Thank you from the happy animals at Rikki’s Refuge!
My friend Dale S Eggers has died unexpected, leaving behind a large feline family. Looking for rescue options, and a kind individual to help care for them and coordinate in or near Bainbridge, New York. About 35 miles NE of Binghampton. WHO do you know or can YOU help?
Prayers for Dale and her family, many felines, and two adult daughters. She was one of those kind people this planet really needed to keep and should have been here with us many more years.

Bella and Moon enjoying the spring grass at the refuge. It's Caturday! Kick up your heels and play!
At Rikki's Refuge we love ALL animals !!!
Leaf. It’s what’s for dinner.
Did you know banana slugs can have up to 27,000 teeth? The molar, the merrier, hey! Can they bite? Sure. Mostly from the bitey end. OMG! Which end!?! We’ve been over this. Don’t worry. A slug rarely bites humans. But if you annoy it, pick it up aggressively, or just deserve it, then maybe. What? You were expecting slugs and kisses?
The tiny teeth are actually called denticles. Cute. They are attached in multiple rows on a ribbon-like tongue called a radula. The denticles are curved one way, so when the slug feeds, the radula acts more like a file, rasping away at leaves and other woodsy treats like rotting mushrooms and animal s**t, making them essential decomposers in forest ecology.
Fun fact: Banana slugs are often bright yellow (giving rise to the banana nomenclature) although they may also be greenish, brown, tan, or white.

Brought to you by the SHEEP at Rikki’s Refuge !!!
There is one day of the year we absolutely hate. Can YOU guess what day that is? It’s not always the same day each year. I think that’s cus the hoomans want to surprise us and trick us. That’s not very nice, is it?
I think Doug might be up to something, he’s acting a bit strange this morning. What could it be?
Yup, I was right. Doug gave us extra special nummys and just like the sheep we are, we lined up and followed him into the barn. Then he shut the gates behind us. WHY?
HAIRCUT DAY!!! NO NO NO we hate this day !!! Not fair. The hooman who comes and takes our hair away says we have to stay in the barn over night. That’s cus he says we have to be dry when he comes in the morning to steal our hair. We’re going to worry about this all night, and we’re going to kick the walls and the gate and try to break out. Our hooman, Doug will keep checking up on us all night and talking to us trying to keep us clam and not letting us hurt ourselves or each other. I guess that’s nice. But it’d be nicer if he let us out. Don’t YOU think?
Just about the time the sun comes up, here comes that wool stealing hooman. And one by one, he grabs us, makes us sit on our butts, and cuts off all our wool. At least it doesn’t take but about 3 minutes each.
And then we are naked !!!
WOW .... that kind of feels good !!!! Have YOU ever worn your long underwear months and months and never taken it off? Even on days it gets warm, or even hot, in the spring? You’d feel good to finally take it off before summer I bet!!! So do we !!!
AND it rained today !! Don’t YOU feel good when you can stand in the rain and wash off all the grime that’s gotten down in your long un**es all year?
How do YOU like my summer hair cut?
I do have one problem. Well maybe two. Can you help me? Do you have green trading papers? We don’t have any, and it’s really hard to get a job when you have four hooves and say bahhhhhh. Doug says we now gotta PAY for our haircuts. It’s really not much for each one of us. Less than $9 green papers each. With 37 of us we have to find $325 and we have to find it QUICK before that wool stealing man goes to the bank to cash the check. YIKES, I’ll be in big trouble if he gets there before YOU help me get some green papers !!!!!
And .... if you have an extra bit of green papers .... maybe you could donate $20 green papers so we can pay for our hair cuts AND get some delicious sweet feed !!! $11 green papers will buy us each of us enough for the week in the summer, cus when the grass grows we have lots of that too !!!
Thank you so much for helping me and my followers .....
Love, Sherman C. Artiodactyla

On the Twelfth Day of Christmas, look what came to Rikki’s, twelve temperamental turkeys, well ... not all of them. But boys usually are. They’re very territorial and ready to fight anybody who comes on their land. Just like roosters. The turkeys will fly up in the air and kick you! A big guy can knock you right over. It’s that male aggression and protection of territory and females. The females are often friendly. But watch out if one of the guys are around! You pat one of his gals, or feed her something special, and he’ll come kicking and beating you with his wings !!! But their sound is just lovely !! Gobble Gobble Gobble !! Listen to our turkeys in the video here ! Rikki’s Refuge is supported ONLY by donations from kind individuals just like YOU. Please consider an end of year gift to help the animals at Rikki’s Refuge live in love and peace and always have enough to eat. Thank you. Rikki's Refuge (Life Unlimited of Virginia, Inc)
Rikki’s Refuge Animal Sanctuary is a no-kill life-care facility, which means we handle and care for animals other organizations can’t or won’t. Most of the animals we take in are considered "un-adoptable" and will receive love and care at Rikki's for the remainder of their lives. We specialize in feral cats, cats with FIV or Leukemia virus, elderly animals, differently-abled animals, animals with chronic health issues like diabetes, and farm animals from various situations to keep them from entering the production market, i.e. being slaughtered. We care for domestic and farm animals from 22 different species - ranging from dogs and cats to cows, pigs, emus, goats, turkeys, peacocks and everything in between! We are able to positively, responsibly & humanely assist humans AND animals through our multi species refuge for abused, abandoned & homeless animals; promoting speuter, TNR; assisting the elderly and/or low income enabling them to keep their pets; teaching humane education, tolerance & acceptance for the handicapped (physically and/or mentally) of animals & humans; providing safe haven to native wildlife; maintaining biological diversity of native flora & fauna.
Rikki’s Refuge is a 450 acre no-kill life-care all-species animal sanctuary for farm and domestic animals, with 350 acres preserved for native wildlife and flora/fauna.
