With the wave of extreme heat in the coming days/weeks, please be sure to keep your pups safe!

Dogs can't cool down as effectively as we can, making them more susceptible to heat-related issues.

1️⃣WATCH THE HUMIDITY

• "High humidity amplifies the negative impact of high temperature on your pet—and in combination, these factors magnify the danger zone," says Dr. Barbara Hodges, DVM, MBA, of the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association.

2️⃣LIMIT EXERCISE ON HOT DAYS 🥵

• limit exercise to early morning or evening hours

• be especially careful with pets with white-colored ears, who are more susceptible to skin cancer, and short-nosed pets, who typically have difficulty breathing.

•Asphalt gets very hot and can burn your pet's paws, so walk your dog on the grass if possible.

•Always carry water with you to keep your dog from dehydrating.

3️⃣PROVIDE AMPLE SHADE & WATER

• In heat waves, add ice to water when possible or freeze water bowls to have ready.

• A doghouse does not provide relief from heat—in fact, it makes it worse.

4️⃣KNOW THE SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE

•heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, excessive thirst, lethargy, fever, dizziness, lack of coordination, profuse salivation, vomiting, a deep red or purple tongue, seizure and unconsciousness.

•very old, very young, overweight, not conditioned to prolonged exercise, or have heart or respiratory disease are more susceptible.

•boxers, pugs, shih tzus and other dogs (and cats) with short muzzles will have a much harder time breathing in extreme heat.

Be Safe & Stay Cool ! 🥶

It is with great sadness that we share the news about Tigger. His original family moved to Fla, and he needed to be rehomed. He was lucky and found the best home ever. He passed away suddenly today. He had a long, beautiful 7-year life with his new family. He was 2 when he was rehomed. He would have been 9 in June. His family is heartbroken, but they take comfort in being the family that was his forever home. Pets for Patients wishes all dogs could find the same loving home that Tigger had. Thank you to his family that gave him a second home that was “the Best Home Ever.” Rest in Peace, beautiful Tigger.

Treble has been with us for 73 long days.
You may wonder why such a cute dog would take so long to be adopted.
Treble was rescued from an Amish breeder. We found out he had heartworm disease and started treatment immediately.
But that wasn't Treble's only obstacle he had to overcome.
Because Treble was in a small cage outside and only used for breeding. He never learned how to be a dog. Luckily, one of our fosters took him in, got him through the start of his heartworm treatment and showered him with love and affection. Slowly but surely, Treble came back to life and started playing and running like a normal dog. Every sudden noise didn't scare him anymore. He started enjoying car rides and cuddling with his fosters.
When he was ready, he was adopted to someone that Treble knows well. He is romping with the resident dog and fitting right in with the family. Treble still has a couple of more heartworm treatments to go but we are confident that his new family help him through it!
Have a great life Treble!

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Nick Winters. Special does not adequately describe Nick. It was an honor to know him. He named his Pets for Patient’s shelter dog, Miracle. We know Miracle will miss Nick greatly, but she will remain in the loving home of Nick’s Aunt.

Social psychologist Bruce Headey conducted a survey of Australian dog owners and found that they take fewer trips to the doctor, sleep better than non-dog owners and are less likely to be on heart medications.

James Serpell from University of Pennsylvania conducted a study in the U.K. that found among dog and cat owners that there was a significant reduction in headaches, difficulty sleeping, indigestion, and sinus trouble after following first time pet owners for 10 months.

The “Microbiota Hypothesis” suggests that dust from homes with dogs may influence the human immune response by changing the gut microbiome in ways that reduce the risk for allergies and asthma. Young children that grow up with dogs in the households are less likely to develop allergies, eczema or asthma.

(Did You Know? A Swedish study of over 1000 7- and 8-year-olds found that those without pets, 49% developed allergies. The rate dropped to 43% for kids with one pet and 23% for those with three pets.)

Both the Michigan School of Public Health and a study at Florida A & M found that dogs motivated those with chronic pain to get up and get moving which alleviated some of the pain. Pets also distracted their pain and improved their moods. Increasing their activity gave them a sense of hope and increased functionality.

