Food for Thought is a program of Animal Place, one of the oldest and largest sanctuaries for farmed animals in the United States. Located in Grass Valley, California, Animal Place is home to 400 rescued animals, a guest house, a residential internship program, and innovative advocacy initiatives. Since 1989, Animal Place has been a leader in the farmed animal protection movement through rescue, sa

nctuary, and advocacy. We launched Food for Thought to help other nonprofits adopt humane, sustainable, and healthy menu policies for their sponsored events. Food for Thought is a program of Animal Place designed to help organizations like yours adopt an animal-friendly menu policy for their sponsored events. The Food for Thought program works with other nonprofit organizations to align their menu with their mission. We work with nonprofits — animal shelters, wildlife conservation organizations, environmental groups, and social justice organizations — to adopt menu policies that reflect their commitment to making the world a better place for all — human and nonhuman. At Food for Thought, we strive to support and respect people of all gender identities, racial identities, nationalities, sexualities, abilities, ages, religions, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our team recognizes that inclusiveness is an ongoing process of educating ourselves.

Why should you care about turkeys this holiday season?

These birds are truly an underrated treasure with glorious iridescent feathers that shine in the sun, flight speeds of up to fifty miles per hour, and complex social groups of up to 200 individuals. But the life of a farmed turkey is a sad shadow of the lives their wild counterparts lead.

Broad-breasted turkeys are large birds, bred to grow fast at an unnatural pace. Because of this, it is impossible for them to mate naturally. Instead, birds are artificially inseminated.

The fertilized eggs the hen lays are collected and placed in artificial incubators. Turkeys never hear their mother’s voice. Instead of their mother’s unique call, a turkey chick hatches into a world of chaos. Loud machinery and the peeps of other chicks greet them.

Turkeys headed to industrial farms will be de-beaked, in which a portion of their nerve- and blood-rich beak is cut or lasered off. Some farms, particularly those raising male turkeys, will sever the first digit of the toes to prevent bruising caused by fighting.

Thousands of chicks are confined into windowless sheds, where they remain for months until they reach slaughter weight. After birds reach slaughter weight, between 4-6 months of age, they are violently rounded up and crammed into open-aired transport crates.

Turkeys deserve better than this - join us in making a positive difference by leaving turkeys off of your plate at holidays and organizational events.

What is Food for Thought?

Animal Place’s Food for Thought program is designed to help animal and environmental organizations formalize healthy, sustainable, and compassionate menu policies for sponsored events.

Food choices have a powerful impact on furthering compassion toward other animals, human wellbeing, and the health of the planet. For organizations committed to encouraging kindness toward animals and environmental stewardship, a simple but significant way to make a difference is to offer exclusively plant-based foods at events.

Adopting an animal- and earth-friendly menu policies at the board level allows organizations to do the greatest good by aligning their menu with their mission.
