the water bowl after 24 hours? That’s a brew of bacteria🦠 that can be transferred from your dog to you and your family.

The amount of moisture in the food also matters. Wet food (compared to dry) was associated with higher bacteria - and higher humidity levels are likely to create perfect conditions for bacterial growth, especially after coming in contact with dog saliva left in the bowl.

In our new book, The Forever Dog LIFE, we lay out the pro’s and con’s of different types of bowls. Here’s a glimpse of what you need to know:

Plastic🥣: Chemicals in plastic absorb through the skin and inhibit the synthesis of melanin, which can cause Plastic Dish Nasal Dermatitis that leaves your pet’s nose & lips, pink and irritated.

Ceramic:🫖 Hartpury scientists found the most harmful bacterial species (salmonella, E.coli and MRSA) were most frequently found in ceramic bowls because of people continuing to use them after fine cracks in the glaze become visible.

Stainless steel🥄: cheaper quality bowls have been involved in recalls due to heavy metal contamination. Be sure to buy high-quality bowls (18/8 or 304 steel) from a trusted source.

Glass🥛: Durable, kitchen-friendly glass bowls made from 100% borosilicate glass (Pyrex) make great food and water bowls on the floor.

🧼No matter which type of bowl you use, the best thing you can do to protect you and your dog’s health is to wash your bowl after every meal with hot water and soap. In addition, at least once a week, run your bowls through the hot cycle in your dishwasher. You can also coat the bowl with hydrogen peroxide, wait five minutes, then wipe with a clean sponge and rinse.

For more info on bowls, Comment and we’ll message you the link to The Forever Dog LIFE book where in part one titled The Forever Kitchen and the section labelled “Food & Water Bowls", we cover how to choose the best chemical-free bowls🌱 that won’t leach contaminants⚠️ over time.

Your pet’s bedding is freshly washed, a ready nest full of softness, warmth….and formaldehyde?🙀

If you use dryer sheets or other fabric softeners, that “fresh scent” left behind is evidence of volatile organic compounds, or VOCs.

Formaldehyde is one of the respiratory irritant VOCs common in fabric softeners, along with acetaldehyde and acetone. But there are many more - researchers found 25 distinct VOCs emitted from dryer vents when these products were used😱 Other common offenders include:

☠️pentane - causes skin and GI irritation

☠️ethyl acetate - on the EPA’s hazardous waste list, causing anemia, changes in white blood cells, and damage to the liver and kidneys

☠️benzyl acetate - absorbed through the skin and damages the pancreas

☠️alpha-terpineol - causes headaches and nervous system disorders

The good news is that your pet can have clean, soft bedding 🛌 without risk of coughing, itchy rashes, organ dysfunction and more! In our new book Forever Dog LIFE, we show you how to make reusable non-toxic dryer sheets that are good for you, your pets, and the environment, plus many more DIY solutions for home and body! 🙌

Visit https://donnadevlindesigns.com/ Complete Designer Sets For Your Pampered Pets featuring Tracheal collapse, obstructive upper airway disease,

Tracheal collapse, collapsing trachea Overview: Small breed dogs are particularly susceptible to a condition called tracheal collapse. The tracheal rings, which are made of cartilage, can become weak and fail to keep the trachea open during breathing. When the trachea collapses, air is no longer able to move through the respiratory tract.

Depending upon the Tracheal collapse stage of respiration in which the collapse occurs, air may become trapped within the lungs or blocked from entering them. A collapse is more likely to occur when the animal is moving air within the airways at a faster rate than normal, or if there is added pressure around the outside of the trachea.

Excitement, exercise, obesity, and allergies are factors that may incite tracheal collapse.

1. Normal Tracheal Ring
2. Collapsed Tracheal Ring
3. Collapsed Trachea.

RETRACTABLE LEASHES: THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY

Many of us have utilized a retractable leash at one time or another. The “freedom” for our canine to wander appeals to our desire to allow our dogs a sense of freedom and an ability to roam a bit.

This well-intentioned decision, while providing our pets with an opportunity to move a bit more freely, comes with a handful of negative potential outcomes.

Retractable leashes, some of which may extend to over 20 feet, allow dogs to significantly and quickly distance themselves from their human companion and to find themselves in dangerous situations. Many canines have darted onto busy roadways, rushed at other canines and unsuspecting pedestrians and have been attacked by wildlife.

In order to function properly and to retract into a small housing, these leashes are constructed from thinner cord materials known to snap under sudden and intense pressure. While the lower section of the retractable leash may appear to be of significant thickness, the portion that retracts into the handle needs to be significantly thinner. In addition to allowing one’s dog to run loose, there have been injuries reported to dog-walkers as a result of the recoil of the broken leash. There have been a number of law suits filed as a byproduct of some of these injuries.

Should an aggressive dog approach, it is often difficult to retract the leash and bring your dog to your side. A dog on a standard six-foot nylon leash is significantly easier to control under emergency circumstances.

The ability to extend the retractable leash to its maximum length allows a canine to generate a significant amount of speed. Many dogs have suffered neck and spinal injuries when the retractable leash reaches its maximum length and abruptly stops extending.

Unlike a standard leash which is easier to grip, there have been reports of dropped retractable leash handles frightening timid dogs who believe that they are being “chased” by the plastic leash handle. While seemingly foolish to us, there have been reports of dogs being struck by vehicles and/or running away due to their lack of understanding of their being “pursued” by a leash handle racing towards them.

Additionally, many retractable leashes malfunction due to a worn/damaged wheel, lock or brake. Should this occur under emergency circumstances, one would struggle to control their pet.

Lastly, retractable leashes do not allow us to train our canine to walk at our side. The ability to roam in any and all directions teaches and encourages our dogs to wander from our side.

Please consider utilizing a standard six-foot leash when walking your dog.