Research also suggests that a dog is associated with lower blood pressure, cholesterol levels and type 2 diabetes by reducing stress. Dog ownership is associated with a 31% decreased risk of death from cardiovascular disease.

Adopted!

Meet Bellarina!
This little cutie is a survivor!
She was found in a small carrier on the front porch of an abandoned house. She had likely had been there over a week.
Thankfully, this tough cookie hung in there until someone found her.
She is doing well here and appreciated the two warm baths she so badly needed from one of our amazing volunteers.
We are still getting to know this spunky little girl but she is friendly happy and confident. She seems to like other friendly dogs and we will cat test soon.
She will be spayed, is vaccinated, heartworm tested, dewormed and on flea and heartworm preventatives.
Bellarina is approx. 1 yr old and weighs 8.4 lbs.
Her 2024 Ohio license is also included in her adoption fee.
Applications can be found at bchsohio.org

Huge thank you to Jeff Wyler Automotive Family for their donation to Pets for Patients! To celebrate their 50 years of business, they are committing to donating a total of $50,000 over the next year with 50 donations of $1,000 each to local rescues and shelters! We’re honored to be one of their recipients (and of course, we loved the chance to get to spend time with Bumblebee 🐶).

Our costs to make a match between a shelter animal and a patient average $1,000 each with vetting, training, grooming, supplies, heartworm and flea/tick prevention, and more, all provided for FREE to our families. Jeff Wyler Automotive Family’s gift lets us save another dog in need and make a family going through their hardest time a little happier this holiday season ❤️

Here are some Frequently Asked Questions about what we do.

We hope you consider donating to Pets for Patients on Giving Tuesday. Our website has a donate button. www.petsforpatients.org

How do patients/families get a rescued pet through Pets for Patients?

Since 2016 Pets for Patients has had a collaborative relationship with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC). Our organization first receives a referral from medical staff at CCHMC who have determined that a patient would benefit from having a pet. After the referral is received, Pets for Patients meets with the patient/family, determines their needs, and works to place a shelter pet with them.

What do Pets for Patients provide to the patient/family when they receive a pet?

Pets for Patients provides: adoption fee, spay/neuter, vaccinations, heart-worm/flea/tick prevention for 6 months, teeth cleaning, proper crate, and bed, safe collar and leash, food/water bowls, safe toys and chews, vet recommended food, basic obedience training for both dog and family, we help the family find a veterinarian in their neighborhood, and we provide ongoing support after the pet has been placed in their home.

Do you provide any therapy or service pets?

No. We only provide pets and family dogs/cats only. We do not offer therapy or service animals.

Do you provide any pet certifications?

No. We only provide pets and family dogs/cats only. We do not provide certifications such ESA, obedience, or comfort certifications.

What type of shelter pets do you provide?

We only work with shelter dogs and cats. We do not offer exotic or farm animals.

Are the pets placed with patients/families going to their forever home?

Yes, this is a forever placement. We make sure that patients/families understand the long-term commitment that comes with having a pet. This is covered by families in the intake process.

We strive to find the best home for the shelter pet. It can take up to three months for a dog to transition from shelter life to new home life. We provide in-person and our cell phone numbers so the family can contact us if they have questions. We are 100% available to guide the family through this transition period.

When a child’s life has been impacted by a serious or chronic illness, having a pet as a companion can improve the mental health and sense of well-being for the patient and their family as everyone struggles to create a new normal.

Love, hope & healing

Pets bring warmth, happiness and love into every home they touch. They bring a sense of hope and healing to the individual and families that love them. And when that individual is a child facing a serious illness or a family trying to create a new normal, that bond becomes extraordinary.

There is no bond like the one between a rescue animal and a family. It’s a lasting bond that begins at that first spark – that moment they realize they each have something the other needs. This powerful, forever bond offers precisely what they need – the chance to create new memories together, and when it is needed most, live a legacy of love and support.
