Any. Other. Year.

Today we honor Sham, born 52 years ago on April 9, 1970.

Any thoroughbred born in 1970 didn’t stand a chance against Big Red. Had Sham been born any other year, he easily could have been a Triple Crown winner. He was exceptional, he was brilliant, he was superior to all but one on the track in 1973. He was a horse of a lifetime.

He was bred at Claiborne Farm by Bull Hancock and was a dark, handsome, big, leggy horse. He stood 16.2hh.

Laffit Pincay (jockey of Sham and Affirmed), was once quoted as saying, “People ask me what is the best horse I ever rode. I always say Affirmed. All he ever did was win for me, but if he ran in that race (Derby with Secretariat and Sham), he would’ve finished third.”

Unfortunately, several weeks after Belmont, Sham shattered his cannon bone. While he made a recovery, his connections opted to retire him.

Major Races

•Santa Catalina Stakes (1973)
•Santa Anita Derby (1973) (he shares the record for the fastest time ever recorded)
•Kentucky Derby 2nd (1973) •Preakness Stakes 2nd (1973)

Honors

•Sham Stakes at Santa Anita Park

Most of his stallion career was spent at Spendthrift Farm, with later years at Walmac Farm. He had a successful stud career, yet not spectacular. He sired several stakes winners.

Sham passed away at the age of 23 on April 3, 1993 of a heart attack. His necropsy showed his heart was double in size......
second only to Secretariat’s. 💔

Any. Other. Year.

Sham (Pretense x Sequoia, by Princequillo), today we honor you.

This industry is so tough.

You see champagne and a dollop of caviar, we see rice bran oil and an exact 2 pounds of sweet feed.

You see private jets and Ferrari's, we see Chevy trucks and John Deer gators cruising from barn to barn.

You see Arrogate, and Chrome, and Pharoah, we see every other yearling full of optimism. Streaking across fields of Bluegrass - some of which might not even get a gate card.

You see the Derby, and the Pegasus, and the Classic, we see Christmas morning, New Years Eve, and every other day in between.

You see the pretty foal photos, we see the emergency runs to the clinic. The dystocias and the abortions. The foals who need help to stand and nurse every two hours.

And you see the drugs and the broken bones and say we don't care. We see different drugs and the set bones, the stall rest and the ice packs. The bandage changes and the hand grazing. Strolls up the lane ways, and first time turn outs.

You say we don't care, and yet we know that we care. Sometimes a little too much.

So this is to the ones who do. The ones who care. Who never stop caring. Who love the horses that they might not ever even own. You are the true kings of this sport.

(a status I wrote a few years ago that felt worthy of sharing again alongside a photo of a foal that we never gave up on and have rehabbed through numerous severe injuries and illnesses)

Kentucky Horse Park has reported that 1994 Kentucky Derby winner, GO FOR GIN died yesterday, March 8 of heart failure at the age of 31. He was the oldest living Kentucky Derby winner. Many condolences to all who cared for him at the park. He was more than just a friend to everyone there; he was their family. Visiting with him last year, I could see absolutely how much he was adored. Another great added to God’s stable in the sky. Rest easy Buddy.
