Rikki's Refuge Rikki's Refuge believes that everyone deserves life, regardless of physical, mental or emotional challenges!

Rikki's Refuge is a 450 acre no-kill life-care all-species animal sanctuary for farm and domestic animals, with 350 acres preserved for native wildlife and flora/fauna.

ATTENTION everybody --- today's VISIT WITH THE ANIMALS is CANCELLED !!! We are still too icy for it to be safe for you. We're really sorry and were hoping it would warm up and clear by now. I'm so sorry for the late notice. Gates will be closed today, you may leave donations there and we'll get them to the animals. The driveway in is too slippery in the shaded areas where it's solid ice, and the paths to walk about and see the animals are treacherous in places. We don't want you to fall ... or worse.

Ice ice ice. These sub freezing temps are a real time consuming mess to deal with. Not once a day. Many times a day. First we have Doug breaking up the ice in a trough that was emptied and filled with fresh water ONLY 3 hours ago !!! And that means it has to be done for drinking water in every outdoor area every few hours, day and night !!! SHORTS? Yup, Doug is wearing shorts. WHY? Cus when you're dealing with many watery tasks outdoor your pants will get wet and keep you colder than having bare legs !!! Next, ice slab 2 inches thick from a duck pool. You'd think nobody would want to swim in this weather. Even fresh water doesn't stay any temp I'd think about getting in for long !!! The cookie shaped slab of ice was dumped out of a duck pond. They only get dumped and refilled in the morning and a couple times during the day. It's ok to let them freeze overnight cus the birds go to sleep when the sun does.

Eleven years ago today ...... Colleen picked Riley up to drive her down to Rikki's Refuge. Why had Riley been deemed unadoptable? Riley is what we call a Psycho Kitty. She's very anxious about things, very untrusting till she's known you a LONG time. And easily frightened. Spook her, or touch her the wrong way, or fall for the "oh come on, pleaz rub my belly" and you're going to bleed .... a lot. Just the kind of kitty we love here at Rikki's Refuge !!! The kind of kitty who warms your heart so much when you earn her trust, when she let's you pat her and doesn't bite you, when you see her comfortably laying in the sun, not jumpy about what might be coming around the corner. Here she is, just after being picked up and getting ready for her ride to Rikki's Refuge, and eleven years later, lazing in the sun in her favorite window seat. Your donations make it possible for kitties like Riley to have a safe place for life, to be loved, even when she bites us !!! Thank you for helping us save lives.

Our Story

Rikki's Refuge (Life Unlimited of Virginia, Inc)

Rikki’s Refuge Animal Sanctuary is a no-kill life-care facility, which means we handle and care for animals other organizations can’t or won’t. Most of the animals we take in are considered "un-adoptable" and will receive love and care at Rikki's for the remainder of their lives. We specialize in feral cats, cats with FIV or Leukemia virus, elderly animals, differently-abled animals, animals with chronic health issues like diabetes, and farm animals from various situations to keep them from entering the production market, i.e. being slaughtered. We care for domestic and farm animals from 22 different species - ranging from dogs and cats to cows, pigs, emus, goats, turkeys, peacocks and everything in between! We are able to positively, responsibly & humanely assist humans AND animals through our multi species refuge for abused, abandoned & homeless animals; promoting speuter, TNR; assisting the elderly and/or low income enabling them to keep their pets; teaching humane education, tolerance & acceptance for the handicapped (physically and/or mentally) of animals & humans; providing safe haven to native wildlife; maintaining biological diversity of native flora & fauna.
